In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

About Allah ( )
First, I'll speak about "Allah" being the proper, or according to some scholars the
greatest, name of God.
There are several points to be made regarding this name:
• No one else ever had or will have this name.
• The name Allah has no gender ;( according to Arabic Grammar) not male or
female. “He” is used in the Quran only out of respect and dignity.
• The name Allah is always singular, never plural. “We” is used in the Quran only
as the royal “We” to signify the greatness of Allah. Look how the word God can be
plural and can be male or female, the same thing in Arabic.
• The name Allah has three meanings: the One who deserves to be worshipped,
the One whose existence is a must (He has always been and always shall be), and
the Unique One.
• Arab Christians overseas use Allah as the name of God.

Secondly, the essence of Islam is to accept no deity worthy of worship except Allah.
Hence it is essential to have a good understanding about Allah’s attributes as precisely
as possible within our limited abilities. This understanding is to be based only on the
Quran and the Sunnah (whatever the prophet said and confirmed). Our understanding
of the Creator of the universe is to be derived from no other sources beyond these two.
We are not permitted to go beyond the description of Allah (names and attributes)
contained in the Quran and Sunnah.
There are several points to be made regarding the names and attributes of Allah:
1) We are not permitted to think or believe He is similar to any of His creation, as
He says in the Quran (42-11). "There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-
Hearer, the All-Seer”. So, we believe He has a hand but not like our hands and a
face but not like our faces. He sees, hears, speaks, rose up above His throne…etc.
but again He is not doing things the way we do them.
2) We are not permitted to deny, negate or even justify any of them as long as they
are mentioned in the Quran or Sunnah. (Ex. To say His hand refers to power)
3) We believe that we aren't able to see Him in this life. However, the believers will
be able to see him clearly in the Day of Judgment and in Paradise, and the most
pleasurable thing to them in Paradise is looking at His face.
4) Allah has guided us to Him through countless signs and proofs which, when
sincerely examined, will definitely bring us to Him as He does not ask us to
believe in something ambiguous or self contradictory or proven false. He also
wants us to worry about the knowledge that would benefit us and which have
practical consequences or fruitful results in the end.
5) Scholars have compiled ninety-nine beautiful names of Allah from the Quran and
the Sunnah. Allah wants us to supplicate to Him using these beautiful names.

*Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was asked by his people about Allah; the answer came
directly from Allah in the form of a short chapter in the Quran, which is considered
the essence of the unity or the motto of monotheism. This is chapter 112 which reads:
Say (O Muhammad (SAW)): "He is Allâh, (the) One.[] (1) "Allâh-us-Samad [Allâh
the Self-Sufficient Master, Whom all creatures need. (2) "He begets not, nor was
He begotten;(3) "And there is none equal or comparable unto Him." (4)

*This chapter emphasizes the oneness and uniqueness of Allah; He has set two rules
for believing in His Oneness:
1) Whoever takes any other creature as a mediator between him and Allah is not
considered a believer, the disbelievers or idol-worshippers in Arabia at the time of
prophet Mohammad (PBUH) used to say that they only worshipped those idols to
bring them closer to Allah. (Ex. Hossain, Imran’s father)
2) Believing in Him alone is not sufficient if it does not culminate in actions and good
deeds. It is fair enough to practice the five pillars of Islam.

*There is another verse in the Quran (2:255) which is considered the greatest verse in
the whole Quran, because it contains the major attributes of Allah:

“llâh! Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever
Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber, nor
sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever
is on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission?
He knows what happens to (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen
to them in the Hereafter. And they will never compass anything of His
Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursî[] extends over the heavens
and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He
is the Most High, the Most Great”.

This verse shades light on the sovereignty of Allah. We believe that our obedience,
good deeds…etc are for our own benefit. He doesn't need us, we need Him. Our
disobedience hurts us; it doesn't hurt Him in anyway. We depend on Him, He doesn't
depend on us.
We're going to touch briefly on just three of the attributes of Allah:
*Among the most important attributes of Allah is that He is the Most Merciful. There
are numerous proofs of His mercy, but I'll only present you some:
1) It is enough to know that, with the exception of one, each of the 114 chapters of the
Quran begins with the verse: "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most
Compassionate”.
2) In one of the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) we are told that "God is more
loving and kinder than a mother to her dear child.
3) Allah says that He extends His hands day and night calling upon His servants to
come back to Him and ask His forgiveness. He promised to forgive any kind of sin one
can imagine except for one unforgivable sin which is having a partner with Him.
4) Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) gave an example of the magnitude of happiness that
Allah is having when one of His servants comes back to Him in repentance. (The
Hadeeth of the man in the desert)

*But God is also the Most Just. Hence evildoers and sinners must have their share of
punishment if they didn't repent and the virtuous, His bounties and favors. Actually
God's attribute of Mercy has full manifestation in His attribute of Justice. People
suffering throughout their lives for His sake and people oppressing and exploiting
other people all their lives should not receive similar treatment from Allah. Expecting
similar treatment for them will amount to negating the very belief in the
accountability of man in the Hereafter and thereby negating all the incentives for a
moral and virtuous life in this world. The following Quranic verses are very clear and
straightforward in this respect:
"Verily, for the Righteous are gardens of Delight, in the Presence of their Lord. Shall
We then treat the people of Faith like the people of Sin? What is the matter with you?
How judge you?" (68:34-36)

* Among the names of Allah is that He is the All-Knowing. We believe that Allah has
created the Heavens and the universe then He rose above His throne. Prophet
Mohammad (PBUH) said that the whole universe with the heavens compared to the
throne of Allah is like a ring in a desert; completely insignificant. He is up there but
His knowledge is everywhere, as He said in (2: 186)
“When My servants ask thee concerning Me, I am indeed close (to them); I listen
to the prayer of every suppliant when he calleth on Me”

He also says (50: 16)

“And indeed We have created man, and We know what his ownself
whispers to him. And We are nearer to him than his jugular vein”.
Not only mankind but the very minute part of the universe as well. He says (6: 59)
“And with Him are the keys of (all that is hidden-or- the unseen), none
knows them but He. And He knows whatever there is in the land and in
the sea; not a leaf falls, but he knows it. There is not a grain in the
darkness of the earth nor anything fresh or dry, but is written in a Clear
Record.”
