Technique File Technique 1 Name of Technique: R.A.F.T.

Paper Describe the Technique: Students will read the article Mathematical Firsts Who Done It? and then write the RAFT paper. R- role of the writer, which in this case will be a game show host. A- audience, this is who the students would be writing to, which will be the contestants on the game show. F- format, the students will be writing questions that the game show host would ask the contestants about the article, along with the answers. Ttopic, what it is the students will be writing the format of the paper about, in this case it will be the article the students have read on the history of math. Using Technique Will Help Students: Using this technique will help the students by making them ask themselves questions about the reading and then answering the questions they ask themselves and then further understand the reading. Also other students will be making up questions that they can share with each other and get even more knowledge on the reading. How does it Work: When reading the article students will hopefully pay more attention to important facts as they will have to write questions about the reading and then also answer questions that their classmates come up with. Assessment: Assessment of the task could be done a couple of ways. One way is that you, as the teacher, make a review game out of the questions the students have submitted for the paper and assess how well they answer the questions. Another way to assess the students is to actually make a quiz/test out of the questions they have submitted and grade it. Example: article Mathematical Firsts Who Done It? R Game show host A- Contestants F Questions (with answers) T History of math The topic for this question is math history; contestants are you ready. The question is name 2 of the 4 ancient cities believed to have known the Pythagorean theorem. Contestants here is the answer the four cities are Babylonia, India, Greece, and China.

Technique 2 Name of Technique: Connections chart Describe the Technique: After reading, Why you should choose math in high school students will be making a connections chart which will have 2 columns. The first column will be titled Headings and students will label the different sections of the reading here, the second column will be How/Why and students will explain how or why choosing math in high school for each section of the reading is important. Using Technique Will Help Students: Using this technique will give multiple reasons why studying math in high school is important and will then give them a purpose for their learning and hopefully make it more enjoyable since they may get a goal from the reading. How does it Work: By placing a how/why with a statement students will be able to easily see the connections made in the reading and get them to want to learn high school math. Assessment: For assessment I will ask the students to hand in their connection charts and see that they got the main idea out of each section. As I have also read the article I will know the reasons and if I am unable to figure out where a student came up with their idea I will ask them for their reasoning and assess from their. Example: Headings Makes you smarter You will make more money How/Why Math makes you think smart and critically Gets you and education and lifetime earning more than celebrities

Technique 3 Name of Technique: ReQuest (Reciprocal Questioning) Describe the Technique: While reading the article schools + kids = math tests students will write down questions that come to their minds that may be answered later. The idea is to try and predict what will happen in the reading. After reading the students will discuss with other students. Using Technique Will Help Students: Using this technique will help students be able to learn how to predict what will be coming up in a reading and this anticipation will prepare them for what does come up and further their learning because the can reflect on why their were right or why they were wrong. How does it Work: By asking and writing questions down while you are reading the article it will force you to anticipate what will happen and then see if you were correct and then get a deeper meaning from the reading. Assessment: After the reading is complete and the students have discussed with their peers about the reading they will turn in their questions with the answers to those questions and an explanation of why they asked that question. Example: A question that may come up while reading could be if our math teachers dont know how to solve the problems given to us (students) how are we expected to learn them? Then a discussion of the answer would start between the students.

Technique 4 Name of Technique: KWL Describe the Technique: Students will be asked before reading an article to write down what they already know about the subject and what they want to learn about the subject. After they read the article students will write down what they learned from it and then discuss with the other students. Using Technique Will Help Students: By using this technique students will draw on prior knowledge to start thinking about what they already know and then they can focus on what they dont know yet when they read the article, thus focusing on the more important information. How does it Work: By asking the students to write down what they already know and what they want to learn you as the teacher are able to construct your lesson plans in order to make the best lessons for your students so they learn the must. Assessment: Can assess the students by looking over what they wrote in the learned column or have a small group discussion to see what everyone learned from the article. Example: K SAT is college entrance exam W Why havent scores on SAT been changing L Scores can be related to income of families

