MAYMANA S CASE I.Identifying Information Name Maymana Age late 40s Education- illiterate with two years of schooling Maymana s Husband- Hafeez No of Children Mofizul (youngest) Source of Income- three rickshaw for hire and an acre of paddy land II. MayMana s Family Socio Economic Condition In early 1990, Maymana family is categorized as occasionally poor whose condition is described as a little above poverty line, but vulnerable to become an income poor should they will be affected of any of the following shock, e.g. ill-health, a robbery, downturn in business. For Maymana, she is satisfied with their life condition, however, quite concern of dowry given that two daughters are already on teens. The youngest child Mofizul has growth on his back and is often unwell. Hafeez experienced pain in his throat and coughed a lot. He sought medical advise and was prescribed with expensive medicines but all these didnt work for him. He was referred to other doctor where he underwent quite expensive treatment. That forced them to sell the rickshaw in order afford the medical bill. However, Hafeez condition worsened which required him to undergo other medical test that pushed them to ell another rickshaw. This in turn further affected their living condition specifically their weekly income as they are limited now with only one rickshaw to hire out. The family had to reduce it consumption of clothes and other necessities. But Hafeez condition grew worse. He lost a lot of weight and was confined at the house. The family sold the remaining rickshaw that made them dependent to the small plot of land where their supply of rice derive and from occasional domestic work. In 1998, Hafeez died after a brief stay at the hospital.

After husbands death, Maymana s family living condition got worsen especially when her father in law took control of the household agricultural lot. This led her to began borrowing, gleaning and begging for food. Her married children, neighbours and a mosquito committee helped her that ally enabled her and her child Mofizul survive. She is often unwell, but to survived she usually gleaned rice from harvested fields and areas where rice is processed and borrowed food and money. Mofizul though often not in good condition ha managed to find casual work through gleaning, borrowing, begging and receiving charity. He is determined to work despite his ill health, lack of education and disability. III. ANALYIS Why was Maymana poor? a. Immediate Problem-Maymana encounters difficulty to meet their daily consumption such as food and emergency needs e.g. medicines b. Effects ill health both of Maymana and son Mofizul; outstanding loan c. Causes-the family source of income can only meet their present needs but not enough to meet emergency needs. IV. What will you do to help Maymana out of poverty? A. First there is a need to help Maymana and family address her immediate needs , to meet her daily consumption. Goal: To improve her health condition and address the familys immediate daily consumption. Intervention: Engaged Maymana does she want to continue her current efforts of meeting her immediate need through loan and begging? Had he utilize the opportunities surrounding her to meet such. If not, she can be informed of the possible resources such as food subsidy from social service agency and health services to improve their health condition. B. Use the Social Work Practice Strengths Based Perspectives- Focus: clients assets-talents, abilities, and competencies; an appreciation of and respect for the assets of individuals, families, and communities. Goal: To enable Maymana use their current strengths to improve her socio- economic condition. Intervention: 1. Set Goal and Plan with Maymana and family, targeting the problems on causes of her poverty situation. Example of Helping Goal: To enable the family have sustained and stable source of income that will meet both the immediate needs and emergency needs. 2. Identify priority problems a. The need to improve the family livelihood b. The need to for the family to own a house 3. Interventions: a. Capability building focus on skills training and livelihood and healthy lifestyles and values formation; family savings mobilization b. Provision of capital assistance c. Set plan with Maymana how to pay outstanding loan d. Close monitoring and counselling
