Eagle Creek is a loud, enegertic band that can do it all. All five of their members play and sing providing one memoriable and upbeat night. Their talent is like no other. I was able to sit down and get to know what Eagle Creek is all about. A5: Eagle Creek is an interesting name. There must be some story behind it. Where/How did it originate? It took a long time to come up with our name. We got together one day thinking that it would only take a few minutes to come up with a name and a few days later, we were still thinking about it. We had come up with quite a few names but none really worked for us. We were all in high school at the time and our mascot was an eagle. So one of the guys said why not something with the word eagle in it. We thought for just a little bit and finally someone said, What about Eagle Creek? Thats how we got our name. It just sounded right and everyone we told really liked it and said it fit us well.

MUSIC NONE OTHER THAN EAGLE CREEK

By Aly Gruchaly, Contributing Writer

A5: Who are the band members, where are they from, and what do they play? This past year we just added two new members to our group. Our original drummer had to call it quits after 10 years. Our lead singer is Gavin Nordby who plays the acoustic guitar and makes his home in Grygla, MN. Our lead guitar player and vocalist is Geoffrey Larson and he also lives in Grygla. The final member of the original four is Tony Nordby (Gavins younger brother), who plays the bass guitar and sings vocals, makes his home in Thief River Falls, MN. One of the two new members to join in 2011 comes from Gatzke, MN and his name is Randy Larson. He plays the lead guitar, mandolin, violin and also sings vocals in the group. Our other new member of the group, who makes his home in Thief River Falls, MN, is Andrew Daly. He plays the drums and sings vocals. A5: Tell us a little about Eagle Creek's roots. Where/How did you get started? Its kind of a long story, but well make it as short as possible. When we first started, Gavin was really the only one who knew how to play guitar. Geoffrey was learning how to play and Tony hadnt even picked up a guitar. But one day, the high school band teacher asked if Tony would join the high school pep band. So he did, but he still didnt know what to play. The teacher asked if hed be interested in playing the bass guitar. Tony said yes to the request and thats how he got started. One day, us three thought it would be fun to kind of play a little bit together to see if we could make noise. As that day progressed, something actually started to sound like a song. We started playing at school during study hall and the kids said we should try to play one song on the last day of school for the whole entire school. We didnt even have a drummer, so we went and asked the drummer of the pep band to see if he wanted to try and play with us. He agreed to it and thats when we started to practice. Do you know how many times? Once. Just once, and it was the night before we were supposed to play for the entire school. We practiced three songs, the first being Should Have Been A Cowboy from Toby Keith, second was The Dance from Garth Brooks, and third was Right Where I Need To Be from Gary Allan. We were so nervous. When we started our first song, Gavin looked over at Geoff and his hand was shaking so bad that we didnt think we were going to be able to play the song. But we did, and we made it through it. We still can hardly watch the video from that day though. It was that bad. We still talk about that day. To see how far weve come over the years, its just amazing. CONTINUED ON PAGE 5

A DOWN DINING TAKEJewett,WALK Writer THE MEDITERRANEAN: By Brandi Contributing

Tucked into the side of the Canad Inn on 42nd Street is the Mediterranean eatery I Bistro. Though it shares a wall with a hotel and waterpark, youd never know it sitting in the dining area. The appearance and atmosphere leaves visitors with the impression that the restaurant is occupies its own building. You cant ear the screams of swimming children, only the soft instrumental music that fills the restaurant.

FRUIT SALSA WITH CINNAMON CHIPS

Opening July 16, 2007, the establishment isnt as old as some dining choices in the Grand Forks area, but it still gives them a run for their money with its menu choices. During a recent visit, I opted for a more traditional Italian dish, the restaurants signature I Bistro Lasagna Bolognese ($13). Its a simple lasagna variation, featuring the usual suspects: lasagna noodles layered with a meat sauce and cheeses. My friend selected the Chicken Souvlaki Dinner ($17). Seasoned with oregano and lemon, the chicken is served on skewers with a salad and warm pita wedges. Pizza, sandwiches, salads, soup and steak are just a few of the menus other offerings. Dishes come in individual sizes or the larger bistro size. I liked this option, as Im one who usually doesnt finish the meal and ends up taking it home. There the to-go box claims a space in my fridge until I rediscover it again days later. Our food came out less than fifteen minutes after ordering. The lasagna was assembled and baked in its own dish instead of being cut out of a pan that had sat around all night. The meal arrived with another perka breadstick called an I Bistro Bite. After sampling a few bites, I was satisfied with my decision. The lasagna was excellent, arriving piping hot with tender noodles and a thick layer of mozzarella cheese on top. The sauce used in the dish featured manageable chunks of meat and was not watery. CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

Trash littered the roads, children ran around in torn up shirts. Stands along the road looked suspiciously likely to have banana beer. Buildings were made of wood and plastered mud. We were in a place the locals said you must not stand too long or the socks off your feet would be stolen. And its true; I didnt see many people wearing socks. Yet in this place, somewhere we reduce to poverty and hunger, my education began.

