Sunni Singh Coke Analysis ResearchProject Phase I

The data for this analysis was collected in class, Prof. Jean had supplied us with the required material for this analysis, which consisted of three different types of coke brands from multiple containers (to help preserve quality control, in case there was possibly just one bad batch): Diet Coke, Coke Zero, and Diet Pepsi. He also supplied us with a digital scale capable of measuring to the accuracy of .01 grams. Each individual can from the three brands were numbered which varied by brand, but each of the brands ranged at least from 1 to 68, 15 numbers were selected at random from each brand and weighed. Our group which consisted of me, and two others, hypothesized that coke zero would weigh the most, due to that they would possibly have to use more articial ingredients in order to help preserve the avor and keep the calories zero. After agreeing on a hypothesis we proceeded to generate 15 numbers at random for each of the 3 different types of cokes. I stayed at the table and weighed the cans, while my other two group members went and brought me the required coke cans from our randomly generated list.

Diet Pepsi: After collecting all our data, the results we got for the Diet Pepsi:

From this table we can infer the total weight of the fteen samples (sum) we used for the Diet Pepsi weighed 5539.45 Grams, if we divide the total weight by 15 (number of cans we weighted) we can get the average weight (mean) of each can which is 369.30 Grams. The sample deviation is 2.07 Grams. This just means that the average difference between the answers is about 2.07 Grams, this is a way of checking how closely we were able to keep reproducing the same results, the larger the sample deviation, the more room for variation in our results. The lowest weight (minimum) we recorded for Diet pepsi was 365.67 Grams. The rst quartile which is the same as the 25th percentile ( 25% of the data below and 75% above) is 367.7 Grams. The median or the center data which is the same as the 50th percentile (50% of the data below and 50% above) is 370.17 Grams. The third quartile or 75th percentile (75% of the data below and 25% above) is 371.06 Grams. The largest value (maximum) we received out of the 15 data samples we took for Diet Pepsi was 371.84 Grams. Based off of the box and whisker plot, we can also make the assumption, that the data could be slightly skewed left.

Diet Coke: The results we got for Diet Coke:

From this table we can infer the sum for the Diet Coke weighed 5587.35. The mean for this sample is 372.49 Grams. The sample deviation we recorded is 1.89 Grams. The Minimum for Diet Coke was 369.35 Grams. The rst quartile we got 371.1 Grams. The median is 372.34 Grams. The third quartile is 374.25 Grams. The maximum we recorded for Diet Coke was 375.38 Grams.

Clearly based on the above statistics we know that Diet Coke weighs more than Diet Pepsi, also because the standard deviation is smaller, we can infer that Coke might have slightly better consistency in the amount of product you receive when purchasing a can.

Coke Zero: The results we got for Coke Zero:

The sum for Coke Zero weighed 5576.09 Grams, and the mean is 371.74 Grams. The sample deviation is 1.94 Grams. This just means that the average difference between the answers is about 1.94 Grams. The Minimum weight we recorded for Coke Zero was 369.33 Grams. The rst quartile which is 369.95 Grams. The median is 371.62 Grams. The third quartile is 373.54 Grams. The maximum we received out of the 15 data samples we took for Coke Zero was 375.28 Grams. Based on the box and whisker plot for Coke Zero, it looks like the data could be skewed right.

Comparison: Here is all the statistics side by side, so it could be easily compared.

Conclusion: Our original hypothesis of Coke Zero was wrong, Diet Coke ended up having the heaviest weighing can, the heaviest weighing can out of the least weighing cans from the three types, and the heaviest Mean as well as Median. Therefore I believe its safe to assume that Diet Coke weighs the most out of the three.

My second hypothesis of Coke possibly having better quality control in aspect to the consistency of the amount of product you receive over Pepsi still seems valid. The standard deviation of Coke Zero and Diet Coke is less than the standard deviation of Diet Pepsi, I need to get more pepsi products, and run these tests on more of Pepsi and Coke products, so I could at least better test my secondary hypothesis.
