Therefore it invests in supporting the Gulf Educational Supplies and Solutions (GESS) and the Global Education Forum (GEF), the world renowned event held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. The great success achieved by GESS and GEF over the past four years is the sure outcome of the strategic partnership between the MOE and the international company organizing the exhibition and the conference. The event has succeeded in establishing its reputation as a main destination for education professionals and decision makers who wish to discover the latest products and innovations in various aspects of the education sector. This year the exhibition will have over 250 regional and international exhibitors showcasing modern education techniques, products and solutions; while GEF will bring together over 100 industry leaders and continue as a strong platform to discuss bestpractices, trends and challenges the sector faces today. In its fifth edition this year, the exhibition and conference will revolve around the theme of Teaching and Learning in the Knowledge and Technology era. It is a great pleasure to welcome you to this years Global Education Forum (GEF). The Conference will be opened by HE Humaid Mohd Al Qutami, Minister of Education of the UAE and is held under the theme Teaching and Learning in the Knowledge and Technology Era. Throughout the next 3 days, you will find an extensive educational programme with a wide range of seminars, workshops, abstracts under the theme of technology. We are pleased to welcome a range of international and regional high-calibre keynote speakers addressing todays key education topics. This year all the sessions will take place in the exhibition hall which allows you to easily move between all the different sessions. The following guide will give you the time and details of each session, the British and UAE flags indicate which language the sessions will be conducted in. Room numbers are indicated across the top and are colour coded with the session titles. We hope this is self-explanatory but please ask a member of staff if you are unsure! Dont forget to visit the exhibition hall! You will find a wide range of international and local education supplies and solutions providers. Prof. Abdullateef Hussain Haidar Al Hakimi, Phd
Professor of Science Education Sanaa University
At present, Dr. Abdullateef H. Haidar Al Hakimi is a Professor of science education at Sanaa University. He is the ex-Dean of the College of Education at United Arab Emirates University. As part of this job, he oversaw the international accreditation efforts at the College of Education. He is a well known figure in the Arab Gulf region and the Middle East in accreditation standards and program redesign. He provides assistance to Colleges of Education that are interested in developing quality teacher education programs that meet accreditation standards. He provided such assistance to the colleges of education at the University of Qatar, the University of Bahrain and King Saud University. He participated also in reforming teaching and learning at the United Arab Emirates University and the Ministry of Education in the UAE. He assisted MOE in developing curriculum frameworks and school textbooks based on vision 2020. He provides consulting work to Abu Dhabi Educational Council and King Abdelaziz and His Companions for Giftedness and Creativity. Al Hakimi maintains good international contacts with many international organizations such as, NARST, NCATE, AACTE, CQAIE, and the New England Association for Schools and Colleges. His educational philosophy is based on the conception that we can make a better and peaceful world by offering quality education. Dr. Khalid Ibrahim Al Awwad


Dr. Khalid Ibrahim Al Awwad obtained PHD in Sociology of Organization from Wales University in UK (Cardiff). He has obtained a Masters degree from Michigan State University in USA. Now he works as a member of the Shura Council and a Head of Masarat Group for Studies and Development in Educational, social, administrative and technological field. He has worked as a Deputy Minister for Educational development and then as Minister for Education. He worked as an Associate Professor of Sociology in King Saud University. Dr. Al Awwad works as a Consultant in various organizations and public Saudi bodies. Also, he works as a Consultant for some political leaders in his country in addition to a Consultant of the Arabian Education Office of the Gulf Countries. Moreover, he cooperates with national and charitable organizations in addition to think tank organizations. He has participated in shaping the national vision of the Kingdom besides various programs concerned with shaping and forming the national and private strategic plans. He has prepared and participated in various studies and researches mainly in the field of education, social and building strategies. Some of his ideas and proposals have been implemented in different areas. Examples include the Pioneer Schools (Ideal Schools), national students IT clubs, some studies and works in the field of administrative and organizational development, various studies in the field of social work and the organization of the civil society. He focuses his work in the fields of private and public education, administrative leadership, setting up organizational work and its evaluation. Also, he concentrates some of his work in the field of the organization of civil society. He believes that the comprehensive development can be achieved within the organizational work that needs an effective and characterized design presided by a successful leadership and human efficiencies who are well prepared as well as the sound planning. This is what Dr. Al Awwad seeks to achieve within his various scientific and practical activities locally and regionally.

