Water Splitting By Sukanya Harris

With the 9 volt battery nothing happened for the three minutes. As shown on the graph below.
1 minute 0 bubbles 2 minutes 0 bubbles 3 minutes 0 bubbles

With the 1.5 volt battery nothing happened for three minutes. As shown on the graph below.
1 minute 0 bubbles 2 minutes 0 bubbles 3 minutes 0 bubbles

I have received these results because I may think I have done something wrong. I cannot pin point where I have gone wrong in this experiment, but something is not quite right. My data does not support my hypothesis because my hypothesis was that the water splitting will work, but shown by the data I was proved wrong.

The outcome of my experiment is that the experiment failed. Nothing happened with either kind of battery. Also no bubbles were formed at the graphite of the pencil in the water. My data did not support my hypothesis. If it did, bubbles would have formed with either the 9 volt battery or the 1.5 volt battery.

I could recommend that maybe in the future, I could look deeper into this topic and possibly see where I went wrong.

I have conducted this experiment because I would like to test splitting water into its two main components, oxygen and hydrogen. I found out when I finished the experiment that the water did not split into its two main components. Instead, nothing happened. My results are important because it is part of the evidence that I have conducted the experiment. Also because the results is the whole experiment the research, procedures, and data collected.

Can water be split into its two main components, oxygen and hydrogen. I think the outcome of my experiment would be that the water will split into oxygen and hydrogen because many scientists have already looked into the topic. This is my science topic because I wanted to see if you could actually split water. I hoped to learn that I could possible split water, then if it worked I could try other liquids to see what happens. This is because if water could be

split then maybe the water in other liquids could be split to.

Procedures 1.) Sharpen each pencil at both ends 2.) Cut the cardboard so it covers the top of the glass (rectangular shape) 3.) Push the two pencils into the cardboard, one inch apart 4.) Dissolve a teaspoon of salt into the warm water and let it sit for three minutes 5.) Using one piece of electrical wire, connect one end of the positive side of the

battery and the other to the black graphite at the top of the sharpened pencil. Do the same for the negative side connecting it to the second pencil top. 6.) Place the other two ends that dont have the wire attached to it, into the salted water.

The pencil ends are taken off, so that the electricity from the battery will flow through the pencil and into the water. The table salt is included so that the electricity will be conducted better.
