Position Information Full-time, permanent (probationary) position. Salary Range and Max Salary The application deadline is: March 11, 2012 The salary range for this classification is: $3102 - $4388 The maximum salary budgeted for this position by the department is $3102 Campus Marketing Statement California State University, Dominguez Hills, was established in 1960 and is one of the 23 campuses that comprise The California State University system. CSU Dominguez Hills is an urban, comprehensive public university that serves a culturally rich, diverse student body of over 12,500 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Located on a 346-acre site in the South Bay portion of the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, CSU Dominguez Hills has a highly pluralistic student body, which includes a significant number of non-traditional, working adult students as well as approximately 2,000 students enrolled in distance learning programs statewide. The University, with its five Academic Colleges, has more than 300 full-time faculty members and is situated in an area characterized by an extraordinary heterogeneity of people, and an extensive array of high technology industries and professional services. Department Marketing Statement The University Advisement Center (UAC) provides primary advising for undergraduate students with undeclared majors, 'Special Admits', and new freshmen who have not yet developed advising links with an academic advising department. The UAC provides general consultation and referral services for all students who have special needs or problems. The UAC provides special advising services for students on academic probation, E.O. 665 as regards to EPT.EML placement, Academic Skills Assessment Program (ASAP), and monitors student participation in the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR). Major Duties Under the general supervision of the Director, the individual in this position will provide information about University policies, procedures and regulations; assist in the implementation and personal delivery of various academic advising programs, workshops, and computer-based advising systems; and provide comprehensive academic advising to undergraduate students regarding general education and information for graduation requirements in accordance with university guidelines. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting the Director with special projects or assignments; must have working knowledge of departmental major requirements; assist in planning, organizing, implementing and managing all aspects of Freshman Mandatory Advising including program and facilities scheduling, student correspondence, and print and multimedia presentation materials; provide departmental training for advisors as requested; periodically serve as Center Liaison/Representative at community and campus events, conferences, outreach opportunities, etc.; possess familiarity with various university programs which are used to enhance student growth and development; and establish dependable and trusted relationships with faculty, staff, and students within CSUDH.

Qualifications Knowledge of: -Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior; -Knowledge of research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information; -Working knowledge of the techniques and methods of interviewing; -Knowledge of organizations and personnel issues. Abilities to: -Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of professional staff, faculty, CSU administrators, and students to carry out complex assignments without detailed instructions; -Use advanced statistics and research methods to collect, record, and interpret statistical data as it relates to the UAC, advising methods, and the student population; -Carry out day-to-day assignments without immediate direction; -Independently plan work, take action, and assist students in solving problems; -Participate in and contribute to group meetings; -Design, establish, and sustain new programs or initiatives; -Use judgment within the area of their expertise to creatively utilize existing procedures and to recommend solutions to problems for which precedents may not exist; -Present clear and concise information orally and in written reports. Skill in: -Using a personal computer to develop and maintain files; -Utilizing PeopleSoft information systems to evaluate student success and/or roadblocks; -Analyzing and addressing complex academic needs of students; -Utilizing computer-based and interview information to accurately advise students; -Working with a culturally diverse student population, and awareness of the needs of under-represented, non-traditional, and other student groups. Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent critical thinking skills, communication and interpersonal skills. Experience training others. Minimum Qualifications Education: Required: Equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Preferred: Master's degree in one of the behavioral or social sciences. Experience: Required: Equivalent of one year of professional experience in an Academic Advising Center. Actual classroom presentation experience with fairly large groups of young adults. Equivalent amounts of graduate level, job-related education may be substituted for the required experience. Preferred: Experience writing power point presentations and planning, coordinating, and conducting group advising sessions for 20 or more students. Responsibilities 50% Advise undergraduate students about General Education (GE), GWAR, unit, academic, and major course requirements. Explain the rationale of general education, help students interpret the requirements of general education, and point out the significance of alternate choices under each GE category that will best serve their needs. Demonstrate, during each advising session, how the Degree Progress Report and Catalog can be used to meet the academic needs of students. 15% Deliver power point presentations, videos, and other academic advising computer based information systems to the various populations/programs in the University.

5% Prepare power point presentations, videos, and other academic advising computer based information systems to the various populations/programs in the University. 5% Evaluate GE course substitution petitions. 5% Document information given to advisees on intake records. 5% Serve as a resource person for the rules and regulations of the University which includes the academic appeals process to facilitate graduation. 5% Establish cooperative and working relationships with university services, programs, and offices, and serve as a referral source. 5% Assist the staff or director with special projects or assignments. 5% Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or administrators.