As I looked around the room, unfamiliar substances filled bottles of an old china cabinet. Colored powders, crushed and pulverized solids, ground up spices - they all took up residence in aged canning jars covered in a thick layer of grime and filth. Drums hung from a far wall worn drums played many a times in fast rhythms to dispel demons that have taken up residence in peoples bodies. The rhythm of the drum beat faster and faster, could be irresistible to the demon who would dance until he was too tired and had to leave the body. It was as if I could imagine the world in which Jesus made spirits rush into pigs or some other great biblical illustration were coming to life. I could feel the narrow edges of Western medicinal beliefs being slowly peeled away. Somehow, I was becoming more in tune with myself by visiting this small, smudged-up structure. I am sure it is a place rarely visited by mzungus.

He is a traditional healer, a local doctor. He was given this power by his ancestors; spirits led him into a forest and when he woke again, stumbling back, he was carrying medicine. He derives his power from both his ancestors and from God. He cures malaria with parts from trees he must travel great distances to obtain and has trained many people under him to carry on his legacy. It reminded me of an essay I read before landing in this foreign land, about how African systems of thinking are not easily reducible to European processes of logic. It seemed that I was becoming a part of an age old tradition that surpassed people themselves. Huddling together in his small waiting room with its chipped blue paint and concrete floor, I listened as he explained the relationship between him and the modern medicine. They work together, refer patients to each other. They learn from each other. Once, he realized the patient was getting worse and sent him to the hospital, only to be called on by them later to stabilize the patient in order for the hospital staff to complete the procedure.

We traveled along a bumpy and dusty road, past scores of pedestrians and little dukas until finally; we halted amidst the heat and a cloud of choking dirt only to discover our way into a dual ofisi/home where a traditional healer holds his residence and prominent, years-long reputation. The short, stooped man had a face of wrinkles and folded amidst them, piercing eyes filled with spark. We crowded around him in a small room and became immersed in his world.

YOUR VOICE AFRICAN JOURNEYS By Clarindra Solberg

A5: Any final comments? Where can fans reach you/follow you? Just to let you all know, we play in Grand Forks on March 9th and 10th at the Ho Bar. We hope to see you there. If you would like to check us out a little more, you can find us at eaglecreektheband.com. We have pictures, upcoming events and much more on there, so check it out. Hope to see you all at our next upcoming events. Thanks.

A5: Do you have any interesting/amusing band stories you wish to share? After eleven years of playing, there are almost too many stories to share. Every night on stage, there are new stories happening all the time. The things you get to see, the people you get to meet, and the places we get to play. Its all a story. Weve gotten to play and meet some big names along our journey. Weve played with Neal McCoy, Phil Vassar, Emerson Drive, Steve Holy, Bucky Covington, and a few others. Its a lot of fun.

A5: What is the main incentive for being in the band? Do you have any future/long-term goals? The main reason we started the band and continue to do what we do can be explained in one word. FUN. We want to have fun doing what we do. When we started, we always said if it felt like it was becoming a job, we would hang it up. Well, weve been together almost eleven years now, and were still here and were having fun. There are always goals, like making CDs, making it big in Nashville, and becoming a star, but we dont look ahead that far. We take it day by day and just enjoy what were doing.

A5:Describe your sound and the atmosphere of your shows. What kind of music do you play? When we started playing, we always told ourselves that we werent going to play for ourselves; we were going to play for the crowds. We wanted to have a big variety of music so everyone could come out and enjoy us. And thats what we do. We have five guys in the group that can play and sing like no other. It doesnt matter if youre young or old, we play music for everyone. We play a mix of new country and old, classic rock, a mix of 50s and even some new style rock. From the harmonies of Alabama to the rocking of Skynard, we play it all. We like to move around on stage, and we like to get the crowd involved. When you come out and watch us, you better have your vocals warmed up because you will be singing along.

