Bahasa Inggris 2 - Yes/No Question

Dalam bahasa Inggris, terdapat dua macam pertanyaan. Yes no Question dan Information Question. Information question adalah kalimat tanya yang menggunakan kata kata what, who, where, why, when, dan how. Yang akan kita coba bahas kali ini adalah yes no question Yes no Question adalah pertanyaan yang menuntut jawaban yes atau no. Jenis pertanyaan ini diawali denganauxiliary (is, am, are, was, were, do, does, did, have, has, had, can, may, must, should shall, will, could, atau would). Contoh: 1. Do you love me? Yes, I do/No, I dont 2. Are you sleepy? Yes, I am/No, I am not. 3. Can they climb the wall? Yes, they can/No, they cant. 4. Will you help me? Yes, I will/No, I will not. 5. Is it hot? Yes, It is/No, It isn't 6. Was it rain? Yes, It was/No,it wasn't Itu hanya beberapa contoh. Yang tidak boleh dilupakan adalah meletakkan auxilliary verb di depan kalimat sebelum subject. Dengan begitu otomatis kalimat akan berubah menjadi yes no question. Dan untuk jawaban, setelah kata yes atau no letakkan subject plus auxilliary verb When to Use Yes No Questions Yes No questions are questions that do not take a question word such as 'what', 'when', 'where', etc. Yes No questions are used to check information, ask for a confirmation and check facts. Here are some examples: Do you live in Seattle? Was he late for work yesterday? Are you coming to the meeting tomorrow? Yes No questions are generally answered with Yes No answers that include an auxiliary verb. Here are some examples:

Do you live in Seattle? - Yes, I do. Did he go to work yesterday? - Yes, he did. Are you coming to the meeting tomorrow? - No, I'm not. Notice that Yes answers include the subject and the full auxiliary verb: Are they working on that report? - Yes, they are. Have you ever visited Paris? - Yes, I have. Will you help me? - Yes, I will. No answers include the auxiliary verb plus not and often employs the short form (contraction): Do they live in Chicago? - No, they don't. Is she watching TV? - No, she isn't. Did we get the contract? - No, we didn't. Here is an overview of Yes No questions in a wide variety of tenses: Present Simple Do / Does + S + Verb? - (Do you like ice cream?) Yes, I do. No, I don't. Yes, he / she / it does. No, he / she / it doesn't. Yes, we / you / they do. No, we / you / they don't. Present Continuous Am / Is / Are + S + Verb + ing? - (Are they studying English?) Yes, I am. Making Simple Questions with BE

To make simple questions with a form of BE (is, am, are, was, were), the form is BE + subject + other words ? Examples: Joe is here today. ---> Is Joe here today? Alice and Bob were in an accident. ---> Were Alice and Bob in an accident? I'm on time. ---> Am I on time? The weather was nice yesterday. ---> Was the weather nice yesterday? You're tired. ---> Are you tired?

________________________________________ Answering Simple Questions with BE For simple questions with BE, there are three possible answers: with Yes, with No, and I don't know. The answers with Yes and No can be either complete sentences or "abbreviated forms": Examples: Is Joe here today? ---> Yes, Joe (he) is here today. Yes, he is. Yes. No, Joe (he) isn't here today. No, he isn't. (No, he's not.) No. I don't know.

Were Alice and Bob in an accident? ---> Yes, Alice and Bob (they) were in an accident. Yes, they were. Yes. No, Alice and Bob (they) were not (weren't) in an accident. No, they weren't. No. I don't know.

A. Yes/No Question Yes/No Questions are questions which answers are either yes or no. To build a yes/no question we need: 1. To be (is, am, are, was, were) Is he an actor? Yes, he is. Was the doctor in? Yes, he was. 2. Helping verb / auxiliary verb (do, does, did) Do you know him? No, I dont. Did he do this? No, he didnt.

3. Modals (can, may, should, must, might, could, will, shall)


Can you help me? Yes, I can. Should you go now? No, I shouldnt.

B. Wh-Questions Wh-Questions are questions with detailed answers. Wh-Questions are usually begun with: 1. Who (people) to ask for someone as a subject Who won the game? They did. 2. Whom (people) to ask for someone as an object.

Whom is she waiting for? She is waiting for Siti. 3. Whose to ask for someones possession

Whose book is this? Its mine. 4. Which to ask for someones choice

Which one do you like best? I like this one. 5. What to ask for information

What are you doing? Im typing a test. 6. Where to ask for information about place

Where are you? Im in here. 7. When to ask for information about time

When will the class begin? At 7 am. 8. How to ask for information about some specific things: how many/much, how old, how long, how far, how fast, how often, etc.
