Healthy Eating

Research has shown that following a healthy eating plan can both reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure and lower an already elevated blood pressure. For an overall eating plan, consider the DASH eating plan. "DASH" stands for "Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension," a clinical study that tested the effects of nutrients in food on blood pressure. Study results indicated that elevated blood pressures were reduced by an eating plan that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and lowfat dairy foods and is low in saturated fat, total fat, and cholesterol. The DASH eating plan includes whole grains, poultry, fish, and nuts and has reduced amounts of fats, red meats, sweets, and sugared beverages. A second clinical study, called "DASH-Sodium," looked at the effect of a reduced dietary sodium intake on blood pressure as people followed either the DASH eating plan or a typical American diet. Results showed that reducing dietary sodium lowered blood pressure for both the DASH eating plan and the typical American diet. The biggest blood pressurelowering benefits were for those eating the DASH eating plan at the lowest sodium level (1,500 milligrams per day). The DASH-Sodium study shows the importance of lowering sodium intake whatever your diet. But for a true winning combination, follow the DASH eating plan and lower your intake of salt and sodium. High Blood Pressure Remedies

Updated: 10/01/2011

"Blood pressure (strictly speaking: vascular pressure) refers to the force exerted by circulating blood on the walls of blood vessels, and constitutes one of the principal vital signs. The pressure of the circulating blood decreases as blood moves through arteries, arterioles, capillaries, and veins; the term blood pressure generally refers to arterial pressure, i.e., the pressure in the larger arteries, arteries being the blood vessels which take blood away from the heart. Arterial pressure is most commonly measured via a sphygmomanometer, which uses the height of a column of mercury to reflect the circulating pressure (see Non-invasive measurement). Blood pressure values are reported in either kilopascals (kPa) or in millimetres of mercury (mmHg), despite many modern vascular pressure devices no longer using mercury. [...] Typical values for a resting, healthy adult human are approximately 120 mmHg (16 kPa) systolic and 80 mmHg (11 kPa) diastolic (written as 120/80 mmHg, and spoken as "one twenty over eighty") with large individual variations. These measures of arterial pressure are not static, but undergo natural variations from one heartbeat to another and throughout the day (in a circadian rhythm); they also change in response to stress, nutritional factors, drugs, or disease. Hypertension refers to arterial pressure being abnormally high, as opposed to hypotension, when it is abnormally low. Along with body temperature, blood pressure measurements are the most commonly measured physiological parameters." TED'S REMEDIES 09/29/2007: Ted writes: "Subject: Is the Sodium Responsible for Blood Pressure or Is it the Chloride:While the problems of chlorides was known almost a century ago,

not the sodium problem, many people keep arguing to me about the sodium. Sodium bicarbonate and sodium citrate don't cause blood pressure to rise. It is the halogens, in particular is the chloride found in sodium chloride, fluoride, bromine (this one is powerful) are the ones that caused the most problem based on my own observations. Here is some recent medical literature regarding my observations:: Med Hypotheses. 2004;63(1):138-48.Links Should we restrict chloride rather than sodium? McCarty MF. Pantox Laboratories, 4622 Santa Fe St., San Diego, CA 92109, USA. mmccarty@naionline.com Low-salt diets have potential for prevention and treatment of hypertension, and may also reduce risk for stroke, left ventricular hypertrophy, osteoporosis, renal stones, asthma, cataract, gastric pathology, and possibly even senile dementia. Nonetheless, the fact that salt restriction evokes certain counter-regulatory metabolic responses-increased production of renin and angiotensin II, as well as increased sympathetic activity--that are potentially inimical to vascular health, has suggested to some observers that salt restriction might not be of unalloyed benefit, and might in fact be contraindicated in some "salt-resistant" subjects. Current epidemiology indicates that lower-salt diets tend to reduce coronary risk quite markedly in obese subjects, whereas the impact of such diets on leaner subjects (who are less likely to be salt sensitive) is equivocal--seemingly consistent with the possibility that salt restriction can exert countervailing effects on vascular health. There is considerable evidence that sodium chloride, rather than sodium per se, is responsible for the known adverse effects of dietary salt. Other non-halide sodium salts, such as sodium citrate or bicarbonate, do not raise plasma volume, increase blood pressure, boost urinary calcium loss, or promote stroke in stroke-prone rats. Nonetheless, these compounds have been shown to blunt the impact of salt restriction on renin, angiotensin II, and sympathetic activity in humans. This may rationalize limited clinical evidence that organic sodium salts can decrease blood pressure in salt-restricted hypertensives. Furthermore, organic sodium salts have an alkalinizing metabolic impact favorable to bone health. These considerations suggest that restricting dietary salt to the extent feasible, while encouraging consumption of organic sodium salts in mineral waters, soft drinks, or other nutraceuticals--preferably in conjunction with organic potassium salts and taurine--may represent a superior strategy for controlling blood pressure, promoting vascular health, and preserving bone density. Further clinical studies should determine whether a moderately salt-restricted diet supplemented with organic sodium salts has a better and more uniform impact on hypertension than salt restriction alone, while rodent studies should examine the comparative impact of these regimens on rodents prone to vascular disease. And my husband manages his blood pressure with 1000mg of magnesium a day: 500 in the am, 500 before bed. Works like a charm." 09/06/2010: Anon from Anon replies: "Hi Sally. I was wondering what type of magnesium is your husband taking. Is it citrate, chloride or something else." 02/16/2011: Bob from Raymond, Maine, Usa replies: "Hi, I have been taking ASV/Baking Soda for my gout, and it seems to be doing very well. Though I do have another problem, and that is high blood pressure 145-185/70-90 the doctor has me on Lisinopril 10mg and Hydrochlorothiazide 12. 5mg and wants to place me on a higher dose. Can you tell me what to do as I would like not to take any prescription? Thank you. [YEA] 06/21/2011: Iamaurelia from Morelia Mich, Mexico writes: "One yr ago I started having headaches and Dr. found I had high blood pressure 187/100 yikes. I was told I needed to take meds for life. I refused to believe that and have been searching for a natural cure since then. I have found it drinking fresh Aloe every morning. I take a medium leaf wash and remove thorns, put it in the blender, with one lemon and one tablespoon raw honey. Strain and drink on an empty stomach after one month I am off meds and my readings are 109/65!!!!! I also drink one cup of hibiscus tea a day and eat cayenne pepper with meals. My friend also tried this and she is a diabetic her blood sugar is now an average 80, and off insulin."

Replies 06/22/2011: Sand from Atlanta, Ga replies: "How much lemon are you using? Is it just the juice or skin and seeds and all. Also, is it 100% hibiscus tea or one of the combination tea blends like Red Zinger How long did it take to see results?" 06/27/2011: Mickey from Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh replies: "Hi, This sounds wonderful! How much aloe vera is there in a medium sized leaf? Do you add the whole lemon with seeds and skin? Do you add water to the mixture while blending? How much mixture do you get after straining? About half a cup? Sorry abt the questions :) But pls do answer when you have time."

