Introduction: 3G - what it is?

The IMT-2000, literally means International Mobile Telecommunications is also known as 3G or else as 3rd Generation, it is a family of mobile telecommunication standards which is defined by the International Telecommunication Union which is inclusive of services like GSM [Global System for Mobile Communications], EDGE [Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution], UMTS [Universal Mobile Telecommunication System], CDMA2000 [Code Division Multiple Access] and also DECT [Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology] and WiMax [Wireless Digital Communications System] where the features like voice telephone, video calls and also wireless data all these combined in the mobile environment. Comparatively 3G have more functionality than 2G and 2.5G services, 3G allows speech and data services simultaneously and also it allows data rates at higher speeds say up to 14.0 Mbit per second with the downlink and around 5.8 Mbits per second when under uplink with HSPA+. 3G network operators can offer its users with a wide range of advanced services with a higher network capacity through its spectral efficiency in an improved rate. 3G have more bandwidth, provision for expansion or growth and it supports more diversified applications, for instance the current GSM can give not only data voice but also circuit switched data at an amazing download rate up to 14.4 kbps, but for further greater efficiencies 3G has to switch over to packet switched data for better spectral efficiency and higher bandwidth speed. 3G which is considered as the next generation of mobile communication systems, can enhance the services like multimedia, high speed mobile broadband, easy internet access and one can view the video footage also in their handsets. With these enhanced facilities one can make video calls easily, can watch live TV, can also access high speed internet, can receive emails and can also download music tracks. One can even download videos

of entertainment easily at an faster rate, live streaming, news and current affairs, contents of sports and also video messaging. 3G Services in India Features 3G offers some information with certain advanced applications which were not available earlier in their handsets, few of the applications available now are: y One can watch Mobile TV where the service provider redirects several TV channels directly to users phone and it can be viewed without any hassles. y Service providers can send requested videos to subscribers on demand. y Video conferencing facility on request from the subscribers. y An advanced feature like Tele-medicine where an isolated subscriber will get advice online from remote medical providers. y A service provider can facilitate the subscriber an additional feature like weather and traffic conditions of an certain place over phone y this facility helps the subscribers to know more about friends and business places y GPS services can also be used in handsets that support it. How to switch to 3G. y You have to firstly go for such handsets which support 3G in the 3G circle. y Its speed will depend on the handset, coverage area, network traffic and number of users using it. y No, SIM change is required; it can work on your present SIM, for activation of this service call to your respective company's service center. y Where there is no coverage of 3G network, in this situation you will go to use 2G/2.5G network coverage. For this you have to do setting in your mobile, you have to set your mobile in dual mode, and also you required to have GPRS setting.

y There is difference between 2G and 3G, 3G provides high speed internet and data services. You can make video calls on it and you can use many multimedia services on it. y With 3G you can download videos on your handsets, and watch it. You can send recorded videos and can easily upload to the social networking sites. y In markets companies already launched handsets which are less than Rs 10,000 and support 3G.

Literature Review: Consumers Satisfaction Analysis by TRAI: was one of the main source of gathering information about the performance of the telecommunication sector of India. As the performance of these companies will indicate some trend that we can guess for the upcoming 3G services Some key points revealed from the survey: y The number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 621.28 million in Mar-10 to 671.69 million at the end of Jun-10, registering a sequential growth of 8.1% over the previous quarter as against 10.52% during the QE Mar-10. This reflects year-on-year (Y-O-Y) growth of 44.5% over the same quarter of last year. The overall Teledensity in India has reached 56.83 as on 30th June 2010 Trend in Telephone subscribers and Teledensity in India

y Subscription in Urban Areas grew from 420.47 million in Mar-10 to 452.59 million at the end of June-10, taking the urban Teledensity from 119.73 to 128.20. Rural subscription increased from 200.81 million to 219.09 million, and the Rural Teledensity increased from 24.29 to 26.43. y About 63% of the total net additions have been in urban areas as compared to 56% in the previous quarter. Rural subscription recorded a decline in rate of growth during the quarter, from 15.06% in Mar-10 to 9.11% in Jun-10. Rate of growth for urban subscription also declined from 8.47% in QE Mar-10 to 7.64% in QE Jun10. The share of rural subscribers has increased slightly to 32.6% in total subscription from 32.3% in Mar-10.

This is of major importance because initially when the 3G services will be launched by all the private players their major target would be rural populations. As the charges will be high because of the high auction rates and also the handset which are required for enjoying 3G services is most likely to be available with the urban subscribers. Also the huge subscriber base show that if telecom companies are able to tap the market they are in for a treat. Wireless Subscribers Total Wireless Subscribers 635.51 million
