THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
ORDINARY FORM
THE HOLY FAMILY
EXTRAORDINARY FORM
he Feast of the
Epiphany is the
continuation
of the mystery of
Christmas; but it
appears on the
Calendar of the
Church with its own
special character. Its
very name, which
signifies Manifestation,
implies that it
celebrates the
apparition of God to
his creatures.
For several centuries,
the Nativity of our
Lord was kept on this
day; and when, in the
year 376, the decree of
the Holy See obliged
all Churches to keep
the Nativity on the
25th December, as
Rome did - the Sixth
of January was not
robbed of all its
ancient glory. It was
still to be called the
Epiphany, and the
Baptism of our Lord
Jesus Christ was also
commemorated on
this same Feast, which
Tradition had marked
as the day on which
that Baptism took
place.

T
Nations shall walk by your light, and
kings by your shining radiance. Raise
your eyes and look about; they all gather
and come to you: the wealth of nations
shall be brought to you. Your sons come
from afar, bearing gold and
frankincense, and proclaiming the
praises of the Lord.

THE HI GHEST FORM OF CHRI STI AN PRAYER I S THE MASS.
Having a mass offered for loved ones, living or deceased, or for a special intention
can be done by filling out the White Mass Intention envelopes, which can be found
in the vestibules of the Church, and dropping them in the collection basket. The
requested donation is $10 per Mass. We cannot promise a specific date will be
available, so booking a few weeks, or even months, ahead of time is a good idea.

INTROIT
Proverbs 23:-24-25
he father of the Just rejoiceth greatly,
let Thy father and Thy mother be
joyful, and let her rejoice who bore
Thee.
(Ps.88. 2, 3). How lovely are Thy tabernacles,
O Lord of Hosts! my soul longeth and
fainteth for the courts of the Lord.

COLLECT
Lord Jesus Christ, who, being
subject to Mary and Joseph, didst
sanctify home life with unspeakable
virtues: grant, that, by the aid of both, we
may be taught by the example of Thy Holy
Family, and attain to eternal fellowship with
it:

EPISTLE
Colossians 3: 12-17
rethren, Put ye on therefore, as the
elect of God, holy and beloved, the
bowels of
mercy, benignity,
humility, modesty,
patience: bearing
with one another and
forgiving one
another: even as the
Lord hath forgiven
you, so do you also.
But above all these
things have charity,
which is the bond of
perfection: and let
the peace of Christ
rejoice in your hearts,
wherein also you are
called in one body:
and be ye thankful.
Let the word of
Christ dwell in you
abundantly, in all
wisdom, teaching and
admonishing one
another in psalms, hymns and spiritual
canticles, singing in grace in your hearts to
God. All whatsoever you do in word or in
work, do all in the Name of the Lord Jesus
Christ, giving thanks to God and the Father
by Jesus Christ our Lord.
GRADUAL
Psalms 26: 4
ne thing I have asked of the Lord,
this will I seek after: that I may dwell
in the house of the Lord all the days
of my life. V. (Ps. 88. 5). Blessed are they that
dwell in Thy house, O Lord, they shall praise
Thee for ever and ever.
Alleluia, alleluia. V. (Isaias 45: 15). Verily
Thou art a hidden King, the God of Israel,
the Savior. Alleluia.

GOSPEL
Luke 2: 42-52
hen Jesus was twelve years old, they
going up into Jerusalem according to
the custom of the feast, and having
fulfilled the days, when they returned, the
Child Jesus remained in Jerusalem, and His
parents knew it not. And thinking that He
was in the company, they came a day's
journey, and sought Him among their
kinsfolk and acquaintences. And not finding
Him, they returned into Jerusalem, seeking
Him. And it came to
pass that after three
days they found Him
in the Temple, sitting
in the midst of the
doctors, hearing them
and asking them
questions. And all
that heard Him were
astonished at His
wisdom and His
answers. And seeing
Him they wondered.
And His Mother said
to Him: Son, why
hast Thou done so to
us? Behold Thy father
and I have sought
Thee sorrowing. And
He said to them: how
is it that you sought
Me Did you not
know that I must be
about My Father's business? And they
understood not the word that He spoke unto
them. And he went down with them and
come to Nazareth, and was subject to them.
And His Mother kept all these words in her
heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom and
age and grace with God and men.
OFFERTORY
Luke 2:22
he parents of Jesus carried Him to
Jerusalem, to present Him
to the Lord.

