com) Last update: 4/7/1999 UPDATES FROM THE LAST MONTH: ============================ * Added information on upcoming Beast Machines toys * Updated assorted Autobot/Decepticon vehicle models

INTRODUCTION ============ Welcome to the Transformers Toy List! This is an attempt to create a descriptive database of all Transformers toys ever released. For those who don't know or don't remember, the Transformers were/are a series of action figures from Takara and Hasbro, which consist of robots that transformed into vehicles, weapons, and other accessories (or vice versa, if you prefer). The idea of this list is to provide a thumbnail sketch of the toys available. This means names, subgroups, colors, and any other interesting notes or data worth noting. It's geared largely for toy collectors and shoppers, but you may find other uses for it as well. This list was originally compiled by Colin Betts and included most of the "first generation" Transformers toys (American releases, 1984-1990). It has since been reformatted, expanded, and built on by Robert A. Jung to include Japanese and European Transformers, as well as the "second generation" toys (American releases, 1993 and beyond), and fixing holes in the original list. This list is posted to the Usenet groups rec.toys.transformers.moderated and alt.toys.transformers around the start of each month. The latest version of this list can be found on my web page, at http://www.digiserve.com/eescape/. If you have corrections, updates, or suggestions on how to improve this list, let me know! I can be reached at rjung@netcom.com, and all mail is welcome!

PARALLEL DEVELOPMENT ==================== In the beginning, the Japanese and European Transformers toy lines closely mirrored the American ones. But in the late '80s, as the toys' popularity was declining in America, the European and Japanese product lines continued to thrive. Not wanting to give up a good thing when they saw it, Hasbro and Takara continued to release Transformers toys in their respective markets. To make things even more complicated, the different markets started to feature different colors, different names, and different toys all together. Oy vey! To help toy hunters looking for overseas markets, each year's listing includes sub-sections for the European and Japanese toy lines. Unless otherwise noted in the text, you can assume that all toys listed in the American release were also shipped in the same year to Europe and Japan with no major differences.

(An Australian version of this list -- covering an overlap of toys that were released in that country -- can be found on the world-wide web at http://members.tripod.com/~Dirge/aussietf.txt)

FORMAT ====== This toy list is divided several ways: * First is the division by year, starting from 1984. All toys that were first released in that year are listed. * Next is the division by faction. Autobots first, then Decepticons. No bias here, it's just alphabetical order. * Next is the division by nation. American releases are listed first, then European, then Japanese. If the differences between the overseas markets and the American ones were minor, then only the differences will be noted. * Finally, the individual toys are listed. Due to the wide diversity of Transformers that exist (the gimmicks got pretty elaborate, especially around 1990), it's impossible to set up a rigid format that works for everything. Instead, all entries will be listed ROUGHLY in the following format: Name - Sub-Group - Transformation/Description (Additional notes, descriptions, and/or cross-references.) Quick examples: Hoist Inferno Green Tow-Truck Red Fire Engine

Jetfire White Jet (Based on the Valkyrie VF-1S jet from the Japanese Robotech animated series.) Sludge - Dinobot Grimlock - Dinobot Commander Silver/grey apatosaurus Silver/grey tyrannosaurus

Anyway, you get the idea. It's not that hard to read (I hope). The abbreviation "tec" is used for "high-tech/futuristic," as in Apeface - Horrorcon Black ape/tec jet

AMERICAN-CENTRIC? ================= Yes, this list is written from an "American-centric" point of view, where the American Transformers toys are seen as the "root," and the Japanese and European versions are "offshoots." Let me also state that I know this is not the best view to take of the situation. The majority of the toy designs came from Japan to begin with (most from Takara's Microman and Diaclone product lines), and during the later years (1990-1993), the American market died while the Japanese and European ones continued on. So, why is this list "American-centric"? Two main reasons: (1) Toy robots -- transforming or not -- have been popular in Japan for a long time, but only a rare few have the long-time popularity that the

Transformers do (most Japanese robot toy lines are lucky to last two years). The common Transformers product was American, as Hasbro unified numerous Japanese toy lines into one continuity. It's not a stretch to say that, if it wasn't for Hasbro, there wouldn't BE any Transformers to talk about at all. (2) The mythology of the "Transformers" -- the entire Autobot/Decepticon conflict, the history of Cybertron, the unifying background and complex characters -- is an American creation. Part of the idea of warring robots came from Japan, but the fine details were from Hasbro and Marvel Comics (such as the cars and airplanes distinction in the early days, or the idea of a common race of Transformers). So again, apologies if I bent any metal noses out Politically Correct. I'm certainly not trying to of the European and Japanese toys. But since the myth and as a marketing product -- is an American pay it tribute by taking that perspective. of joint for not being 100% downplay the significance "Transformers" -- both as creation, I've decided to

Therefore, even though Hydra (Japan) and Darkwing (America) are essentally the same toy, Hydra will be listed as "Japanese version of Darkwing," instead of listing Darkwing as "American version of Hydra"). Also, where the European or Japanese names aren't known or not given, the American name is given in quotation marks (example: "Slapdash"). If you can fill in these blanks, please drop me a line! Besides, it's not THAT big of a deal, is it? Nah. B-)

Enough blather already; on with the list! And remember, in the world of the Transformers, there's ALWAYS more than meets the eye... ============================================================================= 1984 - Transformers Year 1 (The Transformers arrive on Earth. To help blend in with the natives, they get Earthbound transformations. The sensation begins...) ::AUTOBOTS::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Optimus Prime (Autobot leader) Red Freightliner COE Dual-Axle Tractor Truck with Grey trailer

