Te Nelson Cycling Club Needs You
For the past six years, Nelson Cycling Club volunteers
have delivered an outstanding bicycle swap to community
members in Nelson and surrounding areas. Please help us
keep this community tradition going strong and consider
stepping up to help out.
Every spring bicycle hungry folks look forward to the
swap to buy gently used bikes at great prices for all ages and
abilities. Te swap is also an excellent opportunity to sell the
bikes and gear that you no longer use or no longer fts.
Te annual Nelson Cycling Club bike swap is the clubs
biggest fundraiser of the year. Te bike swap provides over
half of the clubs revenue, says Pat Wray, Club President.
Without the swap we wouldnt be able to support moun-
tain bike riding, trail building and insurance costs as well
as we do.
Te current bike swap volunteers have developed a
top-notch system that makes organizing the event very
straightforward. Te system is extremely ef cient. Every-
one knows what to do, and how to do it and the swap goes
of very smoothly. Many hands make light work, says
Helen Lutz, bike swap organizer. With some of our swap
volunteers moving on to other roles in the club, we need
some new folks to step forward and help keep the bike
swap going, adds fellow swap organizer Bruce Hardy.
Other than the great feeling you will get as a bike swap
volunteer, volunteers also get frst choice on all of the bikes
and gear that come into the swap. By helping out as a bike
swap organizer in the days leading up to the event, you
wont be asked to help out with any other Nelson Cycling
Club events, says Pat Wray.
Te 7th annual Nelson Cycling Club bike swap is
planned for Sunday, April 22 at the Rod and Gun Club.

Helping Boys Become Healthy Men
On Tursday, April 12 the Kootenay Boundary Com-
munity Services Co-operative is hosting the Mentors Make
a Diference conference in Nelson at the Hume Hotel. Tis
one-day conference is part of the Helping Boys Become
Healthy Men project and will highlight the 5 local pro-
jects providing mentorship opportunities for boys that are
being implemented in the Greater Trail Area, Kaslo, Nel-
son, Grand Forks and Castlegar.
We are excited to have Jim Conway, Senior Trainer for
the Search Institute as our keynote speaker who will be
speaking on the importance of mentorship in the lives of
young men. Te conference will be a great opportunity to
network and to engage in activities to design a long-term
framework for mentorship in our region. For more infor-
mation on the amazing work being done by the Search In-

We hope that representatives from communities in
the West Kootenay and Boundary will be able to attend
to not only support the work being done in these com-
munities but learn more about the other exciting projects
being piloted around the region. Our invite list is broad
and diverse. Our goal is to have regional representation of

framework for mentorship in the Kootenay Boundary.

I am a spayed 5 year old American
Lop mix with short almond
and brown fur. I was originally
purchased from a pet store with my
little mate Buttercup but had to be
surrendered to the BCSPCA after my
original owners developed allergies
to us. Since being here Buttercup
has been adopted, leaving me
awaiting my new home!
Rabbits can be really great pets! I
have been litter box trained, and
am using it really well. As I have
been spayed, I no longer have a
strong drive to spray my territory,
and I will continue to use my litter
box without problems. Once you
show me where my things are, I
can learn to roam more of a larger
area in my new home, which I
will really enjoy. Just make sure
there is nothing you dont want
chewed, since we rabbits are
prone to chewing. Ofer me safe
chewable toys and it will distract
me from your furniture and rugs.
I may also get along with your cats
that you may have now in my new
home. Well mannered dogs may be
alright with me too, as long as the
dog is gentle and slow with me. Since
I used to live with another rabbit, I
may get along with your spayed and
neutered house rabbit too. Introduce
us for short periods at frst, so that we
can get to know each other and you
can monitor our reactions.
I am a really nice girl who is looking
for a home where a house rabbit is
really wanted. Unfortunately too
many of my rabbit cousins are
adopted for Easter or birthday
gifts for kids, and once the novelty
wears of, they are either banished
to the garage where they get
little to no human afection, or
surrendered to shelters.
Just because I am a rabbit, doesnt
mean that I dont deserve the same
amount of attention as your dogs
and cats. The more you handle and
love me, the more bonded I will
become to you, my new humans,
which is rewarding for everyone.

