PRECIS Tim Usherwood is Professor and Head of the Department of General Practice, Sydney Medical School Westmead, University of Sydney, and is a clinical academic at Westmead Hospital. He has worked as a general practitioner at the community-controlled Aboriginal Medical Service Western Sydney since 1997. Professor Usherwood's research focuses on the evaluation of complex interventions to improve health outcomes in chronic disease & primary care. He has undertaken a wide variety of research projects in community settings in both Australia and the UK and has published more than 70 refereed research papers. He has also published a large number of other articles and books. He is currently a Chief Investigator on six NHMRC-funded research projects and a variety of other studies using a range of quantitative, qualitative and mixed research methods. Professor Usherwood is a member of the editorial committees of the Medical Journal of Australia, Australian Prescriber and Medicine Today. He is Chair of the Diagnostics Expert Advisory Panel of the National Prescribing Service, and is an Associate of the Menzies Centre for Health Policy. Professor Usherwood has a strong record in health professional education and management. From 2001 to 2008 he served as foundation Chairperson of WentWest Ltd, the regional general practice training provider (RTP) for western Sydney. In 2006 he led WentWest to become the first integrated RTP and division of general practice in Australia. For four years 2004-2007 he chaired the final year of the University of Sydney Medical Program. Professor Usherwood is a member of the International Advisory Board of Patan Academy of Health Sciences, Nepal. He has been a member of several Australian Medical Council accreditation teams for Australasian medical schools and colleges and has led three of these.