07/04/2011: Rashidah from East Orange, Nj replies: "Please respond: DO YOU BLEND THE GREEN LEAVE OR PEEL THE LEAF AND ONLY BLEND THE GEL?" [YEA] 07/15/2011: I Am Aurelia from Morelia, Mexico replies: "hi, I blend the whole aloe leaf, whole lemon, peel and all, add about a cup of water more or less. When strained you should have a glassful of liquid. First few days I had cramps and loose stools as the outer part of the aloe leaf is a laxitive. I believe it is part of the cleansing process. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. The hibiscus is 100% hibiscus. You should be able to find it at a natural foods store or a store with ethnic products. I saw results in the second week, numbers started to go down." 07/21/2011: Carol from Newton, Nh replies: "Is it just the leaf or the aloe cream inside too?" [YEA] 08/07/2011: Lidia from San Jose, Ca replies: "Hello everyone. I tried this and it works! One glass hibuscus iced tea daily (no sugar) added. The aloe drink every morning. Thanks!" 05/14/2010: Bill from San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines replies: "The reason Citrus fruits like lemons, lime and ACV are good for the body is that ACV contains malic acid and acetic acid and citrus fruits contain mainly citric acid. When these acids reach your duodenum, which needs an alkaline to neutral medium for the duodenal enzymes to work, bicarbonates are released from the pancreas to neutralize the stomach acid or chyme. These bicarbonates are also used to neutralize the citric acids from fruits and the malic acid and acetic acid. The acids from the ACV then become their salts -actetates and malates which are highly absorbable in the intestines and they are referred to as alkaline forming. The citric acid from the fruits is converted to citrates which are also absorbed for the same reasons. The best way to alkalize is either to squeeze a lemon or lime into a glass, or use two tablespoons of ACV plus 1/4 - 1/2 tspn of baking soda because by doing this you convert the citric acid from the fruits to citrates and you also convert the malic acid and acetates in the ACV to their salts BEFORE you digest them. So you don't need to use your own digestion's bicarbonates to neutralize these acids -- thus effectively saving your body's bicarbonates which promotes even better alkalinity as well as promoting more efficient digestion and respiration for your body overall. Essentially, by using the salt form rather than the acid forms, you are saving the body bicarbonates for use in your body rather than

wasting them unecessarily in digestion. This is also the reason why Ted always advises to take Vitamin C not as Ascorbic acid but as ascorbates. Exactly the same reasoning applies here too. Ascorbic acid is actually a prooxidant, and when you add sodium bicarbonate to a solution of ascorbic acid, this then becomes an ascorbate salt of sodium -- an anti-oxidant." 05/15/2010: Mary from Regina, Saskchewan replies: "This post is to Bill. Thank you for your excellent explanation of this alkalizing method. I have several questions for you. Firstly, when you were treating your systemic yeast infection you used molasses. How could that have worked considering you would be feeding them? Did it not make you retain water and gain weight? Secondly, you used an alkalizing formula 3X per day did you not retain water from all the sodium in the baking soda? Also would you not experience some sort of electrolyte imbalance with all that (non sea salt) type of sodium? I have so many of the same problems and have been fighting for my health for about 14 yrs now. Getting a bit discouraged. would like to try exactly what you did. It really sounds like Dr. Tulio Simoncini's baking soda cure for cancer. He believes cancer is fungus and he floods the area with glucose? (anyway some type of sugar)maybe it works because they feed, and they relax then he blasts the area with a very strong dose of baking soda. Any of your comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Mary" 05/15/2010: Mary from Regina, Saskchewan replies: "Hi Bill: One more question. Why do you think so many jpoeple report weight loss here on earth clinic, with the use of ACV and water? they do not include baking soda? And one post said it (ACV and BS) made her retain water? what are your thoughts? Thanks, Mary" 05/16/2010: Bill from San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines replies: "Hi Mary...Many thanks for your questions. I'll try and answer them as best I can: Firstly, when you were treating your systemic yeast infection you used molasses. How could that have worked considering you would be feeding them? Did it not make you retain water and gain weight? This is a good question. Oddly enough, when I cured myself of candida and everything else, I lost alot of weight(over 25 lbs). When you alkalize, you effectively put your body into high working efficiency. Your immune system improves and your energy also

improves because alkalizing and bicarbonates are specifically used in human respiration and in digestion, making these body processes much more efficient. I also used VCO in my candida remedy on a daily basis because the saturated fats in VCO(as medium chain triglycerides) are not stored as fat in the body, but instead the unneeded saturated fat is simply excreted directly from the liver into the intestines. Normal vegetable oils or polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats(long chain triglycerides) are always stored in the body as fats. This is why I have a high regard for VCO, for me it is the safest and best edible oil in the world. I used molasses in order to supply my body with more minerals -- specifically magnesium and potassium during my remedy. In those early days, I was an EC newbie and didn't understand that much. If I had candida now, I probably wouldn't use molasses, but would use sea salt and fulvic acid for minerals instead and would also use borax to help kill off the candida as well. I would also use hydrogen peroxide and magnesium chloride or citrate as well which I never used before(I use them now). Secondly, you used an alkalizing formula 3X per day did you not retain water from all the sodium in the baking soda? Also would you not experience some sort of electrolyte imbalance with all that (non sea salt) type of sodium? When most people think sodium, they think it is the big, bad enemy -- salt. But sodium is not salt. I also agree with Ted, our bodies need sodium, over 80% of our body electrolytes consist of sodium. Therefore we need sodium everyday. The scare over salt is, in my own opinion, well overplayed. As long as you use natural sea salt, you should have few sodium or salt issues. You wont retain water using sodium bicarbonate as you would with table salt because they are completely different substances with different effects on the body. Sodium bicarbonate is NaHCO3 whereas salt is NaCl. Both have completely different behaviours in the body. Ordinary table salt has a pH = 5 whereas sea salt has a pH = 7.5 - 8.5 and is more alkaline which is why natural sea salt is so much better for you. Table salt is refined and so only contains NaCl, whereas a good natural sea salt will contain many minerals as well and has many more useful body electrolytes that are both necessary for the body as well as being alkaline and more balancing. Why do you think so many jpoeple report weight loss here on earth clinic, with the use of ACV and water? they do not include baking soda? And one post said it (ACV and BS) made her retain water? what are your thoughts? Acid body conditions can lead to accumulation of fats. So can pollution of the body from heavy metals. In fact, I have read that the production and storage of fats in the body is a kind of body defence against the accumulation of heavy metals, a way for the body to hide the heavy metals safely in order to protect against their bad effects on the organs and blood.

