PAMAN Green Island

Croatia was built on Mount okovac. The building, rich in historical and spiritual heritage, derives from the 12th century and is dedicated to Saint Cosmus and Damian. A Byzantine and Christian fort stood once on Mount okovac. The monastery was damaged in the 14th century, and the Benedictines rebuilt it in the Gothic style.

Neighboring islands sometimes have a similar destiny. Just like people who have been living together for a long time, they start resembling one another and thus islands, when physically connected, as is the case with the islands of Ugljan and Paman, start resembling one another. This symbolism has a practical value, especially for those whose traveling aim is to get to know the islands as well as they can, directly, from up close. Geographical Cross-section View of the Island Its surface of 63 km2 and its 65 km well-indented coastline, places Paman among the bigger Croatian islands. A bridge across the narrow drelac Strait connects Paman with the island of Ugljan, and the Paman Channel, in some places 2 km wide, divides it from the mainland. Watching that green island from northeast, you will notice the extended peaks of the Paman high grounds that follow one another along the entire length of the island. Thanks to its configuration the island is adequate for walking and cycling. The intended coastline decorated with coves attracts tourists who find peace and rest in the numerous hidden beaches. Thanks to the sea currents from the north this green island turns to turquoise green every six hours, at the changing of sea current direction. The channel is well known for shellfish that the inhabitants search for in a special way. They pull along the sea bottom a specially made net while others collect these delicacies by breathhold diving into the clear depths around the island. Island Microclimate The Mediterranean climate has developed a rich world of flora and fauna, many types of medical and aromatic herbs, and the sea bottom conserves many types of Mediterranean Sea shellfish and fish. The clean sea offers gravel and rocky beaches. Island History Paman was already inhabited in the prehistoric era. Today some signs of this period can be noticed. The earliest island tribute dates from the early Middle Ages. The remains of Roman architecture such as stone engravings and metal coin findings are proof of their presence on the island. The name Paman (Postimana) was first recorded in the year 990. The Byzantine emperor and travel writer Constantine Porfirogenet wrote down in his work De administrando imperio the Medieval name of the island in the Greek language, which was Katan, after which it is considered that the island locality of Tkon received its name. The names Lissa and Kantun are also mentioned. The Roman writer Plinius the Elder mentions Paman in the year 79 by the name of Lissa. After the fall of the Venetian Republic Paman, as well as all of Dalmatia, fell under French rule, and then Austrian. This remained so until the fall of the monarchy, and from 1918 it has continually been part of Croatia. Island Interior Sometimes an island comes to be loved through songs, sometimes through stories, sometimes through read books. Paman can be loved only in one way, and it is through mutual companionship with the island. To set off into the discovery of Paman as a modern tourist means to divide life with its inhabitants. If you do not have the time to participate in their daily activities, through the gastronomical and island specialties, you will get to know the creations made by their own diligent hands. Paman will greet you with spread arms and make you a present of the blessings from the happy islands that live without noise and in harmony with nature. A Tour of the Island The partly steep and inaccessible southwestern coast of the island is overgrown with Mediterranean macchia. The peaks Mali Bokolj (174 m) with its steeple, Veli Bokolj (272 m) and Zaglav (127 m) are very noticeable. Localities with protected ports are found on the northeastern coast, in the Paman Channel. Besides the island transversal that extends for about 30 km from Tkon to the bridge crossing for the island of Ugljan, there are various marked trails intended for walking/trekking and cycling along macadam roads, field trails, and partly on asphalted roads where there is very little traffic after the main summer season. A traveler here meets long abandoned villages or villages that
Dobropoljana

are inhabited off and on, as needed, reminding of the completely different past island life. It is a delight to climb the island peaks with lovely views of the neighboring islands. The island flora and fauna has a Mediterranean character with a mild climate that makes activities possible throughout most of the year.

Itinerary no. 1 If you reach Paman from northwest, across the bridge that connects Ugljan and Paman, the first place where you can stop at is drelac. The locality is known as an excursion center for many Zadar inhabitants. It is known for Neviane its attractive beaches and the strait that is used by navigators on their way to the Kornati and the islands of the Zadar archipelago. Mali drelac is right next to drelac, an old island locality with a church. Two kilometers to the south you will come by Banj, a tame island locality of diligent olive growers, fishermen and wine growers. It is drelac recommended to visit the old church of St. Cosmus dating from 1356. Banj is known for its water sources. Two-three kilometers to the south, and the road leads to Dobropoljana, a locality in a cove that carries the same name, and after following a few kilometers further you come to Neviane, known for its lovely beach and good Banj gastronomic offer. The older part of the locality is at 300 m from the sea. Continuing further south we pass by picturesque island places such as Mrljane and Barotul. Barotul is known for its Noahs ark hunters, shellfish that are the gastronomic specialty of the island. All these places emit peace and beauty, and have beaches in pinewoods, ideal for those looking for peace and rest. The road leads you to the neighboring locality of Paman, the island center that has since ancient times been a dwelling of fishermen and farmers. Continuing on your way, you will come by Kraj, a locality on the southeastern banks of the Paman Channel located at about 300 meters from the sea. Kraj is known for its Gothic Franciscan monastery with a church from 1392. Somewhat further south you will find Ugrini, a small fishermens place at two kilometers from the ferry landing in Tkon. Tkon has a ferry landing and the ferry line is a connection with Biograd na Moru, a town on the opposite side of the channel. Tkon has nice beaches, and the one on the southeastern part, next to the autocamp, must be emphasized. okovac monastery, the only active male Benedictine monastery in Croatia possesses a rich sacred art collection that must be seen. Itinerary no. 2. The same trip as under number 1 can be repeated if you come to Paman by ferryboat from Biograd na Moru and cross the bridge to continue on your visit of the island of Ugljan. This is a way to experience two particularly attractive islands of the Zadar archipelago. The daily program that remains as an alternative is a visit of the island across trekking and cycling trails to reach the hidden beaches of the island, or afternoon walks along olive groves and island fields, where, from some island high ground, you can watch the fascinating sunset well known in this region We can say, in the end, that Paman is an island that will not leave you indifferent and you will repay it by visiting it once more.

Observing Paman from the air we get the impression of a tame green island that resembles a sprawled dog resting light-heartedly in the blueness of the sea. The northeastern shores of the island facing the mainland are inhabited and traditionally oriented towards a coexistence with the coast. The remaining part of the island was once dedicated to land cultivation and olive growing. The southern part is mainly uninhabited, left to the delights of Robinson tourism. You will notice at once that the island is made for walking or cycling. The trail system used by the islanders for reaching their fields or olive groves is used even today. Modern rebels in search for the unknown have revived the old roads overgrown with weeds and macchia, and have changed them into tourist trails that reach the most hidden beaches. The combination of these trails can satisfy even the most demanding visitors.
