0 Purpose To establish a key set of principles to ensure that: (a) all employees are appointed and promoted according to merit and without discrimination; and (b) all employees receive fair and equitable treatment without discrimination. 2.0 Objective The Burnie City Council aims to become an employer of choice and as such, commits itself to meeting the requirements of Duty of Care to its employees and implementing HR Policies and Practices that enhance our ability to attract and retain high quality employees. 3.0 Scope This policy covers all employment arrangements for council. To achieve this objective, the HR Policies and Practices will be based on but not limited to, the principles and policy areas detailed below. council refers to the body corporate throughout the policy and its effects. 4.0 Policy 4.1 Principles 4.1.1 Safe and Equitable Work Place Ensuring that employees and contractors are able to participate in the workplace in an environment without risk to their physical and psychological health and well being as far as practicable. 4.1.2 Challenging and Rewarding Employment Positions within council will be structured to provide meaningful and challenging opportunities (where possible and practicable) aimed at maximising employee contribution and to encourage ongoing

professional development. A high level of performance is expected and will be rewarded on an individual basis through the industrial tools, remuneration strategy and recognition programs. The organisations Performance Planning and Review program will ensure that employees and managers are aware of and committed to the performance expectations of each position. 4.1.3 Good Faith, Direct and Timely Management of Employees The council undertakes to communicate changes within its operations and to receive advice and feedback from employees. Consultation and communication systems, such as staff forums and team meetings will be used to ensure that employees are kept up to date and can participate in discussion on issues affecting the operations. The organisation will act with good faith and be transparent in all its dealings with employees and will seek out ways of involving staff to gain their support and understanding as far as practicable. 4.1.4 Management of Employees with Fairness, Dignity and Respect Human Resources procedures and management practices will aim to ensure that employees are treated fairly, with dignity and respect.