Chicken Day Returns
Afer a successful frst year operating the areas only li-
censed poultry abattoir, owner Judi Morton is beginning the
new season with an educational event. Chicken Day will be
held on Saturday, March 10th at the Vallican Whole Com-
munity Centre. It will feature an introductory session for be-
ginners as well as sessions for experienced poultry producers
and planning for group orders of chicks and feed.
Morton is expecting a busy second season for her abattoir.
We have a great crew who take pride in our convenient and
humane service. We have updated our website with tips for
commercial producers and back-yard hobbyists alike (www.
passmorepluckers.ca). Te site also has the schedule, book-
ing instructions and prices.
Locallyraised poultry is popular and proftable. Morton
hopes her abattoir will support growth of sustainable farm-
ing in the area. Chicken that has been processed in a licenced
facility can be sold legally to a wholesaler or direct to retail-
ers, restaurants or consumers. Every bird in Mortons abattoir
is examined by a Canadian Food Inspection Agency inspect-
or. Morton says, Our CFIA inspector was really impressed
with the quality of poultry raised in this area.
Te abattoir is located in the Slocan Valley so poultry travel
less than two hours from anywhere in the West Kootenay.
Considerate treatment of the birds is important for Morton.
Short travel distances are best for the birds. Most go from
the producers farm to the customers fridge or freezer in the
same day. We help producers plan their delivery to get the
optimum value from the birds and create a safe delicious
product.
Chicken Day will be held at the Vallican Whole from 9 am
to 3 pm on Saturday, March 10. Admission by donation. For

Horse Symposium
Te West Kootenay Chapter of the Back Country Horse-
men of British Columbia is proud to present its frst annual
Educational Symposium on Saturday, March 24 at the Warf-
ield Village Community Hall.
Swing Into Spring with Horses and Courses is a one day
conference ofering four guest instructors speaking on how
diferent types of bits can afect a horses movement, hoof
care, recognizing and utilizing West Kootenay plant life for
back country camping and physically and mentally prepar-
ing the horse for back country riding.
Time Schedule:
9 am to 10:15 am Bits and Fits: What is the diference
between a snaf e bit and a bit-less bridle and which
is best for a back country ride? Local horseman Rick Fill-
more will explain why certain bits can positively and nega-
tively afect a horses natural movement while improving a
riders feel for his or her mount.
10:30 am to 12 pm Going Barefoot: Barefoot special-
ist Scott Gain will discuss various hoof ailments and the
benefts horses gain by going barefoot such as surefooted-
ness, quality of movement and stamina.
12 pm to 1 pm Lunch break.
1 pm to 2 pm Wild Edibles: Castlegar native and seasonal
gardening expert Libby Ruljancich shows us the amazing
array of wild edibles we can safely harvest from our back
country wilderness.
2 pm to 4 pm Staying Power: A Canadian Champion 50
and 100 Mile Endurance Rider, holistic veterinarian Gail
Jewell DVM will present various ways to condition your
horse for the optimal back country riding performance
and how the lifestyle of the modern horse directly efects
its mental and physical well being.
All riders and non-riders from throughout the West Koo-
tenay region and the American Inland Empire are invited to
attend. Te entry fee is $5 for West Kootenay Chapter mem-

Governor of British Columbia and Chancellor of the Order

House in Victoria later this year.
Eligibility Te Order of BC is open to any resident of
BC or former long-term resident, who has demonstrated
outstanding achievement, excellence or distinction in any
feld of endeavour benefting the people of the Province or
elsewhere. Fields include community leadership, business,
labour, industry, volunteer service, professions and other
occupations, research, culture, arts, sports and others. Fed-
eral, provincial and municipal elected representatives are
not eligible for appointment to the Order while they re-
main in of ce. A person may not be appointed to the Order
posthumously unless the Advisory Council recommends
the appointment to the Lieutenant Governor in Council
before the persons death.
