MUSINGS FROM THE MINISTER MARCH 2012
Reverend Wendy Pantoja
March
A couple of weeks ago, I walked into the ofce and was greeted by the busy chatter
of congregants and staff conferring about various projects on which they were
working. There were two or three groups of two or three folks each. The chatter
was music to my earsa song of beloved community in action behind the scenes.
It was wonderful to hear about the care they were taking and the attention they were giving to detail.
And, of course, the smiles on their faces were infectious. I could feel the healthy heartbeat of our
community.
Beloved community calls us to be in right relationship with each other and with the world. Often
peoples minds go to social justice as it addresses the large issues of marginalization and oppression. Or,
they think of covenants and other agreements made within congregations or by legislators. Yes, it is all
that and more. Here is a recent example.
A few weeks ago, I was made aware of the difculties some of our members were having in moving
about our sanctuary. The side aisles were much too narrow for walkers and wheelchairs. Some of our
doors were blocked by tables and chairs that did not seem to have a home when not in use. All of this
was creating a physically unsafe and unattractive environment.
With this in mind, we have been experimenting with how to make our sanctuary safer and more
accessible. You might have noticed that we created a single center aisle and wider side aisles. By
skipping a row of chairs, we have also created a horizontal space that gives easy access to doors on both
sides of the room. Stacks of unused chairs and folded up tables are no longer giving our sanctuary a
cluttered look or hindering accessibility. An added benet is that the more serene look is inspiring some
members to think of ways to beautify our sanctuary even more as well as other spaces on our campus.
Beloved community looks at all aspects of our relationships with the purpose of making them more
loving and compassionate. If you have ideas to this end, let us hear about it. Please bring them to our
conversations, the suggestion box, and to our congregational gatherings.
En paz y fe,
Rev. Wendypaz

Barbara Woshinsky- President of the Board
Reaching for the Sun
Oddly enough for a native Northerner like myself, late February marks
the beginning of Spring in South Florida: grass turns green, orchids
bloom, weeds sprout with happy and indiscriminate abandon. For the
Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Miami, this is also a time of new growth.
After a long, introspective cocooning, our congregation is emerging and moving forward. We are
participating in programs that reach out into the community: an important Religious Education retreat
will take place on March 3, organized by Director of Religious Education Monica Rizzo, with the
participation of Rev. Wendy Pantoja and Rev. Randy Becker from the Key West UU Congregation. On
March 10, UUCM will host an immigration justice forum, organized by the Social Justice Committee
under the leadership of its co-chairs, Lidia Moore and Derrick Mustelier. This forum will feature several
local speakers, including Professor Alex Stepick of FIU. This event leads up to two larger UU meetings:
Florida District Assembly, March 23-25, under the title Crossing Boundaries, will address building
multicultural community; and the UU General Assembly or Justice GA, to be held in Phoenix June
20-24, will focus on the immense challenges of immigration. More information about attending GA is
found elsewhere in this Newsletter.
At the same time we are reaching out into the community, we must not forget, as Voltaire said, to
cultivate our own garden. The chair of the Facilities Committee, Daniel Farias, is organizing garden
parties to further beautify the labyrinth and the approach to our building. If you wish to
help, please contact Daniel. The Board and the annual budget drive chairs, Shawn
Joost and David Roelant, have created a budget of possibility to sustain us on our
path. However you are able, please contribute your time, talent and treasure to the
growing life of our congregation. In the words of District Executive Kenn Hurto, it
is time to release our generosity, as an expression of lifes abundance.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT (LDC) COMMITTEE UPDATES
The Leadership Development Committee has dual responsibilities. The rst is to identify and name
candidates to replace outgoing members of the Board ofTrustees (BOT) and identify and name
candidates to replace outgoing members of the LDC. Before the Annual Congregation Meeting
and vote in May, we need to develop slates of candidates for the Board and for the LDC.
Our second responsibility, in collaboration with the Board of Trustees, is to work within the
congregation to encourage, recruit, mentor and identify leadership candidates, and facilitate
training for leaders, as well as for other congregation members. We have made good progress in this
regard.
We have within our UUCM congregation many enthusiastic and talented members, from whom
new leaders can emerge to provide continuity, diversity and creativity within our BOT and LDC.
Will you be willing to serve? Talk with a member of LDC. Find out what the leadership
expectations are and let us know that you are willing to serve. Our Committee members include Art
Friedrich, Roxane Pickens and Maria Poviones Bishop.
Selva Joseph and Bill Turner, Co-chairs UUCM, LDC.
MUSIC IN MARCH: JAZZ SERIES RESUMES
Sunday, March 11th welcomes back the extraordinary duo of vocalist Wendy
Pedersen and piano great Jim Gasior. Wendy, an award winner named New Times
Jazz Vocalist and Jim, acting Music Dean at the New World School of the Arts,
return to our sanctuary with their take on classic jazz and American Songbook
standards. They can do it all.
On Sunday, March 25th, Ira Sullivan holds forth with an array of reed and
brass instruments and talented musician friends. Ira is a ve time Grammy
Nominee. Some of you may even remember his evocative Nadia's Theme
that was part of Nadia Comaneci's routine in the 1976 Olympics. Yes, that
was Ira's music. Both of these concerts are worth your presence. All concerts
begin at 4:00 PM, $15.00 cash at door. Student's $10.00.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT REPORT
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT REPORT February 04, 2012
The Leadership Development Team congratulates Maria Poviones Bishop on her presentation of a
dynamic and enlightening workshop on free and useful Tools that are available to all of us through
the internet. She illustrated how we can overcome the time and distance constraints we have, living
in the greater Miami area, to communicate and make decisions in our committee work. We learned
that electronic communication allows us to function eciently, reduce our carbon footprint and
saves time, gasoline, paper and human fatigue. This is also consistent with our Green Sanctuary
commitment. Contact us if you missed this meeting and we can arrange to share information and
websites with you.
Reverend Wendy pointed out that it is also important to maintain personal, face-to-face
connections with one another in a congregational environment. We all agree. BOT President
Barbara Woshinsky, presented us with best-practice guidelines for working in committees. Treasurer
David Jacobs is working on getting committee budgets on line. Oce Administrator Jessica
Brautigam gave us vital pointers on communication, deadlines and the procedure for accessing
funds budgeted to committees.
Thanks to everyone who participated in the Opportunity Fair. It was a rousing success coordinated
by our Vice President Margaret McAlister, resulting in committee discovery and many new people
signing up for committees.
We are currently looking for candidates to chair our Diversity Program that includes the
Welcoming Congregation and Abrazame (Multi Cultural Awareness). We are also looking for active
leaders for hospitality to ensure nourishing meals and snacks after services.
At a recent Stewardship workshop it was learned that Adult Programs are being requested by the
membership. We are discussing the need for a program coordinator who can organize adult
programs and adult education.
We will be considering nominees for the Board of Trustees. Elections will be held in May. If you are
interested in being considered please contact our committee.
Reverend Wendy Pantoja, President Barbara Woshinsky and Selva Joseph will be attending a
leadership Workshop in Orlando the week of February 19th. This is part of the UU initiative to
provide outstanding training to our congregational leaders.

