This years list of Academy Award nominees for Best Picture includes movies based on a baseball general manager, a race horse, silent lm actors and Americans visiting Paris. Each of the 10 nominated movies featured living, breathing actors. Animated motion pictures were shut out once again. No matter what ick wins the Academy Awards most prestigious category, an animated motion picture will not win. In the 84 years of the Academy Awards, no animated motion picture ever has taken home Best Picture honors. Disneys Beauty and the Beast in 1991, Pixars Up in 2010 and Pixars Toy Story 3 in 2011 were the only three animated movies to receive a Best Picture nomination. To qualify for Best Picture, a lm must have a running time of at least 40 minutes and open in a theater in Los Angeles County in California. Despite dozens of animated motion pictures being eligible, the nominations have not come. Instead, Rango, Puss in Boots, Kung Fu Panda 2 and foreign icks A Cat in Paris and Chico & Rita will compete for Best Animated Feature. McDaniel College graduate Chris Molloy, who interned at Walt Disney World in Orlando two years ago, said hes not sure why Disney classics and other animated lms get overlooked. Its possible voters overlook animated movies because they are geared to a younger audience, he said. The thing is, though, a lm can appeal to all and still be a great lm, he said.

From left, Jessie, voiced by Joan Cusack, Buzz Lightyear, voiced by Tim Allen, and Woody, voiced by Tom Hanks, are shown in a scene from Toy Story 3.
MSN.com movies critic Dave McCoy tabbed Pixars WallE as his favorite lm three years ago. It was not nominated for Best Picture, having to settle for the Best Animated Picture honor instead. Beauty and the Beast got nominated 20 years ago. Silence of the Lambs won. Even so, Beauty and the Beast was adapted for theater, like so many Disney classics. In order to be performed in live theater, for me, the story has to be great, Molloy said. Beauty and the Beast is still being performed more than two decades after the movie release. Liberty High Schools drama club will perform Beauty and the Beast at 7 p.m. April 19-21, 26-28 and at 2 p.m. April 28. Beauty and the Beast is

my all-time [Disney] favorite, Liberty High School drama instructor Tony Cimino said. My mother loved it when I was growing up, so, naturally, wed spend time together watching it. Disney classics, no Oscars Molloy, McCoy and Cimino picked their favorite animated movies of recent years. Heres how they fared at the Oscars:
Fantasia Year: 1940 The tale: Mickey Mouse appears in

The Sorcerers Apprentice, in one of the tales as Disney animators set pictures to classical music. None
Number of Oscar nominations: Wins: None Best Picture in 1940: Rebecca Beauty and the Beast