I would also rarely use ACV without using baking soda with it. If you take ACV on its own, the acetic and malic acids in the ACV will be converted to acetate and malate salts by your digestion and then will be absorbed. So this actually depletes your body stores of sodium bicarbonates. By adding sodium bicarbonate to the ACV plus water you convert the acids to their salts BEFORE you ingest them so you save your body bicarbonates, by not having to digest and convert these acids to their salts. So you alkalize you body even more this way by saving your own bicarbonates. The lady who gained weight using ACV might have had a problem with her kidneys or liver, we just don't know. Kidneys regulate minerals and water in the blood, she might have had a water retention problem. Fat and glucose metabolism is mainly handled by the liver, so there might have been a problem there too. Also we have no idea what her diet was and she was really one of the few cases on EC where ACV didn't help her condition." 05/17/2010: Mary from Regina, Saskchewan replies: "Hi Bill: thank you very much for your timley reply. I will think about this and design a program for myself. I will report back on how it works! I always look forward to reading your posts and am starting to store them in one spot! Mary" 05/24/2010: Mary from Regina, Saskchewan replies: "Hi Bill and EC: EC could you help me to locate Bill's original post on this topic, i cannot find it anywhere and have given up looking. Bill if you see this would you kindly review what you did/ would do exactly to rid a body of systemic yeast infection. i should have saved it!!!!!!!!!! thank you so much!!!! mary" EC: Hi Mary, Bill has several detailed posts in this section: http://earthclinic.com/CURES/candida.html#COCONUTOIL 05/25/2010: Bill from San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines replies: "Hi Mary...Just to help explain some things. The only thing I would perhaps change in my original anti-candida protocol now is perhaps to avoid the Blackstrap Molasses part -- because BSM contains sugar which helps to feed the candida fungus. I took BSM for the minerals -- mainly potassium and magnesium -- but there are better ways. From what I know now, I would add this to the protocol: * Borax -- The ultimate fungal killer. Take 1/8 teaspoon in a litre of water every day. Normally taken for 4 days, then 3 days off every week. 20 Mule Team Borax is fine for this. Borax also removes fluorine from the body.

* Magnesium Chloride or Magnesium Citrate supplementation -- at least 400 mg per day(split into 2 doses). Magnesium is used in over 300 enzyme reactions in your body, balances hormones, calming, acts like an antibiotic against bacteria, helps the heart, reduces calcium build-up in the tissues(thus further reducing body acidity) and also works together with the borax to improve and maintain bone health. * Hydrogen Peroxide -- Anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Used in the protocol mainly to help clear or detox the blood and lymph of debris and to give you more energy. * Natural sea salt or Fulvic acid for proper mineral balance. * Chlorella to remove heavy metal build-up in the body. * Iodine -- using Lugol's or Iodoral tablets. You can also just paint the soles of your feet with ordinary iodine tincture twice a week(I do this) -- the iodine will be absorbed through the skin. Iodine will help to remove bromine, chlorine and fluorine from the body and will also give good support to the immune system. Iodine also helps to kill the candida. * Instead of using my own tri-herbal remedy -- choose any good quality herbs of your own choice -- such as milk thistle, dandylion and burdock -- to support both your kidneys and liver -- these are the main excretory organs of the blood. Doing this will soften the candida die-off or Herxheimer effects during the protocol. With my original anti-candida protocol(when I didn't know as much as I do now), it took a whole year to defeat my candida. Ted maintains that you should be able to cure candida properly in 4 months. These additions should help you to achieve this. I take most of the above now on a daily, weekly or monthly basis as a preventative defence for my body and as immune support. I haven't had cold, flu etc for well over 3 years now -I used to catch everything under the sun when I had candida!!" 05/26/2010: Mary from Regina, Saskchewan replies: "Hi Bill: Thanks so much for summing it up so nicely. i have 2 questions for you. firstly, do you feel totally safe with the 20 mule team in your body. Secondly you did not mention the alkalizing remedy in this summation. is there a reason? is one on the list superior? Thanks always, Mary." 05/26/2010: Bill from San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines replies: "Hi Mary...No, I certainly have no fear of taking borax, I've been taking it for about 2-3 years now. Regarding taking the alkalizing remedies, these were shown as important from the original EC link(on your original post) to my original anti-candida protocol remedy. But in my last post, I was simply describing the extra protocols I would take now to

remove the candida more quickly. You will note that all the protocols listed in my last post are not in my original candida protocol. These added extras are optional, but should hasten the departure of candida from the body." 07/17/2010: Merry from Bakersfield, California replies: "Hi Bill After reading all posts available re:candida remedy, by you, I would like to have the complete portions, list of items, and recommended doses, I. E. Per day, week, etc. Just now found this website and would like to obtain your complete method of remedy for candida. You attest to it so I will try it. So if you can direct me to where I can find it posted. Thanks, Merry" 07/18/2010: Bill from San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines replies: "Hi Merry. . . Here is a link to a comment stream where, in several detailed comments, I completely describe what protocols, herbs and supplements I used to rid myself of candida. This was My Original Protocol: Old Candida Protocol When I used this old candida protocol I did not know what I know now -- 3 or 4 years later. My original remedy took a whole year to get rid of my candida, but Ted has said that you can get rid of it in for months. So here is the protocol I would use now: To Improve your Body Terrain *Take Ted's Lime/Lemon alkalizing remedies at least 2-3 times a day as recommended. These alkalizing remedies create the worst possible environment for the candida while simultaneously creating a healthy and oxygenated body terrain. Also take the BS with water remedy on it's own one hour before bed - this will help you get a good nights sleep. If you have problems with this, then use Ted's Carbicarb remedy -- this is more balanced and incorporates potassium to balance any sodium issues. Potassium citrate can be taken to more directly aid intracellular alkalization. See this link and read Ted's description. *Take at least 2 tablespoons of Virgin Coconut Oil(VCO) per day to help constipation and intestinal issues. VCO contains mainly medium chain saturated acids, very protective for the intestines, liver and blood. Contains lauric acid, capric acid, caprylic acid and myristic acid -- these act as anti-microbials helping to destroy the candida as well as protecting theintestines from any further external microbial invasion. See this link. I don't use vegetable oils anymore, I cook only with VCO now. *Take herb supplements like Milk Thistle or Dandylion because the candida die-off(Herx reaction) will create a big strain on both your immune system and the liver which will have to clear the dead candida debris and toxins from your blood -- so you must protect and strengthen your liver during the protocol. Think of this simply as taking out the candida trash. This die-off will give you flu-like or liverish symptoms and perhaps some diarrhea. Accept this and work your way through it as it should disappear once your body gains overall control again.

*Detox and get rid of heavy metals from your body. Due to diet and if you've taken medicinal drugs for any length of time you will have an accumulation of heavy metals. This is a direct cause of acidity and therefore a direct cause of candida. To get rid of the heavy metals just drink green tea 2 or 3 times a day and eat Cilantro 3 times a week in salads. You can also use Sodium Thiosulphate (bought cheaply at any aquatics shop) to get rid of heavy metals, arsenic, cyanide and chlorine. These will get rid of heavy metals over time and the dosage is 6 dros a day in a glass of water. Heavy metals create an ideal acidic environment for candida as well as for many other auto-immune and immune-deficient illnesses such as arthritis and cancer. Se this link for more details on ST. Remedies that Directly Attack the Candida *Drink 1/8 teaspoon of borax in a litre of water throughout the day. Take this for 4 days on then rest for 3 days. So, 4 days on, 3 days off with the Borax. Borax is the ultimate antifungal, also good for bones and helps to balance the hormones as well as leeches out the fluoride from your body. Borax ups and helps rebalance your hormones, which is why you must rest for 3 days -- to avoid gland over-stimulation. Read about Borax here. *Methylene Blue(MB). You can buy this at any aquatics or fish supply store. Used to get rid of fungal and bacterial infections on fish. Also used throughout the last century as a successful anti-malarial. Taking MB on its own will turn your urine green and the whites of your eyes blue, but if you take at least 1000 mgs Vitamin C with the MB, these side-effects will not occur. Dosage: Two drops of a 0. 1% solution of MB in a full glass of water once or twice a day. Do not take MB after 3 or 4 o'clock in the afternoon - it gives you alot of energy so you will not be able to sleep! ! (I learned this the hard way. . . LOL) MB is a deep acting anti-fungal that is able to penetrate the blood/brain and blood/bone barriers of the body. MB is also a marvellous mitochondrial super anti-oxidant for your brain -- gives you lots of energy. Read about MB here. * Supplementing with at least 12. 5 mgs of 5% lugols iodine per day -- two drops a day in a glass of water(you can use more). Read about proper dosages of iodine from the Iodine Project Research(most current research) which are over 100 times the RDA recommended daily dose of 0. 125 mgs. Iodine will also help to balance your hormones and is also able to remove dangerous halogens like fluorine and bromine from your body. Iodine is, historically also a very effective candida killer. *Hydrogen peroxide(food grade) -- I just use a capful of 3% HP in one litre of water a day when I need it. Sometimes I splash 3% HP all over my body, this kills everything bad topically as well as being absorbed quite well transdermally into my body by this method. Very potent against all forms of bacteria, viruses and fungus. See this link for more on HP. Additional and Useful Vitamin and Mineral Supplements * Vitamin C -- Taken in the more alkaline form of Sodium Ascorbate -- at least 1000 mgs twice a day. Vit C is an anti-oxidant and also chelates heavy metals as well.

