    ArcGIS Desktop is a product. ArcEngine is a product. ArcServer is a prod uct.

    ArcObjects are the components that make up the products. You can't compare ArcEngine and ArcObjects because they are not the same thing. If you write a Des ktop application using ArcObjects, the user must have the Desktop product and th e Desktop license. If you write an ArcEngine application, the user must have the ArcEngine product and the ArcEngine license. In the case of the Desktop applica tion, the user must have ArcGIS (because that's the product) and the proper lice nse needed to run your application (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcINFO). In the case of the ArcEngine application, the user must have the ArcEngine runtime (that's the user-side product) and an ArcEngine license (an ArcGIS license may be substitut ed).