Dr. Khalifa Ali Alsuwaidi is the Assistant Professor at Department of Curriculum & Instruction, Faculty of Education, United Arab Emirates University. He joined the Department in 1994. He held a number of teaching and administrative positions at the UAE University. Dr. Khalifa worked as a Dean of University General Requirements Unit, Deputy Dean of Faculty of Education, Member of the Higher Committee of the United Arab Emirates, Curriculum at Ministry of Education. Dr. Khalifa is the presenter and script writer at Abu Dhabi TV (step). Dr. Khalifas specialization is in Curriculum and Instruction. He has also been honored by Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed award for academic excellence (UAE), Excellence award for University and Community Service (199697), and Best UAE national teacher project award (2004) as well as best finalist National IT organizational award (2006) from the UAE educational IT challenge Khalifa Award for education 2008. He and his team of technical inventors and educational wizards build mobile apps, tools and websites to serve learners and educators across the world. Every year over 1.2m learners use their tools and resources.

His mission is to find practical and meaningful uses for emerging technologies, embracing the power of web2.0, Social Media and Open Source Solutions to help to make learning work better for all with a particular focus on hard to reach, excluded or disadvantaged learners. Together with John Davitt, he developed the recently released Learning Score (www.learningscore.org), a tool to liberate teachers from the constraints of traditional lesson plans. He is also considered one of the Godfathers of Mobile Learning, and has travelled the world encouraging practitioners to embrace mobile tools and opportunities since 2001. He was recently appointed advisor to the US Government on their first large-scale mobile learning project which will provide mobile apps to support aid workers and locals in disaster relief situations. Before launching her company in 2009, Maria managed international research for Microsoft in the areas of communications, citizenship strategy and policy research. She led a team responsible for research in over 40 countries. Dr. Langworthy holds a M.A. degree in International Relations and a Ph.D. in Political Sociology, both from Boston University.

Elise Tarvainen
Director of Global Operations EduCluster Finland Ltd
Elise manages the global operations of the company and the work of EduCluster Finland experts in different partnership programmes. Ms. Tarvainen has extensive experience of working as an expert in education and human resource development as well as in leading regional learning and innovation processes. She has a degree in education (M.A.), with a qualification as a class teacher and a subject teacher in Finnish education and her Ph.D. studies are in the field educational leadership and administration specializing in school safety and student wellbeing issues. She has worked 14 years as a K-12 teacher and been actively involved in school-based development processes related to the implementation of Finnish National Core Curriculum in local contexts with tens of school providers all over Finland. Her focus has been on developing learner centered school communities and school operational culture with student-centered teaching and learning methods. She has also expertise in working with regional administration and educational reforms in local labour market development, in preventing dropouts and promoting students participation in the society. She has considerable international experience with projects all around the world. Most recently she has been in charge of creating the foundations for the Abu Dhabi Finland Education Partnership Programme. The partnership with Abu Dhabi Education Council and EduCluster Finland Ltd. has offered a unique possibility to create an innovative, world-class school model by fusing the best practices from the Emirati and Finnish school systems.

Maria Langworthy
Founder and Principal Langworthy Research
Maria Langworthy is the founder and principal of Langworthy Research. She is a social scientist who has worked for over 15 years studying the intersection of public and private spheres, and how shifts in social and economic patterns influence culture and systems. She currently focuses on education policy research, globally managing the Innovative Teaching and Learning (ITL) Research project. ITL Research is a multiyear global research program devoted to researching and supporting the evolution of innovative teaching practices. The programs global sponsor is Microsofts Partners in Learning, in partnership with governments, research organizations and other stakeholders around the world. In Phase I of this research program (2009--11), researchers in 7 countries used investigated innovative teaching in each country, its relationship to students development of 21st century skills, and the school and system factors that support teachers adoption of new teaching methods. In Phase II, the focus of the program shifts toward directly supporting teachers and schools as they seek to improve their practices.