SECRET
e offer unto Thee, O Lord, this
propitiatory Sacrifice, humbly
entreating Thee: that the
intercession of the Virgin Mother of God,
with blessed Joseph, Thou wouldst firmly
establish our families in Thy peace and grace.

PREFACE
Preface of the Epiphany
t is truly meet and just, right and for our
salvation, that we should at all times, and
in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O
holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God;
for when Thine only-begotten Son was
manifested in the substance of our mortal
flesh, with the new light of His own
Immortality He restored us. And therefore
with Angels and Archangels, with Throne
and Dominations, and with all the hosts of
the heavenly army, we sing the hymn of Thy
glory, evermore saying:

COMMUNION
Luke 2:51
esus went down with them and came to
Nazareth, and was
subject to them.

POST COMMUNION
ake us, O Lord Jesus, whom Thou
dost refresh with heavenly
sacraments, ever to follow the
example of Thy Holy Family: that in the
hour of our death, the glorious Virgin Thy
Mother with blessed Joseph may come to our
aid, and we may be found worthy to be
received by Thee into everlasting tabernacles.

Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.
The kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts;
the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute.
All kings shall pay him homage,
all nations shall serve him.
Psalm 72
continued from front page
he Greek Church gives this Feast the venerable and mysterious name of
Theophania, which is of such frequent recurrence in the early Fathers, as
signifying a divine Apparition. We find this name applied to this Feast by
Eusebius, St. Gregory Nazianzum, and St. Isidore of Pelusium. In the liturgical books of
the Melchite Church the Feast goes under no other name.
The Orientals call this solemnity also the holy on account of its being the day on which
Baptism was administered, (for, as we have just mentioned, our Lord was baptized on
this same day.) Baptism is called by the holy Fathers Illumination, and they who
received it Illuminated.
Lastly, this Feast is called, in many countries, Kings Feast: it is, of course, an allusion to
the Magi, whose journey to Bethlehem is so continually mentioned in to-days Office.
The Epiphany shares with the Feasts of Christmas, Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost,
the honour of being called, in the Canon of the Mass, a Day most holy. It is also one of
the cardinal Feasts, that is, one of those on which the arrangement of the Christian
Year is based; for, as
we have Sundays
after Easter, and
Sundays after
Pentecost, so also we
count six Sundays
after the Epiphany.
The Epiphany is
indeed great Feast,
and the joy caused
us by the Birth of
our Jesus must be
renewed on it, for, as
though it were a
second Christmas
Day, it shows us
our Incarnate God
in a new light. It
leaves us all the
sweetness of the
dear Babe of
Bethlehem, who
hath appeared to
us already in love;
but to this it adds
its own grand
manifestation of
the divinity of our
Jesus. At
Christmas, it was a
few Shepherds that
were invited by the
Angels to go and
recognize THE
WORD MADE
FLESH; but now, at the Epiphany, the voice of God himself calls the whole world to
adore this Jesus, and hear him.

Membership Drive
If you like our church, then make a New
Years resolution and join with us in the
unique mission of St. Stephen of Hungary
Parish.
Because of the HIPAA regulations, the area
hospitals and nursing homes do not
automatically inform us that parishioners
have been admitted to their care. Please
call the parish office and let us know when
a member of your family has been admitted
to any health care facility. Please identify
them as parishioners of St. Stephen of
Hungary Parish (There is St. Stephen
Episcopal Church in Whitehall; so one
must be clear).