& 3RD THE ARTS DOWNTOWNS NEW FASHION STORE: KITTSONContributing Writer By Suzanne Irwin,

Two women started a downtown shop to outfit clients in chic and cost-effective attire. Kittson & 3rd co-owners Nicole Schiller and Tessa Hiney are bringing their passion for fashion to Grand Forks, N.D. patrons. They say the location of their unique boutique was an easy choice. Both Tessa and I are from the area, this is where our heart is, Nicole Schiller Kittson & 3rd co-owner explains. But their business has more benefits than a paycheck. Its important for us to help each woman feel beautiful and special in their own way and have the ability to look good without breaking the bank. When you look good, you feel good! explains Schiller. The duo says they work to feature unique and classy pieces. In addition to their one-of-a-kind wardrobes, they bring something else to their specialty store. Being able to provide superior one-on-one service to our clients, we are excited to create relationships and a positive experience for everyone that walks in our door, Schiller adds. They explain that their background and customer focus sets their boutique apart. Our age has helped us connect with a wide range of clientele, maximize the use of social media and become involved members in the community, Schiller explains. Tessa and I are eager to make a positive impact on area women and downtown Grand Forks as a whole. Kittson & 3rd storeowners say they have worked with a variety of clients. We have had ten year olds find things they enjoy as well as many grandmothers! No age is limited to looking good, Schiller adds. We want each woman to feel happy, comfortable in their style and that they are getting a good value for their money. Being able to give attention to each individual is our goal. Now city center shoppers may find the perfect upscale outfit with the help of two ambitious fashionistas.

LBISTRO/cont. from page 4

My friends chicken was seasoned just right and juicy. The greens in the salad were crisp and fresh, and the soft, warm pitas complemented the meat and vegetables. With full stomachs, we didnt give dessert a try, but I Bistro offers specialties like their deep fried cheesecake. The cheesecake is served wrapped in a tortilla shell, filled with apples, deep-fried and then topped with whipped cream and caramel sauce. If youd rather drink your dessert, I Bistro offers several coffee-based liquor drinks. One that sounded especially tempting was the French Kiss, a mixture of coffee, crme de cacao, Irish cream and amaretto almond liqueur. Besides the food, the most enjoyable part of the meal was the service. My server was very attentive, even when I ended up waiting quite a while for my friend to join me. Due to inclement road conditions, he was 45 minutes late. When he finally arrived my server came over right away. While we were looking over the menu, another server walked past and remarked, Yay, shes not getting stood up. I got a good laugh out of the line, and Im glad that other staff members were concerned about me as well. It says a lot about a place when the serving staff members pay attention to not only their own sections but their coworkers sections as well. If youre interested in more than just food, the restaurant also plays host to jazz nights on Thursdays and a wine club on Tuesdays. COVER SPRING IS HERE! CHECK OUT THE ANNUAL MOTORCYCLE SHOW HELD AT THE ALERUS CENTER
By Jeff Peterson, Contributing Writer
Kick stands up motorcycle dudes, bikerettes and those of you that simply love motorcycles. Time to blow some winter dust off your leathers and give your bike its first peek at 2012 sunshine. On Saturday, April 14th and Sunday, April 15th the Red River Valley Motorcyclists (RRVM) will again host what has become the largest motorcycle show in North Dakota. The Alerus Center in Grand Forks will open its doors at 9:00 am each day and will close at 7:00 pm on Saturday and 4:00 pm on Sunday. The RRVM team is back at it again and excited to announce that the 2012 motorcycle show is dedicated to the Fire and Rescue Operations in the Red River Valley. Weve got 32 departments in the upper valley that extend from the Canadian border to Mayville and both sides of the valley that needs new equipment and help with their training costs, said Tim Gowan, RRVM President and owner of Street is Neat in Oslo, MN. Its the very least we can do to give back to those that have stepped forward and volunteered to protect our lives and property. Were privileged to have this opportunity. There will be live auction Sunday afternoon that will benefit the International Movement Promoting Assault Contravention Training (IMPACT) program. This highly specialized self-defense program is offered to all women 18 and older. In addition to the many other fantastic bikes on display there will be a new 2012 Harley Davidson Road King Firefighters Special Edition that will be raffled off at the show. Tickets are available at Andys Harley Davidson, Street is Neat, most volunteer fire departments and through members of the RRVM. Live entertainment for both days of the event will be the fantastic Downtown Horns. Based out of Grand Forks, The Downtown Horns is a classic rock-and-roll horn band performing the greatest, most recognizable and danceable hit songs from the 1960's through today spanning many different musical styles and genres, including: classic and "oldies" rock, the best of today's pop, Motown, blues, rhythm and blues, soul, funk, swing, even a few polkas and waltzes something for everyone! The North Dakota Patriot Guard (NDPG) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be represented as well. The NDPG mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Their mission is sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities. When necessary and invited to do so, they shield the mourning family and friends from interruptions created by any protester or group of protesters. The latter is accomplished through strictly legal and non-violent means. The RRVM is a non-profit organization that, since 2001, has donated $81,500 to area charities. ABATEs Little Spoke Fund (motorcycle education) will also receive a portion of monies donated. This year, as has been done in the past, the RRVM is asking that show visitors please bring new teddy bears for donation to the Bear Hugs Program. These bears are collected in the memory of Cannon Bear Hebl and RRVM member Roger Ready who passed away in 2009. Bear Hugs provide comfort to families of seriously ill children.