Mobile Learning: Lessons from around the world The rise of personal, connected consumer technology is unavoidable. Smartphones allow access to immediate, context aware information anytime and anywhere. This is already transforming the way working adults access information, but what does this mean for education? Can these technologies adapt to support existing modes of learning? Or are they agents for change, helping educators re-shape their teaching and discover richer ways to learn? Social Media for Learning: back to Societal Education The Lecture presents that the concept of Learning does not change over time, which is primarily a process between human and another, even with the development of e-content and non electronic content, as we can say that the creator of that content is human. Accordingly, learning is a social process, and it is possible to say (learning is societal by nature) based on Ibn Khaldoun saying Man is sociable or civil by nature. The paper presents comparisons between the traditional learning (schooling) and informal societal learning is the coming wave as it is more useful for learning content, speed of communication and large capacity of humans relationship with others without borders, besides it can lead to greater educational effectiveness. The writer had intended to link his point of view with the foundations of learning being identified by UNESCO (learning to know, learning to work, learning to be, learning to live together) and the skills of the twenty-first century. The writer also tried to explore the historical review of learning, where a person learns in the community and then the school took the role through(formal learning) and now, learning reruns back to the society as a result of heavy e-content and effective social networking. After a comparison between formal and social learning, the writer urges education officials and educators to integrate social (informal) education in the structure of formal schooling or education through reviewing the education system including legislation, application, and evaluation in a completely different and a perfect systematic way.

Mobile learning in practise: Exploring pedagogies, practicalities and technologies Geoff Stead is considered one of the godfathers of mobile learning. He has been fortunate enough to be involved in many innovative projects across the world, from high tech employers in the UK to impoverished schools in Africa, exploring the optimum blend of technology, pedagogy, teacher support and learner engagement. In this workshop we will explore a range of very differrence educational scenarios, discussing how mobile learning might be used to optimum effect. The workshop will start by exploring several high profile international projects, following the pedagogical design patterns to understand both the approach behind the project, and the successes and failings of each approach. Attendees will then have the opportunity to design and evaluate their own m-learning scenarios, working with colleagues to find the best way to integrate these emerging technologies into their own learning, or teaching scenarios. Also included will be some live demonstrations, practical tips for early adopters and access to further online resources to support teachers and learners.

We must acknowledge that we are facing a big gap facing education now, between the mode of training and development for teachers in a time does not accept the this traditional way, and there is a must for the transformation of training and development pattern to a new or modern one, This workshop proposes the transition from formal education and training for teachers and administrators to informal or societal learning and development on the ground that we are living in the era of information and communication technology through social networking, which has become a development tools for teachers that must be invested efficiently. This workshop offers practical suggestions for the transition to this new method of learning which is characterized by heavy content and the ability of the teacher to produce knowledge, participating in and across all borders temporal and spatial with those who want to learn, as well as this kind of learning is characterized by the fun, excitement and almost zero cost. This pattern of education cannot be achieved except only through pattern enhancing the idea with courage to apply in a perfect organizational environment that integrates informal learning in the structure of formal learning and professional development training .