(Unconfirmed rumors of blue Bluestreaks continue to haunt the fan community. The Bluestreak prototype used by Hasbro was colored blue, but none of the blue toys have even been found in a sealed box. Adding to the confusion is the existence of blue Diaclone "Bluestreak" toys, which some people have mistaken for authentic Transformers-released Bluestreak toys. At the time of this writing, the evidence supporting authentic blue Bluestreak toys is all but nonexistent, and should be considered a myth.) Jetfire White jet (Based on the Super Valkyrie VF-1S jet from the Japanese Macross animated series.) Brawn - Mini Bot Green Land Rover Defender 4 x 4 Bumblebee - Mini Bot Yellow Volkswagen Beetle "Bumper" - Mini Bot Yellow Mazda Familia 1500XG Cliffjumper - Mini Bot Red Toyota (or Porsche 924 Turbo) Gears - Mini Bot Blue 4WD off-road truck Huffer - Mini Bot Orange tractor cab Windcharger - Mini Bot Red Trans Am (Red "Bumblebee"s and Yellow "Cliffjumper"s exist, due to leftover stock from Takara's Microman line. They are mispackaged [example: a red Bumblebee sold as Cliffjumper], and are considered rare. There is also a yellow Mini Bot that does not look like either Bumblebee or Cliffjumper, but was sold as Cliffjumper. This toy is unofficially called "Bumblejumper" or "Bumper" by collectors.) "4WD Type" - Mini Spy Blue/White/Yellow Jeep "Buggy Type" - Mini Spy Blue/White/Yellow Dune Buggy "FX-1 Type" - Mini Spy Blue/White/Yellow Mazda FX-1 "Porsche Type" - Mini Spy Blue/White/Yellow Porsche (The Mini Spies were free premiums packaged with the Mini Bots, and were the first toys to carry the Autobot/Decepticon "rub symbols." There were four mini spy designs; each one was either blue, white, or yellow, and could be either an Autobot or a Decepticon, making for a total of 24 variants. The toys were originally from Japan's "Mecha Warriors" toy line; their names are listed above.) "Sky Dasher" - Powerdasher Silver/Black/Red jet "F-1 Dasher" - Powerdasher Silver/Blue/Red rocket car "Drill Dasher" - Powerdasher Silver/Black/Yellow drill (Powerdashers were available only from the S.T.A.R.S. program. When you sent in robot points for a Powerdasher, you got one of the three different forms, at random. No individual names for the Powerdashers were given; the names given above are Takara's pre-Transformers Diaclone toy names.) Camshaft - Omnibot Grey Mazda Savannah RX-7 Downshift - Omnibot White Toyota Celica XX Overdrive - Omnibot Red Ferrari BB (Omnibots were available only from the S.T.A.R.S. program.) --EUROPEAN AUTOBOTS-Ironhide, Prowl, Sunstreaker, Trailbreaker, Wheeljack, Powerdasher, and the Omnibots were not available in Europe at this time. A green version of Trailbreaker was reportedly sold in some parts of Europe, though it's likely that the toy is actually Hoist (see 1985 entry) in a Trailbreaker box. --JAPANESE AUTOBOTS (Cybertrons)--

Because the Transformers toy line was not introduced in Japan until 1985, there were no toys released this year.

Topspin - Jumpstarter Blue/White rocket sled Twin Twist - Jumpstarter Blue/White drill tank (Jumpstarters have pull-back motors that move the vehicle mode. The vehicle then "jumps" and automatically transforms into the robot mode. There is an error in each toy's tech-spec cards, as Topspin and Twin Twist's pictures were swapped in a printing mistake. As best as can be determined, however, Topspin is the toy with the white torso, and Twin Twist is the toy with the two drills in front.) Beachcomber - Mini Bot Cosmos - Mini Bot Powerglide - Mini Bot Seaspray - Mini Bot Warpath - Mini Bot Blue dune buggy Green UFO Red A-10 Thunderbolt II airplane Blue/White/Yellow hovercraft Red Sheridan tank

--EUROPEAN AUTOBOTS-Blaster and Swoop were not available in Europe at this time. Ironhide, Prowl, Sunstreaker, Trailbreaker, and Wheeljack (see 1984 entries) were released. --JAPANESE AUTOBOTS (Cybertrons)-All of the American Autobots from 1984 and 1985 were released, with the following exceptions: Ironhide, Ratchet, Sunstreaker, Gears, Beachcomber, Cosmos, Powerglide, Seaspray, Warpath, Powerdasher, Jetfire, Omega Supreme, Roadbuster, Whirl, Topspin, and Twin Twist. I suspect the reason for some of the omissions is because they were not made by Takara... Also of interest is that the Japanese Perceptor shoots missiles out of its viewer.

Soundwave was packaged with Rumble, and included a pretend microphone, headphone, and cords. The Japanese cassettes were sold separately and came with plastic carrying cases. Megatron (Destron leader) Flat Grey Walther P-38 (The Japanese Megatron shot plastic pellets and came with a sword. It did not include the stock, silencer, and scope of the American version.) Astrotrain - Triple Changer White/Black shuttle/train (Only the first release of the Japanese Astrotrain was white. Later releases were purple/black, like the American one.) ============================================================================= 1986 - Transformers Year 3 (TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE was released in August 1986. Two years in the making, it featured the voices of Orson Welles [in his final movie role], Leonard Nimoy, Robert Stack, Eric Idle, and Judd Nelson, along with some very beautiful animation. For various reasons, the movie was not released in Japan until 1988; instead, "Scramble City" is released, a half-hour cartoon to bridge the pre- and post-movie cartoon episodes. 1987 - Transformers Year 4 (The movie is over, but the toys continue. Subgroups prove to be a big hit as Hasbro present Headmasters and Targetmasters.
