Introduction

What is My Chemical Romance?

My Chemical Romance is an American alternative rock band from New Jersey, formed in 2001. The band consists of lead vocalist Gerard Way, guitarists Ray Toro and Frank Lero, and bassist Mikey Way. Shortly after forming, the band signed to Eyeball Records and released their debut album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love in 2002. They signed with Reprise Records the next year and released their major label debut Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge in 2004; the album was a commercial success, and was awarded platinum status a little over a year later. The band eclipsed their previous success with their 2006 concept album, The Black Parade, which gained generally favorable reviews among music critics. Their fourth studio album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, was released on November 22, 2010, to positive reviews.

Early Career of MCR

The band was formed by front-man Gerard Way and drummer Matt Pelissier approximately one week after the September 11 attacks. Witnessing the planes crash into the World Trade Center influenced Way's life to the extent that he decided to start a band. Way wrote the song "Skylines and Turnstiles" to express his feelings about September 11 and shortly thereafter, Ray Toro was recruited because at the time Way couldn't sing and play the guitar at the same time. The name of the band was suggested by bass guitarist Mikey Way, younger brother of Gerard, who was working in a Barnes & Noble when he was struck by the title of a book by Irvine Welsh named Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance. The first recording sessions were undertaken in Pelissier's attic, where the songs "Our Lady of Sorrows" (formerly called "Bring More Knives") and "Cubicles" were recorded. The band refers to those sessions as The Attic Demos. After hearing the demo and dropping out of college, Mikey Way decided to join the band. While with Eyeball Records, the band met Frank Iero, the lead vocalist and guitarist for Pencey Prep. Following Pencey Prep's split in 2002, Iero became a member of My Chemical Romance, just days prior to the recording of the band's debut album.] They recorded their debut album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, just three months after the formation of the band and released it in 2002 through Eyeball Records. The album was produced by Thursday frontman Geoff Rickley after the band became friends with him while playing shows in New Jersey. Lero played guitar on two of the tracks, one of which was "Early Sunsets over Monroeville." During this time, the band was booked at the infamous venue, Big Daddy's, where they began to receive more attention.

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge (2nd album)

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge is the second studio album by American rock band My Chemical Romance, released on June 8, 2004. This was the band's first album to be released through Reprise Records. The previous album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, was released through Eyeball Records. The album, as of October 2010, has sold 1,699,000 copies in the US. Four successful singles were released from this album: "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", "Thank You for the Venom", "Helena" and "The Ghost of You". After the release of Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, My Chemical Romance received an extremely positive response from mainstream communities, as shown by the popularity of their music videos on MTV, etc. However, they received some negative responses from the underground music communities. Factors that may have contributed to this shift in fan base are hypothesized to include: the band replacing Matt Pelissier with Bob Bryar on percussion for live shows succeeding their Summer Sonic performances; the band signing to a new label, Reprise Records; a change in image and style; and the fact that they had gained a measure of mainstream popularity. Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge has sold over 1 million copies to date in the U.S. and has been certified platinum by the RIAA. It has also been certified Double Platinum in Canada, Platinum in the UK and Gold in Ireland, Chile and Argentina. In addition, a vinyl version of the album was released December 16, 2008. Unlike their previous album, this does contain the Parental Advisory label.

The Black Parade (3rd album)

The Black Parade is the third studio album by American rock band My Chemical Romance. Released on October 23, 2006 through Reprise Records, it was produced by Rob Cavallo, who has also produced albums for Green Day. The album is the first on which Bob Bryar plays drums . It is a rock opera centering on a dying character with cancer known as "The Patient". The album tells the story of his apparent death, experiences in the afterlife, and subsequent reflection on his life. Four singles were released from the album: "Welcome to the Black Parade", "Famous Last Words", "I Don't Love You", and "Teenagers" .[3] The Black Parade has received generally favorable reviews, and the band achieved its first Number 1 single in the UK with Welcome to the Black Parade. The album debuted at number two on both the Billboard 200 and the UK Albums Chart and is also certified as platinum by the RIAA,[4] as well as a Platinum certification in the UK and a Gold certification in Argentina by the CAPIF and in Chile by the IFPI Chile. The limited edition boxed set also earned My Chemical Romance a Grammy nomination. In the video game Guitar Hero II (Xbox 360 version), the song "Dead!" was added to the game's track list prior to the earlier PS2 version, and the three songs "Teenagers," "Famous Last Words" and "This is How I Disappear" are available for download. The Black Parade has sold 1,610,000 copies in the US as of October 2010.

