General Description
Langkasa MA-1 is light centerline thrust (CLT) ground attack & surveillance (GAS) airplane, designed for maximum stability, maneuverability and safety. It has the power of a twin engine airplane, but the agility & size of a small single engine airplane. If 1 of its 2 engines loses power, the airplane will not lose its symmetry or stability. The nose of the airplane does not contain a front landing gear and is designed in such a way for maximum space for the installation of a large ground surface optical imager or a second seat for an observer plus a cannon. Since the engines are located towards the middle of the fuselage, there are 3 large air inlets to avoid overheating of the engines. Although the power of each engine is relatively low to minimize weight and temperature build-up, the combination of them provides a relatively high power. Both engines are backward facing and each drives a backward facing propeller. To further increase the airplanes stability, maneuverability and safety through torque cancelation, both its propellers rotate at opposite directions. MA-1A carries 1 pilot and equipped with a 400mm ground surface optical imager for high power & resolution optical imaging of surface targets. Its nose can be rotated 180 degrees to enable the 180 degrees orientation of the optical imager, which can also rotate 180 degrees for downward and sideways imaging. MA-1A is also armed with an M134 Gatlin machinegun & 2 AGM114 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles. The primary role of MA-1A is ground surveillance and its secondary role is ground attack. MA-1B carries 1 pilot & 1 observer/co-pilot and armed with an M134 Gatlin machinegun, a 20mm cannon & 2 AGM114 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles. The primary role of MA-1B is ground surveillance & pilot/observer training and its secondary role is ground attack. MA-1C carries 1 pilot and armed with an M134 Gatlin machinegun, an M61 Vulcan Gatlin cannon & 2 AGM114 Hellfire air-tosurface missiles. The primary role of MA-1C is ground attack.