NEW CLASS: Articulating Our Faith

You are a what?

What do we say after we declare that we are Unitarian Universalists? How do we explain a
creedless religion of diverse theologies that makes no claim to specic sacred texts?
How do we answer questions about the faith we have chosen? How to explain it to visitors,
newcomers?
I invite you to join me in a series of ve classes beginning March 11 in which we will explore various
aspects of Unitarian Universalism. Based on a curriculum entitled Articulating Your UU Faith, there
will be interactive discussions about our chosen faith and opportunities to try out some of the
elevator speeches or coffee hour chats you will develop over the duration of the course.

We will meet for ve sessions (1-3 PM):

March 11
April 8, 22
May 6, 20

In order to make sure we have enough materials for all participants, you are asked to register for
this class in advance by contacting the Rev. Wendy Pantoja at RevWendypaz@aol.com or at

THE TIME IS NOW: General Assembly
Would you like to join UU's from around the country at the General Assembly in Phoenix, AZ. in June to
witness in ways that reect our UU commitment to justice, equality, and compassion for all? Would you
like to worship, learn, and work hand in hand with community partners such as Puente, National Day
Laborers Organizing Network, Mi Familia Vota, and more? The 2012 General Assembly is specically
calling for participants of all ages. Our congregation may send up to 3 delegates, who will be selected by
the UUCM Board of Trustees to vote and represent our congregation.
This year, there is also a new option of participating electronically as an o-site delegate. Costs will be
around $1000 per person to attend, $100 for o-site delegates. (The total number of delegates is still
limited to three). More information is available on the UUA Website at www.uua.org/ga/. There will be
some nancial assistance available for delegates on a rst-come, rst serve basis. Any member can attend

Thank you Gregg and Rick
Congratulations to Gregg Moore for restoring
wi- connectivity in our sanctuary. Seems like
magic to me. Also kudos to Rick Homer for
unsolicitedly installing hand rails in the
bathroom stalls. We can all use a boost!

Gisela Haynes
Thank you Monica, RE Director
The "Intergen Friend" project was a wonderfully
organized and enjoyable project.5 pairs
exchanged 6 letters and at the end of 6 weeks
Monica had prepared a lovely table to celebrate
our new friendships with each other. I want to
thankMonica andalso my new friend Isabella
Arias who loves animals and wrote me all about
it.
Kudos Department is a column appearing periodically in the Newsletter, to celebrate unrecognized
contributions by our congregants. If you wish the congregation to show appreciation for someones
helpful deed, please send the details by e-mail to Barbara Woshinsky, or ll out a comment card and
leave it in the box at the back of the Sanctuary. Even if you are not a member of a committee, you
can still do your little bit of good. And thanks!!
Want to give back to the church community? BECOME AN USHER!
Are you friendly? Do you like talking to people? Then you have all the skills
you need to give back to our congregation by becoming an usher! Its easy. It
can be as little as one Sunday per month. We are having an informational
usher meeting March 25th after Sunday service. No obligation for coming to
the meeting and learning what it is all about. If you have already signed up to
be an usher please attend this meeting to learn more about the updated
procedures for ushering at UUCM. Contact Jeremy May for details
(jmay010@u.edu).