* Magnesium -- Taken as Mag Chloride, Mag Citrate or Mag Gluconate. Dosage: 250 mgs twice a day. Magnesium is involved in over 300 major enzyme body processes and also gets rid of any staph or strep bacteria quite well. Magnesium Chloride is the best form of magnesium in my opinion. See this link. * Natural Sea Salt or Fulvic/Humic Acid -- Both of these will act in the same way as absorbtion synergists as well as help create a healthy intestine and help to supply other much needed minerals to your body. Diet Avoid the following -- all sugar and sugar foods, dairy, all polyunsaturated vegetable oils, aspartame, sucralose, saccharine, MSG, soft drinks, junk foods, fried foods, baked goods containing white flour, red meat and atibiotics. Use coconut oil to cook everything with and use only Stevia as a sweetener. Your diet should contain low amounts of white meat like chicken, turkey and fish with high amounts of vegetables. Rice is OK. There are other methods of helping to get rid of candida, but I've taken a blanket approach -- I always assume, from my own experience with candida, that other problems caused by other resident bacteria, viruses etc will arise because of the candida and these also need to be addressed at the same time and so this are incorporated into the above protocol. Ted from Bangkok will have many more remedies up his sleeve that will certainly work -such as BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) and Azoxystrobin (agri fungicide), but these substances are hard to obtain and I've never used them so I can't really comment. But I have used(and still using) all the above recommended remedies now and I haven't been ill -- no colds, flu or any other problem -- for well over 3 years since I cured myself of candida and I'm over 60 y o now. I've tried to keep the candida remedy relatively simple yet potent. See this link for more descriptions from Ted on Candida. Lastly, I notice and read alot about people with systemic candida who, when recommended a multi-protocol, tend to simply cherry-pick only parts of the protocol that are just easy and convenient. In my own opinion, candida is a horrible, insidious and pernicious disease that is hard to cure. Candida is far cleverer than viruses, bacteria etc, because it is so robust and tough, can adapt swiftly when under attack, and can hide in your body for years and then suddenly reappear when you least expect it like a cancer -- particularly Systemic Candida. My point here is that there is no simple, convenient and easy one-shot "magic bullet" cureall pill for systemic candida because candida is not a trivial condition. It takes alot of effort to get rid if it, so you will have to adopt an attitude that is every bit as aggressive and dedicated as the candida inside you to succeed. "" 01/09/2011: Bill from Mattoon, Il replies: "Bill, Will your listed protocol work for fibromyalgia? Or do you have any other suggestions? Thank you, Bill M." 01/10/2011: Bill from San Fernando, Luzon, Philippines replies: "Hi Bill... Although I would completely agree with what Jason Uttley says in EC about fluoride causing Fibromyalgia (see http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/fibromyalgia.html), I would have to say that this is only one of the things which would could cause this illness. My reasoning

goes like this. The introduction of fluorine into our diets via water, food and drugs etc only started to happen in the 1950s. But Fibromylagia -- or Muscular Rheumatism as it was known in the old days -- was also known to exist well before fluorine was introduced into drinking water, vaccines, food and drugs in the 1950s. Therefore, there must be more than one causative factor for Fibromyalgia. As far as I can determine, the following seem to relate as causative factors of Fibromyalgia: * Fluorine in the drinking water, vaccines, drugs, agriculture and food supply. * Excess calcium in the western diets. This promotes intracellular acidity and mitochondrial calcification -- causes muscular pain. * Similarly, low amounts of Magnesium in the western diet also fascilitates excess calcium and acidity in the body with attending mitochondrial pain and energy problems. * Acidity in the body weakens the immune system and leaves the back door open to pathogens entering the body as Ted from Bangkok suggests. Therefore mycoplasmas -fungus like pathogens -- or other pathogens could also encourage Fibromyalgic symptoms. * There is some conclusive evidence that heavy metals like mercury from vaccines also might contribute to fibromyalgia. So what I am saying is that I agree that there is indeed a good chance that Fluoride is a major cause of Fibromyalgia, but I do not think that it is the only cause. So the best remedy for Fibromyalgia would be a combined remedy, consisting of: * Take large dose Lugol's iodine(12. 5 mgs/day at a minimum) to remove the fluoride from the body. * Take 1/8 tsp of borax(20 Mule Team borax is OK to use here) in a liter of water a day for 3 days a week. This will remove fluorine, kill various pathogens in your body, and helps to balance your hormones. * Initially, take 800 - 1200 mgs of Magnesium Chloride or Mag Citrate or Mag Gluconate in split doses for about 3 days(or for longer if you can) and then reduce intake to about 500 mgs per day. This helps to restore your calcium balance, removes intracellular acidity and helps to eliminate both mitochondrial calcification and muscular pain. * Alkalize the blood with 1/2 tspn Baking Soda(Sodium Bicarbonate) twice a day. * Take 6 - 10 drops of 1% Hydrogen Peroxide I n a glass of water per day. This helps to kill the mycoplasmas that could be causing the Fibro. * Eat cilantro in salads 3 times a week and drink green tea. This should help to remove heavy metals from your body.

* Use 0. 1% Methylene Blue. Dosage is 4 - 6 drops in a glass of water with dissolved ascorbic acid(1000 mgs) as Ascorbate twice a day. This is a mitochondrial superantioxidant that helps to revive the cell mitochondria to give you more energy. Follow a candida diet -- see this link: For more remedies and explanations see Ted's Fibro Remedies this link: http://www.earthclinic.com/CURES/fibromyalgia_remedies_questions.html#Question_221 9 There best diet to follow in my opinion, is the anti-candida diet which is here: Diet Here is the anti-candida diet: 1. Absolutely NO SUGAR. No ifs or buts here -- if you really want to get rid of candida -it starts here, this is a must!! 2. No junk food allowed. 3. No vegetable oil in the diet. Vegetable oil oxidizes fairly quickly on the shelf and very rapidly at high heat. Most vegetable oils are also now made from an unnatural chemical process. Better to use virgin coconut oil for cooking -- this is a very stable oil that is very good for you. When I had candida and started taking coconut oil, my bad constipation and bloating issues disappeared in about two weeks. VCO is very healthy for your body and intestines. I only cook with VCO now and VCO has actually helped me to lose weight. 4. No soda pop. Apart from the sugar, soda drinks also contain carbonic and phosophoric acids -- all of which acidifies your body and encourages candida. 5. No Sweeteners allowed -- no aspartame, sucralose or saccharine. 6. Eat only white meat like chicken or fish in small amounts and avoid all red meats. 7. No baking products like bread, cakes pastries etc. In the 60s or 70s the FDA, in their wisdom, allowed the use of bromide and bromates in bread-making and baking instead of iodine. Bromine weakens the immune system and also encourages candida growth. Strangely but happily, I recently learnt that bromides and bromates used in baking have always been banned in the Philipines. Well go figure... 8. Include using a handful of chopped coriander leaf in a salad three times a week. Ted has said that doing this for a month will remove most heavy metals successfully from your body.

