Introduction A field work programme provides an opportunity to students to apply their theoretical knowledge taught in the classroom appropriately

in different practical situations. It is considered to be learning through doing. Field work in social work education refers to training that goes hand in hand with the education. Field work binds theory with practice, combines philosophy with action, and integrates the understanding about people with methods of helping them. The techniques drew heavily on scientific knowledge about people and social phenomena. It is functional and technical in nature, and fosters learning in students. Field work brings the students face to face with social problems or personal distress. The significance and purpose of field work training can be summed up in the definition given below: Field work has been defined as an educationally sponsored attachment of social work students to an institution, agency, or a section of community, in which they are helped to extend their knowledge and understanding, and experience the impact of human needs. Field work practice is an integral part of social work education with the emphasis on learning through doing. In field work, the student although a learner is at the same time dealing directly with life situations and under the guidance of a field work supervisor, is expected to deliver services commensurate with agency practice. Through the field work practice, students are helped to become competent professional social workers.
