Envirosource Multimedia Biofilter Bed: MBB

In river in-situ biofilter bed for natural removal of water micropollutants, such as traces of nutrients, organics, heavy metals, etc, settling of solids and water aeration. The bed provides a water drop that serves to aerate the water and increase its dissolved oxygen (DO). On the upstream side MBB maintains a water level of up to 1m depth for recreation, aquatic life or even water treatment.

How does MBB clean river water?

A. An MBB bed of height 1.2m (max) and 1.8m wide, containing adsorbent multimedia EMM built across a stream, river, or canal. The EMM biofilters the water during low flow (usually flowing at a depth of about 0.1-0.2m or less for small streams, when it is most polluted) and adsorbs trace pollutants of organics, heavy metals and nutrients. At high flows water may overflow the bed. B. Besides removing trace organics and nutrients, the MBB also removes traces of SS, increasing water clarity. Note: MBB is for polishing, not for gross removal. C. The adsorbent media retains recalcitrant organics often found in water, such as molecules of detergents, insecticides and a myriad of other manmade chemicals, and slowly biodegrade them, rendering the water sustainable for downstream habitats. D. Polished water overflows or drops and the drop aerates the water, increasing its dissolved oxygen, DO, essential for sustaining aquatic life. E. The MBB creates a pond behind it; this gives the water retention and ponding treatment (biochemical and solar treatments). F. The ponding dilutes the concentration of pollutants.

What gives the high water clean-up capabilities of MBB biofilm system?

Oxygen profile in biofilm layers enable survival of anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic microorganisms in one system, rendering the system capable of both oxidative and reductive reactions, such as nitrification and denitrification, thus the high water polishing capabilities.

Oxygen profile in biofilm layers, giving anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic conditions in one system, enables breakdown of a large range of trace pollutants from nutrients to detergents to colouring matters.

Product specification: Body of Reinforced Concrete High Strength Reinforcement Media EMM of PP/HDPE enclosing adsorptive media.

Installation Procedure: MBB unit of 1m lengths is built offsite. Base for MBB is not included. The units containing EMM media is transported to site, where: The main contractor shall prepare the base that would hold the MBB ready to receive the MBB units. The contractor will place the units onto the prepared base. The MBB is now ready for use.

Maintenance: MBB is a passive biofilter requiring minimal maintenance if any. Built-up biofilm sloughs off and is flushed at higher flows, via the built in scouring action. Depending on water quality, should it be required, manual flushing may be carried out at about once a year.