9. No canned products in the diet. Bisphenol A -- or BPA -- is contained in all plastic linings of canned products and is very bad for you. Upsets hormone balance and weakens the immune system. 10. No Calcium which means no dairy products -- no milk, cheese, yoghurt etc. Avoid calcium fortified foods. Excess calcium encourages acidity and thereby aids the spread of candida. 11. No Monosodium Glutamate(MSG) allowed. This means that all soy products made from a chemical process -- including soy sauce, tofu etc. Are not allowed. Avoid all products with added MSG. But any soy products made from the natural fermentation process are OK and allowed in small amounts. 12. Avoid distilled water and tap-water. Distilled water is "dead water" -- it completely lacks any important body minerals that natural spring-water contains. Tap-water nowadays -- due to water shortages -- is now re-cycled and chemically processed from sewage(especially in cities), so Lord only knows what evil goodies tap-water contains. Enough said I think. Drink fresh mineral or spring water or create your own mineral water instead. 12. Try and avoid all (chemically) processed food if you can. Try and eat foods that are made from natural processes without excess heating or use of chemicals/pesticides. 14. When you eat food, don't always rush and over-stuff yourself, as this leads to poor, inefficient digestion and acid intestines. There is always a lag from when you feel hungry to when you are satisfied but if you eat too fast, this is not good for you. Eat your food slower and drink plenty of water at mealtimes for proper digestion. The Chinese -- and Okinawans -- normally eat until they feel 70-80% full, then they stop. This is also good simple dietary practice."

[WORKED TEMPORARILY] 09/09/2011: Matt from Bangor, Maine writes: "I too have been diagnosed with hypertension. Not so much do to my weight but a horrible inherited disease passed from my dad. Apple cider vinager is very tasty, and it has a blood thinning effect wich allows blood to flow more fluid through out the body. I make my own salad dressing using apple cider vinager and everyday I drench my saled with it and dont waste a drop. I would like to say that it is a great way to help high blood pressure. I am also currently on 2 bp medications. Before the meds and vinager I was averaging 146/96 or higher. Now my average low is 116/68. But these past two days it has been elevated for some reason. So I guess im torn on the effects of apple cider vinager. But at least it tastes good!!!"

Many posts say Apple Cider Vinegar worked for them but give little in terms of detail. I'd like to hear from people who had good results with information about what the bp numbers were prior to starting Apple Cider Vinegar and actual numbers after taking acv. I'd like to know how long it took to see a redcution in bp and if it remains low. Do you have to continue with Apple Cider Vinegar at the same frequency and dose after you reached your target bp? I have been recording my own

lack of progress at tomsriverproject.com and would look forward to your comments here. Thanks." Replies [YEA] 03/17/2011: Margaret from Knoxville, Tn replies: "I have been taking one to two tablespoons of organic ACV with one to two teaspoons of good local honey with a couple of ounces of warm water first thing in the morning for over two years. I take it for a number of reasons. I did not have true blood pressure issues prior to starting - usually running about 110/70 sometimes up to 120/70. However, after about six months on the ACV, it is consistently 100/60. I actually started on the ACV for rheumatoid arthritis pain because I am not interested in prescription drugs. The ACV with honey and water controls the RA pain. You will have to keep taking the ACV to keep your blood pressure down. If you stop, it will begin to creep back up. However, the ACV has so many wonderful effects in the body, I can't see any reason to stop. I would say, however, that everyones should be sure to "swish and swallow" with clean water following the ACV because it can be really hard on the tooth enamel otherwise."

Take 5,000 IU per day. Low Vitamin D affects almost every aspect of body functioning and can cause blood pressure to go up. Many doctors feel that a blood level of 30 ng/ml is sufficient, but newer research indicates that it should be above 50 ng/ml for optimal health. Make sure it's D3 (cholecalciferol), not D2." [YEA] 03/22/2011: Shinygirl from Charlotte, Nc replies: "Even I have been taking ACV regularly, but my BP keeps on fluctuating and has always been consistently in pre hypertension range, with maximum times being in hypertension range with readings like 138/92 or 144/96. Thanks" [SIDE EFFECTS] 05/06/2011: Umm from Madina, Saudi Arabia replies: "I take ACV sometimes just for the health benefits. I do not have high blood pressure. I notice I feel very tired sometimes and dont know what it is. I was tested for diabetes but it came out negative. Anyway, 2 weeks ago, I was too lazy to measure out 1-2 TBS of the ACV to be drank with apple juice, so I just poured it in the juice and gulped it down. It must be up to 3-5TBS. 2 days later, I went to the doctors to get my monthly prescription of iron capsules as I was diagnosed with anaemia. It turned ut my BP was low. And this explained why I used to be tired. SO, I'm assuming the "overdose" of ACV I take sometimes is the culprit. I was told to eat more salt and lie down with a pillow under my feet for a short time everyday, for the blood to be able to flow to my head. The tiredness has reduced greatly. But I have stopped taking ACV except for topical use on my hair and my skin." 05/06/2011: Diamond from Salisbury, Ma.usa replies: "I would think that it be mentioned that any one with low blood.......... Or anemic or even having lack of iron should be very careful of taking ACV very small dosages or none at all. Also I found that 90% of iron pills have isopropyl alcohol in them which will thin the blood, so read all ingredients(labels)before mixing other items, or even considering taking them. We are our own advocates, our safety and wellness is up to us. I read things then go on to other messages as they may have additional information we all need, or just fits your needs. [YEA] 07/14/2010: Scott H. from Pacific Grove, CA, USA writes: "I am a 36 year old male and I have been taking raw, organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar for two years. I started taking it with distilled water and honey. But after a few of my ACV friends reported to me how they take it, I was converted. Here is how I have been taking my daily dose of ACV. I take a regular 2 ounce shotglass and I fill it to the brim with ACV. I pour that into an empty 16 ounce drinking glass. Or use whatever size drinking glass you like. Then, I take some apple juice and pour it in on top of the ACV and fill it to the brim. Then I drink it over the course of about ten to thirty minutes. I am 6'4" 300 pounds. I was 380 when I started drinking ACV and my blood pressure medication has been cut in half and still dropping. For my wife and smaller friends I tell them a half of a shot glass. If I don't have apple juice, I use cranberry juice, grape juice or even coolaid. I do not use any acidic juices such as orange or lemonaid because it gives me heartburn when used with ACV. Hope this helps, I sure notice a big surge in power when I take this stuff this way, mentally and physically. Thanks for reading. Scott Harriger"

