Guidelines
Goals to be achieved In the tourism industry English is a daily requirement in order to communicate. In the Pre- Intermediate level the students have some knowledge and know how to ask and answer simple language as well as respond and understand simple discourse. In this level their knowledge of the language improves so does their fluency and accuracy. Other goals are: 1. To enable the students to understand and respond to information in their fields in the medium of English. 2. To enable the students to engage in studies in their field at foreign universities and to participate in conferences, including the presentation of papers, in the English medium. 3. To enable the students to feel competent in different speech settings 4. To enable the students to read, write and speak fluently in English.

Objectives By the end of the course the students will be able to make improvements in the four skills as follows: The level offers the students a good guidance of the essential skills to work in tourism. Speaking should be one of the essential skills to be developed; they are provided with a wide range of communicative practice form simple conversations to preparing a mini presentation. Listening should be the other skill on focus. They will be provided with materials of guide lines, receptionists, travel agents; they would also be provided with an opportunity to distinguish native from non native speakers of English.

During the course the reading and writing are combined based on tasks such as conforming changes to reservations, job application, describing places, letters of application etc.

These guidelines are based on the following assumptions: A communicative approach will be used in which the focus of language practice is on the process communication rather than on the mechanical analysis of grammar structures. Students will be given the widest possible opportunities to use English for selfexpression; they will learn it by using it rather than analyzing it. Every lesson will include open-ended communication practices in which students are encouraged to express their own ideas and opinions, share and analyze information, solve problem and complete tasks in English. As the syllabus is task-based the following instructions are taken into consideration: - The student is on the prominent place. - Meet expectations and needs of students. - Provide for language comprehensions before production is required. - Communicative activity/a variety of activities. - Develop interaction among students through providing pair and group work. - Present the language through content in realistic and authentic context. - Emphasize studying about the language and its mechanics. - Use a variety of materials. - Use the textbooks. - Present literature as a translations exercise. - Assessment of students overall abilities to the use of language for communication.

EXPECTATIONS FROM STUDENTS AT THIS LEVEL Students: Can express themselves in speaking and writing when the topic is familiar to them. Present arguments and rational to support their point of view. Be coherent and in writing as a unique skill that must be learned and practiced on their level . New topics may reveal the need for specific terminology. Students at this level are capable of reading original English texts. Students at this level are capable to plan, organize, develop, and deliver presentation by following clear step by step guidelines.

Content of the book :


1. Unit 1- All in a days work Adverbs of frequency ; Simple Present Tense; Hotel jobs, Daily routines, Nationalities Practice : Exchange personal details, Complete a register 2. Unit 2- Fly- Drive Holidays Present Continuous; Car hire Practice: Taking a booking, deal with a phone enquiry, Hire a car, plan a holiday 3.Unit 3- Table for two Countalble and uncountable nouns; some and any;much, many, a lot of; types of food, recording vocabulary, describing food, complaining about food Practice: Deal with a complain, describe a traditional dish 4. Unit 4- City tours Past Simple Tense; Question words, Giving directions; Practice: Give a guided Tour, describe a building. 5. Unit 5- Water cities Comparatives and Superlatives; Hotel facilities, describing hotels, dealing with new words. Practice : Write an e- mail describing a hotel 6. Consolidation Grammar review Practice : Translate a letter, write a latter of apology, deal with a complain 7. Unit 6- Cruise ships Present Perfect Tense; Criuses, Cabin facilities; Practice: Write a CV, write a covering letter, apply for a job, interview for a job. 8. Unit 7- Service and safety Modal verbs (Request and offers); health and safety, on safari Practice: check in a guest, give health and safety advice, write a letter of apology 9. Unit 8- East meets West Predictions and intentions; change words. Practice: Exchange holiday plans, describe traditional gifts, create a tourism development plan, give a presentation 10. Unit 9- Window seat or aisle? Modal verbs (obligation); Air travel, check-in; Practice: produce an information leaflet, sell on-board duty-free goods 11. Unit 10- Business or pleasure?

Unit 13- Land of smiles Relative Pronouns; Ecotourism, word- building, medical equipment, UK/US English; Practice: Give health advice, write a health information leaflet 15. Unit 14- Enjoy your stay Conditional 1; Currencies, checking out/ in Practice : Explain a bill, upsell at reception 16. Unit 15- Winds of change Present and past forms, future forms; the weather forecast; Practice: Describe the weather, give a presentation, prepare a tourism development plan 17. Consolidation 3 Grammar review, Practice: translate a web page, holiday rep game.