10.00-11.00 Unthinking Classes Educators would agree unanimously on the importance that thinking and teaching thinking had in the past, and still have in the current point of time as the Arab nation is reinventing itself. In a world where borders were eliminated by digital technology, and fundamentals were shaken, there is no more excuse for not teaching students the scientific approach to thinking. If we do not utilise thinking effectively, then our future as Arabs will be gloomy. Promoting the importance of the mind and thinking at times of our turmoil is the required solution; otherwise our passion as Arabs will lead us into a foreign storm -Western or Eastern, but surely not an Arabic one. A nation deprived the blessing of the mind, asking others to think on its behalf, is the weakest of all. Students of the future will live at a time that is different than ours. Therefore, in order for them to succeed, they must be prepared and armed with tools, the most important of which are healthy, scientific and structured ways of thinking. Our schools today are in dire need to declare a state of emergency in their curriculum and among their teachers in order to push us towards teaching thinking before the winds of change overwhelm us. First, it introduces the concept of joy, and then it presents the nature of children as they learn spending untold hours in play and joy. Innovative teaching and learning research: moving from theory to capacity-building Educators around the world recognize the need to transform teaching and learning to connect with the social and labour realities of the 21st Century. However, moving from the goal of 21st century learning to actually transforming teaching practices in ways that develop students future skills remains a challenge in most classrooms and schools. The Innovative Teaching and Learning (ITL) Research project is a multiyear global research program devoted to researching and supporting the evolution of innovative teaching practices in a variety of country contexts. The programs global sponsor is Microsofts Partners in Learning, in partnership with governments and other stakeholders. In phase I of this research program (200911), researchers in 7 countries investigated the practices of innovative teaching in each country, its relationship to students development of 21st century skills, and the school and system factors that support teachers adoption of new approaches. In phase II, the program is shifting to directly support teachers and schools as they seek to advance their practices. In this talk you will see what innovative teaching looks like in classrooms around the world today, and hear what this research shows about how to best advance and promote the broader adoption of this type of teachingthrough schools, policies and new collaborative learning programs.

The Information and Communication Technology (ITC) Fund is dedicated to advancing the UAE ICT sector and it is fuelling innovation in the local industry. The ICT Funds mission is to provide targeted funding to companies, organisations and individuals to empower them to develop the innovation and knowledge capital of the UAE ICT sector with their basic and applied research and development, education and entrepreneurship. ICT Fund aims to promote a culture of entrepreneurship in the UAE ICT sector by improving linkage between industry and academia. ICT Fund aims to create a self-reliant eco-system in the UAE ICT sector promoting the involvement of UAE nationals in scientific and technological research in order to reach this outcome: Made in the UAE, Sold Globally. The Fund will nurture business incubators in the UAE that support the development of new ideas and provide early stage start-ups with financing, management expertise and infrastructure support. By enabling teams to carry out world-class research, both basic and applied and advancing the level of theoretical and practical understanding of ICT, the ICT Fund is driving sector growth in the UAE. The ICT Fund plans to engage multinational corporations to create high quality research and development institutions in the UAE. The ICT Fund is the first of its kind in the Middle East, its CEO is H.E. Dr. Easa Bastaki. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees is H.E. Dr. Abdulqader Al Khayat. The UAE telecommunication market has grown from USD 8.2 billion in 2005 to USD 13.6 billion between 2010-2013. UAE is the second country leading in ICT expenditure in the region. The current areas of interest for the ICT Fund include: wireless technology, security and encryption, information security, broadband technology, satellite communications, sensor area networks and areas of vital National Interest. Projects to date include: Ankabut and Betha. Ankabut: Ankabut is the UAE National Research and Education Network (NREN) offering academic institutions connectivity to other education networks around the world. Ankabut also co-operates on a national, GCC, regional and international arena representing the UAE in conferences, R&D, exhibitions and forums. Ankabut aims to offer QoS based networks with IPv4/IPv6, multicast and introduce advanced services on a Closed Group Network with Public Interest Purposes. betha (Scholarship) Program: The goal of Betha is to create a specialised and well trained ICT human workforce in the UAE. Betha supports national education efforts by bridging the educational outcomes with the needs of the evolving job market. The ICT Fund has a major investment strategy for 2011 investing across its platforms in scholarships, start-ups and research projects. Forecasted investment-spending for R&D in 2011 is AED 22 million. Forecasted investment-spending for Education in 2011 is: AED 58 million.