Technique 5 Name of Technique: Anticipation Guide Describe the Technique: Teacher provides a chart with facts already filled in about article math in the United States and students are to state whether they think the fact is true or false before reading the article and then answer after reading the article and give a page number of where they found the answer. Using Technique Will Help Students: By using this technique students will have to predict what will happen and then see if they are correct when reading the article. It will help them focus on what you have determined to be important facts and give them a purpose for reading. How does it Work: By making the students predict what they think about the facts before reading will cause them to use prior knowledge and when they start to read they will look for the answer making them pay close attention to important details. Assessment: I will collect the anticipation guide to see that they answered the after reading true/false section and make sure that they have a page number to go along with there answer. We can also discuss any changes that happened in the students anticipation guide and why they thought the way they did. Example: T/F F Fact The U.S. is at the same math level as other industrious countries Curriculum is the key to success in other countries T/F T Page # 1

Technique 6 Name of Technique: SQ3R (Survey Question Read-Recite-Review) Describe the Technique: The first step (Survey) says to just glance through the article in order to identify headings, sub-headings and other outstanding features in the text. The next step (Question) asks, "What is the article about?" students should also try and turn the headings into questions and then look for the answers in the text. The first "R" stands for Read, the students will now go through and read the article. The second "R" refers Recite, which will be the students retelling the article to themselves or a classmate. The final "R" is Review, the students will review the article and look for important details and discuss them further with classmates. Will use all these steps when reading integrating math with other subjects. Using Technique Will Help Students: Using this technique will allow to get a main idea of the article by survey, then by asking questions they will be looking for the answer. The 3 Rs will cause them to talk out the text and get a deeper knowledge of the reading. How does it Work: By making the students do all of these steps you are holding them accountable for retelling and reviewing the article with a classmate meaning that they must have read it to retell it and understand it to review it. Assessment: Assessment will be the teacher walking around and listening to the retelling and review the students are sharing with classmates and making sure they are on the right track for the important information. Example: S- I surveyed the article and it looks like we are learning how math is related to other subjects Q- How will math be related to this subject R- I have read the article R- math is related to social studies by being able to plot population graphs of a giving time and area R- math is related to almost everything

Technique 7 Name of Technique: Tea Party Describe the Technique: Students are given a card with a word on it from the reading writing for a math class. Students will walk around the classroom seeing what other peoples cards say and try and predict what the reading will be about. After they have talked to everyone the students will then read the article. Using Technique Will Help Students: Using this technique will force students to use their prior knowledge to try and predict what the article is about, it will also force them to pay attention to the reading as they will want to see where the word on their card is in the article. How does it Work: By not telling your students what the article is about and just giving them words from the article it will make them curious and want to read so they can see where the words came from. Assessment: After the students are done talking to everyone we will discuss as a class what they think the article is about and why they think this. We will also talk about the words, common ones and ones that seemed out of place. Example: Express Rote Regurgitated Journey of discovery Composition Dynamic space Context Background Curriculum Ignorance Abstract Inception History Writing Challenges

Technique 8 Name of Technique: Math Journal Describe the Technique: After reading articles in math class students will write entries in a notebook about what they got out of the reading. What they learned, how they felt, if they already knew the information and where did they learn it. Using Technique Will Help Students: This technique will allow students to openly express what they got out of reading the articles and let me as a teacher know if they are learning anything from the articles. It will allow people who are to shy in class to share their ideas How does it Work: Students will read an article and be able to write what they thought about. Since it allows them to be open they can express how they truly feel and that will allow them to remember the article even if they hated it and they can always look back at it to remind themselves. Assessment: Will randomly collect the journals to make sure students are writing meaningful entries about the article and not just writing nothing. Example: Journal entry #1: today we read an article about a man named Benoit Mandelbrot, he was a mathematician who came up with the idea of geometric fractals which are images that no matter how many times you zoom in on it the image never changes. Some examples of fractals are the Von Kock snowflake and the Mandelbrot set, but these designs can be found all over the world.
