HISTORY OF AIR CONDITIONING The concept of air conditioning is known to have been applied in Ancient Rome, where aqueduct water was circulated through the walls of certain houses to cool them down. Other techniques in medieval Persia involved the use of cisterns and wind towers to cool buildings during the hot season. Modern air conditioning emerged from advances in chemistry during the 19th century, and the first large-scale electrical air conditioning was invented and used in 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier

HISTORY OF REFRI GERATION

Hebrews, Greeks, and Romans placed large amounts of snow into storage pits dug into the ground and insulated with wood and straw. The ancient Egyptians filled earthen jars with boiled water and put them on their roofs, thus exposing the jars to the nights cool air. In India, evaporative cooling was employed. When a liquid vaporizes rapidly, it expands quickly.

Father of Air Conditioning

Willis Haviland Carrier

*(November 26, 1876 October 7, 1950) was an American engineer and inventor, and is known as the man who invented modern air conditioning.

*Father of Refrigeration*

John Gorrie
*(October 3, 1803 June 29, 1855) was a physician, scientist, inventor, and humanitarian. He is considered the father of refrigeration and air conditioning.

Trivia
*After several more years of refinement and field testing, on January 2, 1906, Carrier was granted U.S. patent No. 808897 on his invention, which he called an "Apparatus for Treating Air," the world's first spray-type air conditioning equipment. It was designed to humidify or dehumidify air, heating water for the first and cooling it for the second.

Bad Facts about our earth
1.

If you throw away 2 aluminum cans, they spend more energy than 1,000,000,000 (six billion) of the world's poorest people use a day. 2. You can start a new one from the uses of the uses of energy equal to half a can of gasoline 3. More than 1,000,000,000 (one billion) trees are used to make disposable diapers every year, . 4. Some rain has a pH of 3 or 4. (which is acidic, considering 7 is neutral, not acidic, & battery acid has a pH of 1). Some fish, like lake trout & smallmouth bass, have difficulty reproducing at a pH of 6, which is only somewhat acidic. Some clams & snails cannot last. Most crayfish are dead at a pH of 5. You can see how bad this is for the environment. 5. On average, a person in the US uses energy two times more than a person in Japan or West Germany does, and 50 times more than a person in India.

Things we can do to help

1. Turn off other electric things, like TVs, stereos, and radios when not in use . 2. Use rechargable batteries. 3. Do things manually instead of electricity, like open cans by hand . 4. Try to buy fruits and vegetables, if you're worried about pesticides. (Organic foods are grown without artificial fertilizers or pesticides) . 5. Supporting products that are harvested from the forest, but have not cut down trees to make .
