Evaluation of Qualitative and Quantitative Primary Research

For the primary research of my coursework I did a questionnaire and two interviews. My questionnaire was my qualitative research and was based on genres of horror films and conventions of horror films, my target audience would like to see. I asked 20 people aged 17 19 years olds to complete the 10 questions. My questionnaire was based on horror films genres and types of horror story formats. I also filmed 2 interviews with two people who had completed my initial questionnaire so I could gather further information about what my target audience would like to see. My questionnaire results told me most people liked psyche (normal people but with mental problems) as their chose of horror sub-genre for the type of horror movie they would like to see. 40% of people who answered the questionnaire said they preferred psyche horror films. The results of the questionnaire also showed the target audience would also like a horror movie to be a mockumentary. 55% also preferred a linear story line (a straight story line, beginning-middle-end) rather than a nonlinear story line. 30% of people wanted to see blood and gore in the movie and another 30% wanted to see screaming and suffering in the movie. This could be because teenagers these days seem to be desensitised to violence as there is a lot in the media and in movies and TV. These were the most popular movie conventions people wanted to see. For the most part people wanted a realistic story line rather than a non realistic story line. The majority preferred screaming narrative at the beginning of the scene and most people wanted the opening scene to end with a cliff hanger. Generally people went for a horror movie is set in the present time era. This is probably because the characters in horror films today are younger teenagers in peril and the audience can relate with them. People equally decided they didnt mind whether the setting would be in school or out of school. Most people didnt want to see the killer in the opening scene.
My interviews further supported this results my questionnaire gave me for example by not seeing the killer in the opening scene my interviewees said this would create more suspense. They also wanted described how setting could make a film more scary and how films such as The Blair Witch Project appealed to them. They also wanted the film to realistic as it would make them feel it could happen to them or someone they know. They felt a villain would be effective if they had some kind of disfigurement or wore a mask so they would look strange and not normal. These ideas would be helpful as I planned my film.