Danger days: True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoy (4th album)

Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys is the fourth studio album by American alternative rock band My Chemical Romance. The album was produced by Rob Cavallo and was released by Warner Music and Reprise Records on 19 November 2010. The album was released in the USA by Reprise Records on 22 November 2010. The album is based around the lives of the "Fabulous Killjoys", in the setting of a post-apocalyptic California in the year 2019. Promotional websites for the album reference the alleged 2012 doomsday prediction as a possible cause of the fictional catastrophe. The band's alteregos are the four Killjoys: "Party Poison" (Gerard Way), "Jet Star" (Ray Toro), "Fun Ghoul" (Frank Lero), and "Kobra Kid" (Mikey Way), shown in the videos for "Na Na Na" and "Sing". The Killjoys are a group of outlaws who are fighting against the evil corporation Better Living Industries (BL/ind.) and its various "Draculiods" and exterminators, such as Korse (Grant Morrison). The character aliases were originally the names of their "designer" guns. Their guide is the pirate radio DJ named Dr. Death Defying who is voiced by Steve Montano (also known by the stage name "Steve Righ" when performing with Mindless Self Indulgence). The two music videos show a girl simply known as Missile Kid. (played by young upcoming actress and singer/songwriter Grace Jeanette Clarke) and Dr. Death Defying's sidekick 'Show Pony' (played by a performer known as Ricky Rebel). '"Na Na Na" shows the Killjoys' daily lives until Korse defeats them and captures the girl, and "Sing" shows Killjoy's rescue mission to get her back; however, this mission sees the gang wiped out in the process, though the girl is taken in by Dr. Death Defying and their other allies.

A website for Better Living Industries was launched in November 2010, featuring a mission statement, a report from the Zones and a merchandise store. Gerard Way has said the inspiration for the song was a Trans-Am car he had seen years ago and the visual idea of it driving fast through a desert: this car is the one used in the music videos. Way has also stated "there is no story" in the album itself, with Dr. Death Defying's interludes "painting a picture of this world" and he feels the songs are quite "direct". The final track, "Vampire Money", was a reaction to the band being asked to do a song for the Twilight franchise. Gerard Way said that the reason the song was on the album was because "theres a lot of people chasing that fucking money. Twilight? A lot of people around us were like, please, for the love of God, do this fucking movie. But wed moved on.

Musical Style and Influences

My Chemical Romance's general style has been categorized as "alternative rock", "post-hardcore", "punk revival", "pop punk and, most controversially, "emo". The band's official website describes their music as simply "rock" or "violent, dangerous pop". Gerard Way has publicly rejected the term "emo", describing the genre as "fucking garbage". However, Way has reportedly also described the band's style as "What-else-ya-got-emo". Way said to Rolling Stone, "we love bands like Queen, where it's huge and majestic, but also bands like Black Flag and the Misfits, who would go absolutely crazy." Way has stated that the band is heavily influenced by Queen, Misfits, Black Flag, Iron Maiden, The Cure, Joy Division, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Smiths/Morrisey. Way has also said that his band patterns their career after that of The Smashing Pumpkins, another band they admire.

"Emo" label

Singer-songwriter Gerard Way has previously stated that he strongly disagrees with the band's frequent classification of "emo", saying: "Basically, it's never been accurate to describe us. Emo bands were being booked while we were touring with Christian metal bands because no one would book us on tours. I think emo is Fing garbage, it's bulls. I think there's bands that unfortunately we get lumped in with that are considered emo and by default that starts to make us emo."
