INTRODUCTION
10

The youth of today is focused with modernization and it has brought a lot of negative consequences in their lives. Teens know what it is, they want it and they really dont know enough about it. It is SEX. Sex is not a silent topic now-a-days for teens. They find it something cool. With all confusing thoughts and with all the surroundings sex, and with all the adolescent hormones virtually ensuring that teenagers are obsessed with it, they need a safe out let to explore those thoughts and feelings without being judged. Todays young Indians are increasingly indulging in sexual activities. There is so much of exposure, thanks to the media, peer and westernization, which is not in accordance with our value system. The teens need a place to ask questions and get adequate answers, and unfortunately, many parents are not prepared to provide that atmosphere because of which they tend to end up with wrong things.

Providing basic information provides the foundation on which more complex knowledge is built up over time.
Sex education, the issue is one of the extreme importances for the whole of society as there are a number of critical factors that need to be taken into account. Sex education, which is sometimes called sexuality education or sex and relationships education, is the process of acquiring information and forming attitudes and beliefs about sex, sexual identity, relationships and intimacy. Sex education is also about developing young people's skills so that they make informed choices about their behavior, and feel confident and competent about acting on these choices. It is widely accepted that young people have a right to sex education. This is because it is a means by which they are helped to protect themselves against abuse, exploitation, unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and HIV and AIDS. It is also argued that providing sex education helps to meet young peoples rights to information about matters that
11

affect them, their right to have their needs met and to help them enjoy their sexuality and the relationships that they form. Providing effective sex education can seem daunting because it means tackling potentially sensitive issues and involving a variety of people parents, schools, community groups and health service providers. However, because sex education comprises many individual activities, which take place across a wide range of settings and periods of time, there are lots of opportunities to contribute. The nature of a person's contribution depends on their relationship, role and expertise in relation to young people. For example, parents are best placed in relation to young people to provide continuity of individual support and education starting from early in their lives. School-based education programmes are particularly good at providing information and opportunities for skills development and attitude clarification in more formal ways, through lessons within a curriculum. Community-based projects provide opportunities for young people to access advice and information in less formal ways. Sexual health and other health and welfare services can provide access to specific information, support and advice. Sex education through the mass media, often supported by local, regional or national Government and non-governmental agencies and departments, can help to raise public awareness of sex health issues.

"Because sex education can take place across a wide range of settings, there are lots of opportunities to contribute."
Effective sex education also provides young people with an opportunity to explore the reasons why people have sex, and to think about how it involves emotions, respect for one self and other people and their feelings, decisions and bodies. Young people should have the chance to explore gender differences and how ethnicity and sexuality can influence people's feelings and options. They should be able to decide for themselves what the positive qualities of relationships
12

are. It is important that they understand how bullying, stereotyping, abuse and exploitation can negatively influence relationships. The circumstances and context available to parents and other sex educators are different from place to place. Practical or political realities in a particular country may limit people's ability to provide young people with comprehensive sex education combining all the elements in the best way possible. But the basic principles outlined here apply everywhere. By making our own contribution and valuing that made by others, and by being guided by these principles, we can provide more sex education that works and improve the support we offer to young people. All people, particularly those in their teens need to understand the potential consequences and pitfalls of being physically intimates with another person. They need to have an appreciation of and respect for the perspectives of others, such as those whose sexuality is different from their own. They need to be exposed to the issues and their responsibilities. Although its getting better, society still considers talking about sex taboo for young people. Everyone tries to scare teenagers with stories about AIDS and pregnancy, but no one explains to them the hormonal mechanisms that will cause them to experience entirely new feelings. In conclusion, the reason teens, and everyone else, is emotionally unprepared to talk about sex is that society considers it wrong to emotionally prepare people to talk about sex!

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

A STUDY OF THE OPINION OF PARENTS AND TEACHERS ON INCLUDING SEX EDUCATION IN SECONDARY SCHOOL.

14

METHODOLOGY

The methodology adapted by the researcher to study of study the opinion of parents and teachers on including sex education in the secondary school syllabus is through survey method. Survey researcher is one of the most important areas of measurement in applied social research. The broad area of survey research compasses any measurement procedures that involve asking questions of respondents. A survey can be anything from a short paper and pencil feedback form to an intensive one - on one in depth interview.

15

NEED OF THE STUDY

Education and society go hand in hand and education aims at developing responsible citizens for the society. Therefore, it should aim at all round development of the child (not only intellectual but also emotional, social, physical & psychological). For the overall development of a child, knowledge of reproduction and its related topics in human beings is also essential. This knowledge should be introduced when they reach puberty. The study is requires as to find out whether parents are comfortable discussing sex, and prefer to hope that their children are figuring it out from other sources such as television, movies, their friends and school. This is a dangerous hit and miss method that leaves kids in the dark, and causes them to make in some cases disastrous mistakes.

1.

The study is needed to inculcate values of self worth among its students so that they have a high regard of themselves and so they can have self confidence and say no to sexual predators and to those who lure them.

2.

The study is needed so that students have a sense of moral values to know the values of life itself.

3. The study is needed so that students have education which include not only knowing the anatomy of body parts but how to take care and protect themselves and their issues regarding personal hygiene. 4. The study is needed to let the students know the importance of this sensitive topic and the consequences of physically abusing themselves.

16

5.

The study is needed to include opportunities for young people to develop skills, as it can be hard for them to act on the basis of only having information. The study is need so that it can serve as a guide for the youth and they can gather their act together. The study is needed so that sex does not remain a controversial topic any more. The study is needed so that Kids are not bombarded daily by the media with sexual topics and images. The study is needed to alert the parents to care about their children at the adolescence age, especially if they haven't taken the time to sit their kids down and explain consequences.

6.

7. 8.

9.

10.

The study is required so that it helps our kids make informed decisions regarding sex rather than we leave it up to the media, parents who either aren't comfortable or just simply refuse to discuss the topic, or our kids' friends.

The needs of this study is essential to know how much talking about sex is important for teachers and parents to theirs students and children.

17

OBJECTIVES

Sex education aims to reduce the risks of potentially negative outcomes from sexual behaviour. It also aims to contribute to young peoples positive experience of their sexuality by enhancing the quality of their relationships and their ability to make informed decisions over their lifetime. Sex education that works, by which we mean that it is effective is sex education that contributes to both these aims thus helping young people to be safe and enjoy their sexuality.

From the above findings it can be suggested that

Sex education should be included in the secondary school syllabus. Students should be given sex education from STD. 8th - 9th. It is also suggested that only basic knowledge about sex should be included in the syllabus which can satisfy the students curiosity at that age. Parents and teachers should be free to speak to their children and students about topics related to sex. Students and should give enough space to discuss about topics related to sex so that they dont have to seek help of friend to discuss on it. Experts should be called to schools to deliver sex education at least once in the school.

It is also suggested that teachers and parents should also be trained to impart sex education to children and students.

Sex education should be given specially in school.

The content in the topic of sex should be framed in such a manner that students and teachers should be comfortable to discuss about it.

CONCLUSION
From the above research it can be concluded that

Students need space from their teachers and parents so that they can discuss their problems related to sex freely. Maximum parents want sex education to be given to children only at school and by their teachers. Teachers want sex education to be given by the expert team. about sex to children.

Both teachers and parents should be given training to impart knowledge

Maximum students are free to talk to their friends about topics related to sex. Parents and teachers feel that students should be given only partial and basic information about sex.

Teachers and parents should be free to talk about sex to their students and children.
