Busy Season for Bowie Squadron Members

As we wind down from our busy season, it is worth taking a look back at the accomplishments of the Bowie Squadron in the last few months. Preparing for Air Show In preparation for the Joint Services Open House (JSOH) at Andrews Air Force Base in May, squadron members gathered at Freeway Airport. The goal was to get the squadron plane washed and waxed before the aircraft was transported to the base. To everyones surprise the airplane was gone when they arrived. It turns out the aircraft was moved earlier than expected by the Air Force liaison for Maryland Wing. So, all eyes turned to the mini-jet which also needed a good cleaning before being moved to Andrews. JSOH at Andrews AFB On the big day, Civil Air Patrol units from across Maryland joined forces with CAP squadrons from the National Capitol Wing to promote the Air Force Auxiliary at the JSOH. Officers and cadets from various squadrons helped work the CAP booth in Hangar 2. A CAP Cessna 182 was on display along with our squadrons mini-jet. During the three day event, hundreds of adults and chil-

U.S. CAP goes Hollywood

Rumor has it that the U.S. Civil Air Patrol or CAP is mentioned in the latest Bruce Willis action thriller, Live Free or Die Hard. Have you seen the movie? If so, tell us about it on the squadron forum.

The procession included the CAP car, a CAP banner, the cadet color guard, the CAP mini-jet and cadets wearing full search and rescue gear.

It is a day that some will not forget. Half-way through the parade route, the mini-jets engine shut off. To keep the plane moving, squadron members worked together to push the aircraft along. With temperatures over the 90 degree mark, this was no

easy task. First Lieutenant James Holderbaum followed along attempting to restart the engine to no avail. Meanwhile, Cadet John Brennan enjoyed the ride. He was rewarded the honor of piloting the mini-jet for his many contributions to the unit over the past year. Bowiefest More than a dozen Bowie Squadron members turned out for this years Bowiefest. The yearly event is used to make the community aware of CAPs missions and to recruit new members. Young visitors were given the opportunity to sit in the mini-jet, learn about model rocketry and to take a testride in the flight simulator.

Get to Know an Officer Dave Manion

Squadron Positions: Squadron Operations Officer; Flight Release Officer Rank: 1st Lieutenant Length of Service: 2 years

Why did you join CAP? I always wanted to fly and thought that this would be a good way to give back something to the community while I'm doing something I love to do.

Dave Manion teaching mission scanner classes

I help keep our aircraft flying and ready to support Search and Rescue operations. The aircraft has to undergo monthly inspections and the paperwork has to go to wing and national headquarters to ensure that we are maintaining the Air Force assets that we have been assigned. I make sure that our squadron continues to be the best in Maryland Wing. What is your job outside of CAP?

I work as a program manager for Perot Systems Government Services division, managing a systems development program to build the next generation polar-orbiting weather satellite ground processing system for NOAA (the guys who bring you the SARSAT signals that alert us to where downed aircraft have been observed). What are your hobbies ? Flying. What is your favorite color? Blue. If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? (For example, the ability to fly, x-ray vision, superstrength, etc.) Ability to fly. I would have to be cheaper...

Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself? I wear a Navy ball cap when I fly as I was a Naval Aviation Reserve Officer Candidate (AVROC) in the early 70's. I always get a strange look when at a SAREX, as it isn't normal for a pilot to wear anything "Navy" when flying an Air Force aircraft. The good news is that the regulations permit. The CAP regulations do not say that I can't. My wife and I have been married almost 25 years, and I have a daughter (20+) and a son (12+). Born & raised in Pittsburgh, PA, I graduated from California State College with a BS in Education and from the University of Maryland University College with a MS in Technology Management.

What do you do in your positions? Coordinate aircrew missions and squadron aircraft maintenance and, if needed, ground operations. How does your work in this position help our squadron/ CAP?
