REGNET PROGRAM REVIEW 2001-2006

KATHRYN DWAN

Context statement: June 2006

Dr Kathryn Dwan is an early career academic who moved to RegNet from the
University of Queensland in 2005. She is an interdisciplinary scholar, working across
the disciplines of sociology, medicine and public policy. With Emeritus Professor
John Western, she has also made a very important contribution to the field of social
inequality with the publication of "Patterns of Social Inequality" in the Cambridge
Handbook of Social Sciences in Australia.

The four papers presented for review represent work in regulation and governance.
Taken together they demonstrate Dwan's facility with both qualitative and
quantitative research methods, her capacity to work alone and with others, and her
ability to publish internationally and in sources which reach practitioners. This
ensures that her contribution is of relevance beyond academia. For instance, the
article published in Australian Family Physician in 2005 prompted medical readers to
contact Dwan personally, appreciating the quality of her analysis and her handling of
sensitive material. This work has been cited in presentations by medical
practitioners. In further support of the relevance and reach of her work, Dwan's
doctoral research on communication between doctors and bureaucrats was the
subject of an article in Medical Observer (1 April 2005), a weekly magazine sent to
every Australian doctor.
