Managers as Effective leaders: What is a Managers?

How can he be a leader? The survival of organisation in todays environment relies upon it is people to effectively serve the stakeholders that have an interest in the business. Therefore the people and the resources that provide value to the stakeholder needs to be managed ( ) Although managers job is about tasks such as organisations function, profit focus, day to day operation, sitting objectives, developing people, defining the business mission. A great manager will be focused upon achieving such goals however this is by no means that the criteria for an effective leader have been achieved. For a manager to be an effective leader he needs to look beyond implementation and following certain rules and rituals. An effective leader sets the vision for the organisation; he inspires others and leads them to fulfilment. Tom Peters (1985) advocates a simple four- part scheme for an effective manager. A taking care of customers exceptionally well B; Turned on people C; constant innovation D; great leadership. Managers as an effective leaders needs to inspire others in a democratic fashion into achieving a common goal that provides opportunity for all to work to grow and learn together. Managers as effective leaders set goals and targets for others however he or she facilitates people in achieving those goals. He directs member towards achieving tasks but he is also open to ideas and inputs from member of the team so that people feel valued for their opinion which in return this encourages creativity and make member feel that they are not just workers of the organisation but they are owners of the firm in terms of success and achievements. Managers as effective leaders should be approachable, be able to listen to others, resolve conflicts, act upon promises rather just lip service, be aware of the development needs of others and reward them for the outstanding achievements. A great example of a manager who is also one of the most influential business personalities of this decade is Jim Senegal CEO of Costco. Apart from an impressive return on equity Costco employees have the lowest turnover rate in the retail industry (businessinsider.com 2012). Among the people and workers he is known as the normal guy with an average salary among CEOs and a personality that inspires people towards a common goal, it is no wonder he is loved by those around him. Another example of a great manager as an effective leader is Sir Terry Leahy former CEO of Tesco plc. Started as a retail assistant stacking shelves and serving customers he worked his way up to become the head of a global retail business giant, he was known for being inspirational where he engaged with employees on a regular basis, according to The Economist (2002) Sir Terry emphasis on many aspects of how to be a great leader and run a business successfully, he says that After all
the greatest source of productivity, is through the engagement of people with their jobs and their company.

Leaders as effective managers There are certain qualities that good leaders must possess; the most important of all is having a vision for the organisation where it should be in the foreseeable future. Most leadership qualities is about taking organisation forward and communication to the team on how these be achieved. They must play as a role model and nurture creativity and innovation. Build great relationship with senior managers so the areas that need improvement are dealt with accordingly. There are many skills associated with great leadership however not every one of such skills are useful in organisation. For example in a fast paced environment such as the banking sector a leader may be approachable and open to ideas but he/she also need to ensure that the team are following strict rules and regulations as the cost of failure will be devastating to the survival of the organisation. This leadership is about constant engagement with the team. The leadership in this situation will have a managerial approach to the running of the business but will also have a vision for the long term in term of developing and empowering others to grow.

Evaluate the Balance between the Demand of the Management and the Demand of the leadership; So far in this article it has been demonstrated some of the key qualities of management and leadership we have acknowledged that pure form of either is not effective, for example a manager who is constantly overlooking peoples shoulder checking what task is being done and how efficient the team is performing can be very demotivating, while leaders who talk the talk but dont act will never be able to lead and motivate members in achieving organisational goals and mission. Therefore the most effective form is to have managers who possess the qualities of leadership. Where he can be tasked focused but has a vision for the future of the business, emphasis on how individual performs but be able to facilitate development and innovation, be profit focus but also be able to fulfil the needs of the stakeholders. It may be hard to find somebody who is exceptionally well at having this balance approach to management and leadership, however if necessary the two roles should be separate within the same organisation where the presence of the two will be a flexibility within. Leaders Evaluate Your Role as a Leader in contributing to the organisation vision and its communication to others.

I would like to see myself as a leader of an automative industry. In this type of organisation the teams will be aware of what the company wants to achieve, what are the objective, where the company wants to be in a certain period of time and how it wants to achieve it. I will instil a feeling of ownership to members by recognizing their achievements and celebrating success. The recognition will take in the form of financial rewards as well as a formal meeting with the individual.

I will always consult members in the matters of decision making for the organisation as I believe that people at the bottom who perform the actual work and who are constantly in touch with the clients can input valuable ideas, they can identify areas that need improving, they can identify products to be developed or sold. I will also pay attention to human resources where focus can be on the developing and retention of talents so they take the firm forward and use their knowledge, skills and competencies to the maximum in order to set standards in the business world. Regular consultation will take place with all members to assure that the organisation is capable of achieving its objectives and has the appropriate resources in place. In terms of communication the vision I will hold briefings page 28 onwars.

Leader as a Manager

Balance needed between the demand of leadership and demand of Management?

According to an article cited in Wall Street Journal (2012) by Alan Murray Leadership and management must go hand in hand. They are not the same thing. But they are necessarily linked, and complementary. Any effort to separate the two is likely to cause more problems than it solves.
