Lent Gets Back to Basics Lent Gets Back to Basics

Returning to the Lord means moving away from many things that distract us. But how to do it? Here are three ideas Catholics have been practicing for centuries. This type of simplicity is nothing new. centuries. This type of simplicity is nothing new. Prayer It may seem obvious, but getting ashes on Ash Wednesday, going to Mass at least on Sunday, celebrating the sacraments of penance sometimes during Lent and participating in parish producing Lent and participating in parish programs really focus on our faith. Taking time for family prayer, even just before diner, makes a difference. Then theres personal prayer. Might it be possible to put this prayer into your busy day, say at stoplight, before work, at bedtime or at waking? Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy o me, a sinner (Its based on the prayer of the sinner in Luke 18:13). You can repeat this prayer as you inhale and exhale a few times, or for a minute, ive minutes, even longer! Fasting Those of us without age or health restrictions give up meat on Fridays (abstinence), and we fast on Ash Wednesday and Goody Friday. Thats a minimum. We can eat less meat through all of Lent as a way to focus on the hunger of the world. Abstinence is always a way for us to turn our hearts toward God. Almsgiving Christiansindeed all people of goodwill - perChristians form acts of charity. Can you contribute to your parishs food bank? Volunteer to help your local St. Vincent de Paul, Knights of Columbus, soup kitchen or any other outreach to the poor or to the elderly? Getting in touch with the physical poverty of others help us remember to simplify our own act.

February 26, 2012 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By the First Sunday of Lent, many people have given up on giving up. Yet experiencing hunger for favorite things is a sign of a desire to face our deepest hungers. We do not embrace fasting as individuals, but rather as the communitys way of life in this season. Sometimes it helps to see Sunday as an oasis in the Lenten desert, a place where fasting is not as strictly observed. If we count the days of the Lenten calendar, starting backward from the end of Lent on Holy Thursday, it is difficult to measure the forty days. Many are surprised to learn that the Sundays are counted as part of Lent, but are not counted in tallying the forty days of the Lenten fast. For that, we count the fast backward into last week, beginning on Ash Wednesday. So, until today we have been in the Lenten fast, days that function as a kind of overture to a symphony of conversion. Today Lent solemnly begins, marked in many places by the sending of catechumens and candidates to the bishop for the call to the Easter sacraments. Tomorrow with them, we embrace the Lenten fast again. Today we are exactly forty days from the opening of the Paschal Triduum on Holy Thursday.

The tongue is one of the most exercised muscles in the human body. Someone once calculated that the average persons daily speech would fill 500 pages of a book. It is the strongest muscle in the body and is essential to eating, swallowing and speaking. The tongue is often mentioned in the Scriptures. As we read in Proverbs 21:23, Those who guard their mouth and tongue guard themselves from trouble. Psalm 19 ends with this simple poetry: Let the words of my mouth be acceptable, the thoughts of my heart before you, Lord. Ancient Israel appreciated the rich interrelation among the five senses: sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste. Thus, the Letter of James rightfully preaches about the dangers of the unbridled tongue as a metaphor for all sorts of sin and discord. (Adopted from Franciscan Media)
