DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL & AEROSPACE ENGINEERING AEE301B Design of Aircraft Components Project 2011 Professor in charge: Dr H.

. Benabdallah This project is to be conducted in a team work environment with 4 teams competing against each other. The results of the project should be communicated in the form of a technical report focusing on the conceptual/preliminary design calculations and aircraft sizing aspects, summarized during an oral presentation. The report is due Wednesday 13 April 2011 at the same time as the oral presentation of 25 min, which includes 5 min of question time, during our usual periods (3 and 4 1000 to 1150). A jury composed of professors and engineers specialists in aero will assess the presentations. The outcome of the presentation competition will be used in the deliberation process to determine the winner of the Lucas Price. The presentation will be assessed according to the following scheme: Weight Understanding of the concept of Initial sizing Adequacy of used theory, technical substance , depth and precision of the information Originality and credibility of the proposed concept Quality of the presentation The teams are: Team 1 Design 1 Byun Demel Marchessault Rathbone Reid Theriau Team2 Design 2 OCdt Berndt OCdt Campos OCdt Dolamore OCdt Gimpel OCdt Noris OCdt Pantuso Team3 Design 3 OCdt Dey OCdt Gordon OCdt Hotson OCdt Jensen OCdt Mellow OCdt Miller Team 4 Design 4 OCdt Gander OCdt Kisielius OCdt O'Rourke OCdt Pratt OCdt Saroop OCdt Trowbridge 10% 70% 12% 8% Mark /5 /5 /5 /5

3) Initial sizing Determine o Weight of the airplane first iteration o Critical performance parameters Drag polar, (CL)max , (L/D)max, WTO/S, T/WTO or WTO/P o Constraint diagram Design point o V-n diagram o Flight envelope (Speed-Altitude limits) o Propulsion system sizing and specifications o Graph the available and required thrust/power @ SL as function of the speed

4) Aircraft geometry and configuration Layout Wing geometry and placement o Determine shape, aspect ratio, sweep, airfoil type Fuselage configuration and overall dimensions Tail o Configuration, aspect ratio, sweep, airfoil type Fuel tanks sizing o Determine size, number and placement Landing gear o Choose adequate landing gears, determine their placement Draw at scale, using graphics software, the resulting three-view layout depicting all overall dimensions and a section of the fuselage 5) Weights Wing, fuselage, empennage, nacelles, power plant, landing gear, fixed equipment (estimate) o Estimate the weight of each of the major components of the aircraft CG o Determine the CG location of the aircraft. At the same time, determine the longitudinal positioning of the wing and stabilizers. Consider that the weight of the fixed equipments has been symmetrically distributed along the whole length of the fuselage o Generate the CG excursion diagram and express the FWD and AFT cg locations as % of MAC
