24, 2012 Robert Arias, Assistant Superintendent of the Human Resources Division Rowland Unified School District 1830 Nogales St. Rowland Heights, 91748 Dear Assistant Superintendent of the Human Resources Division: In light of recent news related to teacher misconduct at Miramonte School in Los Angeles, we are reviewing the manner in which local school districts handle complaints of inappropriate behavior by teachers. This letter is to request access to records in the possession of [insert agency] for purpose of inspection and copying, pursuant to the California Public Records Act, Government Code Section 6250 et seq. The records I am seeking are: Access to and copies of the districts policy on teacher conduct The districts policies for reporting and investigating claims of misconduct The number of complaints received related to teacher misconduct at each school site, relevant dates and status of any investigation into those complaints dating back to the 2006-07 school year Copies of any forms sent to the state requesting revocation of teacher credentials due to misconduct dating back to the 2006-07 school year. I believe there exist no provisions of law exempting the records from disclosure. Pursuant to Government Code Section 6257, I ask that you make the records promptly available to me for inspection. If you believe a portion of the information I have requested is exempt from disclosure by express provisions of the law, Government Code Section 6257 additionally requires segregation and deletion of that material in order that the remainder of the information may be released. Government Code Section 6256 also requires the citation of specific provisions of the law which exempt the documents in question and that the newspaper be notified of the reasons for the determination not later than 10 days from your receipt of this request. Also, please note that Section 6253.1 of Californias Government Code requires public agencies to assist the public in developing focused and effective requests that reasonably describe identifiable records as follows: (1) Assist the member of the public to identify records and information that are responsive to the request or to the purpose of the request, if stated. (2) Describe the information technology and physical location in which the records exist.

(3) Provide suggestions for overcoming any practical basis for denying access to the records or information sought. Finally, if you plan to charge me for any expense incurred in complying with this request, please notify

me in advance. Thank you for your timely attention to my request. Sincerely, Juliette Funes Staff Writer 626-962-8811, Ext. 2446 San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group 1210 N.