It is made by Whitehouse and

says "natural" on the front. The bottom was full of a dark substance, and when I shook it, there were bits floating around in it, and it looked cloudy. Does this mean it's organic? It does not say "mother" or "organic" anywhere. Please let me know. Thanks a lot!" 04/22/2010: Deirdre from Atlanta, Ga, Usa replies: "Hi Sazie, I have seen the Whitehouse brand of apple cider vinegar sold at most grocery stores. It appears to be about the same as Heinz re quality. Quite inexpensive. If you try it, be sure to compare it with an organic brand that you'd find a health food store. Oh, and be careful to start slowly with acv as it can cause bad heartburn, depending on the brand you use. Let us know how it works out!" 04/27/2010: Jenny from Ojai, Ca replies: "It is best to use a organic apple cider vinegar to get all the natural benefits of the product. One made by conventional companies found in a regular grocery store will be filtered and processed and thus has all the good "stuff" removed from it. Go with one bought at a health food store. The reason it is cloudy and there is stuff at the bottom is because it has not been filtered or processed. Just make sure you shake the bottle first before using the vinegar. The results are amazing." 05/09/2010: Sazie from Birmingham, Alabama, Usa replies: "Thanks for your replies. Jenny, the thing is the Whitehouse IS cloudy and has stuff at the bottom. That's what I don't understand because that's the way you describe the organic!!" 05/13/2010: Sazie from Birmingham, Alabama, Usa replies: "Hey, maybe the Whitehouse I had was old. I bought an organic "mother" acv, and it's just cloudy, no pieces in it, nothing but cloudy. Is this the way it should look?" 05/14/2010: Alfred from Bangkok, Thailand replies: "Raw Organic ACV.. it depends what part of the barrel it comes out of.. Some of it is cloudy with nothing floating and others have a lot of crud in it. What the "Mother" is.. Is the crud that is left over after they make it. Someone gave it a fancy name, so the customer would not complain that there was dirt floating around in the ACV.. Its all good for you.. Alfred" 05/14/2010: Sazie from Birmingham, Alabama, Usa replies: "Thanks Alfred! I did notice, after it had been sitting awhile, that there was some residue on the bottom. It also said to refrigerate, and I haven't noticed that mentioned on here." [QUESTION] 08/12/2011: Elaine from Edmond, Ok replies: "I was told an inexpensive way to make organic ACV is to buy a gallon of the super market distilled stuff and add a tablespoon of organic ACV and let it stand for two weeks. As someone who has had essential hypertension for many years (160mm/100mm, unmedicated and 130/90 with three medicines - angiotensin blocker, Ca channel blocker, and beta blocker), I have been on the quest for drug free cure. I am 47, in good health, work out every day (ran a marathon last year), and watch what I eat carefully. The doctors have not been able to ID what is the cause of my rampant high BP. I have begun the ACV protocol and I am noticing substantial improvement over the

last few weeks. But more importantly, several studies have been done in Japan (medically accepted double blind studies). Please note that in Japan, vinegar is a part of the food (sushi has vinegar/rice). Here is one such study. The key is to look for impact of acetic acid on hypertension. Acetic acid is the primary component ACV. Acetic acid has a substantial and sustained impact on high BP AFTER SEVERAL WEEKS. I have quoted one study here. There are many more. No wonder there is not a whisper about these studies in the medical circles here - the drug companies cannot make a buck on this. There are may causes of hypertension, I suspect that ACV affects only a few of the pathways, hence the variation in results. http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=18069221 BTW, it would appear that acetic acid is used to reduce tumors on the adrenal gland (functional adrenal adenoma) by injecting acetic acid directly into the tumor using Computed Tomography. This fixes a condition called aldersteroma (?) which lowers BP for people who have essential (cause unknown) hypertension. Life is Good. Regards Murali" 04/07/2010: Diane from Windhoek, Namibia replies: "Hi, thanks for the great post. What protocol are you following? How much, how many times a day, straight or diluted in water?" 05/13/2010: Pat from Hunlock Creek, Pa replies: "To Dee- my husband has sleep apnea, but his bp was always higher in the morning, you might want to check that out I hope this helps" 06/05/2010: Sabita from Port Of Spain, Trinidad replies: "hi i just read your post, my mom had the same experience, it was however a growth on her adrenal gland, diagnosis through a blood test, these tests are not routine, however my doctor was researching possible causes of high bp and decided to do the test ,it was positive...hope this helps ...god bless" [WARNING!] 12/10/2010: Grayfox88 from Colorado Springs, Colorado replies: "Stop using splenda! [NAY] 03/13/2010: Dennis from Port St. Lucie, Fl writes: "Blog Readers I must say that I am very disappointed in saying "No" to the ACV treatment for high blood pressure. The information was first given to me by my son, who has has seen a dramatic reduction of his HBP with the ACV with mother treatment. I have studied all the N/Yay's blogs on the subject hoping that it can prove to be a success for me. This is my giving conditions. HBP 140/90; before meds of 10mg amlodipine, 10 mg Bystolic. (note the current meds reduces HBP (130/80)) I started with the regular store bought vinegar which did no show any results. I then consulted with my son and began usint the ACV mother. It appeared that within the first two weeks of use after re-cleansing or detoxing from my meds that I was feeling

fine. Thus my confidence level was rising. I continued using the ACV and then bought larger 32fl oz bottle. I have learned over time experimenting with different meds, and having done two colonoscopies to determine my gastroencyphlytic(esophageal) spasms to modify and manage my food intake. I say this to give background knowledge on the significance of proper diet and my awareness of food intake, which aids any ailments of the body. Knowing this I was able to regulate my diet very well with the ACV; however when I bought the second 32fl oz with mother I began experiencing headaches, which is also a symptom of rising blood pressure. The headaches had started to increase at higher frequencies and lasting much longer. It was becoming unbearable, I took my BP with my home equipment and my HBP 150/94. I started to panic and was getting anxiety attacks. Luckily my wife always store the whole cranberries in the freezer to boil and make cranberry tea to minimize and relax the anxiety attacks. I immediately started to retake my meds. It appeared that the headaches were not going away so I had an emergency visit with my family care physician. MY blood pressure was high HBP 152/96. I got back on my meds and in two months have a follow up visit. Although the ACV did not work for me I, would suggest that the readers of this blog follow up and monitor their condition should they notice a change. Secondly I hope my message will encourage new readers that would like to try ACV to take good notes, understand their symptoms of HBP realizing that ACV may not bring the positive results they are searching for. Sincerely Dennis" Replies 03/20/2010: Naturalone from Stillwater, Mn, Usa replies: "Hi Dennis, I just wanted to comment on your post. You mentioned that at first, the ACV appeared to be helping, but then quickly took a turn for the worse. When you mentioned esophageal reflux and anxiety, I immediately thought Magnesium. In addition to the hypertension, both of these conditions can be directly related to low Mg. levels. Not to mention that your medications also contribute to Mg. wasting. I'm not suggesting that you ditch your meds, but I would highly recommend that you consider adding Mg. into your daily routine. With blessings of health & happpiness, Lyne" [YEA] 10/30/2010: Christina from County Kerry, Ireland replies: "Hi , I was just following up on your idea about Magnesium , and high blood pressure, as my HBP has rocket ted in the last few months. I had changed my diet, cutting out alot of different foods (I went Paelo) to see what might be triggering my multiple inflammation problems. So I thought I would do a search on Magnesium rich foods, which turned out to be most of what foods I had cut out, such as beans and soy

products! Within 24 hours my blood pressure had come down, just adding 1/4 teaspoon of Epsom salts to the cider vinegar bicarb mix, which I try to have three times a day. Also it has cured the constipation that has also been a problem recently. I have been trying to keep protein down to a minimum and it is very interesting how little you really need. Christina"

Replies 06/22/2010: Stephen from Edmonton, Alberta Canada replies: "First I would like to say that I strongly believe in ACV as a home remedy for many ailments/ conditions including high blood pressure. I am even building a website about it and am currently working on a page dealing with high blood pressure. What I would like to add to this string is that 1 or 2 tests will not confirm or deny that it is working. Your BP will change up or down many times during the day. It is not a constant. Apple Cider Vinegar will help high blood pressure but you need to take it daily for at least 3 weeks. Results over several tests should be done before you can confidently say that it has helped. Also, and this may be the cause of many "nay" votes, vinegar WILL NOT AFFECT high blood pressure caused by heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or other complex diseases. Most importantly, if you are currently on prescribed medication, do not stop or reduce your medication because you decide to try vinegar. See your doctor first. (S)he may decide to reduce your medication while you are taking ACV but that is a medical call and not one to be made without the proper knowledge."

I read about the organic apple cider vinegar with mother being able to control HBP. I have some that was in the cabinet for salad dressing

I took 2 more TBSP just before bedtime and slept better than I have in months. When I woke I took the BP and it was 119/70!! I'm a true believer and am on the ACV program for good. BP has been in the 120s/70s all day today too. Thank You Earth Clinic for all the valuable info." Usually some "mother" will show in the bottom of the ACV bottle the more it ages. It never needs refrigeration. You can also save some "mother" and transfer it to work in other natural vinegars. When you smell natural ACV, there's a pungent odor and sometimes it's so ripened it puckers your mouth and smarts your eyes. [YEA] 02/20/2010: Teresa from Galax, Va replies: "Hi! Thanks for your responses to my question, I went to a Whole Foods market yesterday and bought a bottle of ACV with Mothers and WOW! That is a pungent smell, bout knocked me on the ground!!! lol I took 1 TB straight and chased it with OJ and then water. Boy that stuff is STRONG. I took my BP 2 hours later and was soooo happy, it was 123/75, I was elated! It is usually in the 140/85 range. I eat very healthy and workout every week so I have been so bumfuzzled as to why it stays in the 140 range. Anyway I am so thankful I found this website!!! Thanks!!"

I stumbled upon this site in hopes for a natural remedy to lower my numbers. I was giving the raw, unfiltered ACV to my pets (just a bit in their water) and I had never tried it myself. For days 1 & 2 I used 2 tbsp. 3 times a day diluted in 10 ounces of water, then went to 2 tsp. 3 times a day. All I have to say is that the results for me were amazing. After 4 days of taking ACV, my numbers are already lower. I just took my BP this morning and it was 110/63, and this is the average since I've been taking ACV. My fiance and I work in the medical industry and have a very expensive, trusted digital BP cuff we use here at home, so I am not worried about these results not being accurate."

I was told in 2007 my BP was Pre-Hypertension 151/114. I was not put on medication right away. I asked to attempt to reduce on my own. Because I was unsuccessful, I was put on 5mg of Lisinopril. I developed symptoms, coughing, limbs going numb, low BP. also, this med was not successful in maintaining my BP. My BP has been averaging from 139/110-132/98. After reading others testimonies, on 1/7/2010, I purchased the mother ACV. That evening I mixed 1 tablespoon of ACV, 1 tablespoon of honey in 8 ounce of water. On Friday 1/8/2010 repeated the process 3x during the day. As of 1/9/2010, I cuffed as soon as I woke up BP registered 120/85. After rising and handling several task I cuffed again BP 98/76. I DID NOT BELIEVE IT SO I CUFFED AGAIN. My BP was 106/81. YES, IT WORKS! Thanks for your site and all the responses." [YEA] 01/08/2010: Barry from Shawnigan Lake Bc, Canada writes: "Dear Earth Clinic, thank you so much for posting so many positive comments regarding Apple Cider Vinegar! I recently had my first bout with Gout, and ACV scored an impressive knockout! I had been taking a diuretic for high blood pressure and in my initial research I learned that my medication could be contributing to my gout. It was new years eve and I couldn't get out to see my doctor until the following monday (4 days later) I found your website and learned about ACV. I knew we had some as my wife had asked me to purchase some for home made salad dressings. It wasn't organic with "mother" but rather a typical commercial brand "pure" ACV. Beggars can't be choosers and with nothing to lose, I decided to give it a try. I followed the instructions on your website and began to take 2 tbsp with water, tomato juice, etc. Within 12 hours the swelling crested and within 36 hours I was about 80% better. I was completely cured within 5 days. My Doctor confirmed that my medication could contribute to gout and was very impressed with ACV as a remedy. I decided to read up a little more about the benefits of ACV for my high blood pressure. Well, it's been 9 days now and with my doctors blessing, I've weaned myself off my medication. I've purchased an organic brand with the "mother" (available at most specialty grocery and health food stores) and I'm happy to report that my blood pressure is steady in the 122/80 range and is lower now that when I was on the medication

(135/88). Thanks again! Like the oldtimers, I've started to take it straight up (with an apple juice chaser) I have more energy and am continuing my daily routine of 1/2 shot glass 2-3 times a day as I attempt to shed 40 lbs over the next 6 months. It's the miracle I've been looking for and I'm telling the world! Cheers!" Replies 01/11/2010: Barry from Shawnigan Lake Bc, Canada replies: "Hello Phoenix, I've been using the organic ACV with mother for the last week now. Prior to that I was using store brand pure apple cider vinegar, and not distilled pure vinegar. My first 2 gout treatments were 2tbsp store brand acv, 1 tbsp honey and 1 cup warm water. Then I moved on to canned vegetable cocktail (I referred to this as tomato juice) 8oz with 2 tbsp heinz acv. I used this combination for approx 4 treatments. Feeling much better and with improved mobility, I went out on Jan 2 and purchased organic acv with mother. At this point I moved onto approx 1/2 shot glass (2 tbsp) acv with 2 oz apple juice chaser and have continued this treatment 2-3 times daily for maintaining my newly lower BP. I am approx 40 lbs overweight with most of the weight around my belly. I find the acv helps with my digestion and curbs my appetite. I'm excited about this new discovery and all the side benefits. I don't have sweet cravings, I've just been a little undisciplined about serving sizes and the weight has slowly built up over the last 10-15 years. My wife is a gourmet cook and she's vowed to cut back on the salt in preparing our meals and I've vowed to reduce my portions and eliminate fast food, soda and prepared desserts. Thanks for the encouragement. Barry"

What is High Blood Pressure?

Also known as: Hypertension According to the American Heart Association, nearly one in three adults in the United States has high blood pressure. But nearly one-third of those people don't know they have high blood pressure, because it's a silent disease. People can have high blood pressure for years without experiencing symptoms or knowing they have it. The upper or first number in a blood pressure reading is the systolic pressure and the lower or second number is called the diastolic pressure. According to National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute guidelines:

Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg. Prehypertension is systolic pressure that's between 120 to 139 or diastolic pressure between 80 and 89. Stage 1 hypertension is systolic pressure between 140 to 159 or diastolic pressure between 90 and 99. Stage 2 hypertension is systolic pressure higher than 160 or diastolic pressure of 100 or higher.

High Blood Pressure Symptoms

High blood pressure usually doesn't cause any symptoms in the early stages. Symptoms associated with high blood pressure can include:

Dizziness or dizzy spells Headache Nosebleeds

Causes of High Blood Pressure

In most cases of high blood pressure, the American Heart Association says there is no one identifiable cause. This kind of high blood pressure is called primary hypertension or essential hypertension. It is usually a combination of factors, such as:

Weight. The greater your body mass, the more pressure there is on your artery walls. That's because more blood is produced to supply oxygen and nutrients to tissues in your body. Activity level. Lack of physical activity tends to increase heart rate, which forces your heart to work harder with each contraction. Tobacco use. Chemicals in cigarettes and tobacco can damage artery walls. Sodium intake. Excessive sodium in the diet can result in fluid retention and high blood pressure, especially in people sensitive to sodium. Potassium intake. Low potassium can result in elevated sodium in cells, because the two balance one another. Stress. Stress can raise blood pressure. Alcohol consumption. Excessive alcohol intake can, over time, increase the risk of heart disease. Age. The risk of high blood pressure increases as you get older. Family history. High blood pressure often runs in families.

High blood pressure can also be caused by an underlying condition, such as kidney disease, hormonal disorders, thyroid disease, adrenal gland disease, and the use of certain drugs, such as oral contraceptives, or herbs such as licorice. This type of high blood pressure is called secondary hypertension.

Natural Remedies for High Blood Pressure

Lifestyle changes and natural remedies may help to control high blood pressure, but your doctor may also recommend medication to lower high blood pressure. It is important to work with your doctor, because untreated high blood pressure may damage organs in the body and increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, brain hemorrhage, kidney disease, and vision loss. See a drawing of a hypertensive heart.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

There is some evidence that the supplement CoQ10 may help to reduce high blood pressure. A 12 week double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 83 people with systolic hypertension examined the effect of CoQ10 supplements (60 mg twice daily). After the 12 weeks, there was a mean reduction in systolic blood pressure of 17.8 mm Hg in the Coq10treated group. Another study conducted at the University of Western Australia looked at the effect of CoQ10 on blood pressure and glycemic control in 74 people with type 2 diabetes. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 100mg CoQ10 twice daily, 200mg of the drug fenfibrate, both, or neither for 12 weeks. CoQ10 significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure(mean reduction 6.1 mm Hg and 2.9 mm Hg respectively). There was also a reduction in HbA1C, a marker for longterm glycemic control. To learn more about CoQ10, read the Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) fact sheet.

Garlic
In a meta-analysis of seven randomized controlled trials of garlic supplements, three trials showed a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure and four in diastolic blood pressure. Researchers concluded that garlic powder supplement may be of clinical use in patients with mild high blood pressure. Garlic supplements should only be used under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner. Garlic can thin the blood (reduce the ability of blood to clot) similar to aspirin. Garlic may interact with many drugs and supplements such as the prescription drugs such as Coumadin (warfarin) or Trental (pentoxifylline), aspirin, vitamin E, gingko. It is usually recommended that people taking garlic stop in the weeks before and after any type of surgery. To learn more about garlic, go to the articles about garlic.

Hawthorn
The herb hawthorn is often used by traditional herbal practitioners for high blood pressure. In a randomized controlled trial conducted by researchers in Reading, UK, 79 patients with type 2 diabetes were randomized to receive either 1200 mg of hawthorn extract a day or placebo for 16 weeks. Medication for high blood pressure was used by 71 percent of the patients. At the end of the 16 weeks, patients taking the hawthorn supplement had a significant reduction in mean diastolic blood pressure (2.6 mm Hg). No herb-drug interactions were reported.

Fish oil
Preliminary studies suggest that fish oil may have a modest effect on high blood pressure. Although fish oil supplements often contain both DHA (docohexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), there is some evidence that DHA is the ingredient that lowers high blood pressure. Learn more about fish oil.

Folic acid
Folate is a B vitamin necessary for formation of red blood cells. It may help to lower high blood pressure in some people, possibly by reducing elevated homocysteine levels. One small study of 24 cigarette smokers found that four weeks of folic acid supplementation significantly lowered blood pressure. Learn more about folic acid. What Is High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure (HBP) is a serious condition that can lead to coronary heart disease (also called coronary artery disease), heart failure, stroke, kidney failure , and other health problems. "Blood pressure" is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. If this pressure rises and stays high over time, it can damage the body in many ways.

Overview
About 1 in 3 adults in the United States has HBP. The condition itself usually has no symptoms. You can have it for years without knowing it. During this time, though, HBP can damage the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other parts of your body. Knowing your blood pressure numbers is important, even when you're feeling fine. If your blood pressure is normal, you can work with your health care team to keep it that way. If your blood pressure is too high, treatment may help prevent damage to your body's organs.

Blood Pressure Numbers

Blood pressure is measured as systolic (sis-TOL-ik) and diastolic (di-a-STOL-ik) pressures. "Systolic" refers to blood pressure when the heart beats while pumping blood. "Diastolic" refers to blood pressure when the heart is at rest between beats. You most often will see blood pressure numbers written with the systolic number above or before the diastolic number, such as 120/80 mmHg. (The mmHg is millimeters of mercury the units used to measure blood pressure.) The table below shows normal blood pressure numbers for adults. It also shows which numbers put you at greater risk for health problems.

Categories for Blood Pressure Levels in Adults (measured in millimeters of mercury, or mmHg)
Category Normal Prehypertension High blood pressure Systolic (top number) Less than 120 120139 And Or Diastolic (bottom number) Less than 80 8089

Stage 1 Stage 2

140159 160 or higher

Or Or

9099 100 or higher

The ranges in the table apply to most adults (aged 18 and older) who don't have short-term serious illnesses. Blood pressure doesn't stay the same all the time. It lowers as you sleep and rises when you wake up. Blood pressure also rises when you're excited, nervous, or active. If your numbers stay above normal most of the time, you're at risk for health problems. All levels above 120/80 mmHg raise your risk, and the risk grows as blood pressure numbers rise. "Prehypertension" means you're likely to end up with HBP, unless you take steps to prevent it. If you're being treated for HBP and have repeat readings in the normal range, your blood pressure is under control. However, you still have the condition. You should see your doctor and follow your treatment plan to keep your blood pressure under control. Your systolic and diastolic numbers may not be in the same blood pressure category. In this case, the more severe category is the one you're in. For example, if your systolic number is 160 and your diastolic number is 80, you have stage 2 HBP. If your systolic number is 120 and your diastolic number is 95, you have stage 1 HBP. If you have diabetes or chronic kidney disease, HBP is defined as 130/80 mmHg or higher. HBP numbers also differ for children and teens. (For more information, go to "How Is High Blood Pressure Diagnosed?")

Outlook
Blood pressure tends to rise with age. Following a healthy lifestyle helps some people delay or prevent this rise in blood pressure.
