PH 136 – SEMICONDUCTOR PHYSICS AND OPTO ELECTRONICS
(Common to Information Technology)
Time: Three hours Maximum: 100 MARKS

Answer ALL questions.

PART A – [10 X 2 = MARKS]

1. Explain energy band diagram of n type semi conductor indicating location of


fermilevel and impurity energy states.

2. what is p-i-n diode? Illustrate carrier generation in reverse biased p-i-n diode
under irradiation with necessary diagram.

3. distinguish between Type I and Type II super conductors indicating salient


properties of each of them.

4. write down the merits and demerits of a liquid crystal display system.

5. give the draw backs of analog modulation. What is the frequency range it is
recommended to use?

6. explain pockels and kerr effect with respect to applicability to electro optic
system.

7. give the expression for refractive index profile for step and graded index fibres
and draw the corresponding index profiles.

8. mention atleast four requisite characteristics of fibre optic detectors.

9. give a schematic diagram of floppy disc indicating its parts.

10. what is holography? Give the principle of holographic recording.

PART B – [5 X 16 = 80 MARKS]

11. (a) Deduce the eigen values and eigen function for particle in one dimensional
box and extend the same to three dimensional box. What is energy eigen value for
first three states for an electron in one dimensional box of length 3.5A. (assume the
value of Planck’s Constant and mass of electron). [16 MARKS]

(b) (i) Discuss different process and their efficiencies that combine to produce
external conversion efficiencies. Out of these which is most significant? [12 MARKS]

(ii) Calculate output power from Ga-As LED with electron current of 1.0mA and
efficiency 50% (Assume total current is = to electron injection current). [4 MARKS]

12. (a) (i) Discuss how Josephson effect is used in SQUIDS. [5 MARKS]

(ii) Explain how SQUIDS could be used to sense very small signals. [7 MARKS]

(iii) Calculate the frequency of radiation which the Josephson junction emtis when it
detects 5 µV. [4 MARKS]

(b) (i) What are metallic glasses? Which are materials normally used? Indicate their
applications. [8 MARKS]

(ii) Write a note on Shape Memory Alloys. [8 MARKS]

13. (a) (i) Give an account on quantum confined stark effect (QCSE) and its
applications. [10 MARKS]

(ii) Explain the function of quantum well electro absorption modulator. Calculate on-
off ratio of a 100 A Ga As/Al 0.2 Ga 0.8 QCSW Modulated under applied field of
100kV/Cm. [6 MARKS]

(b) (i) Discuss working of Tunable logic gates. [9 MARKS]

(ii) Give the Truth Tables for Multiple Quantum well hetero junction bipolar Transistor
(MQW-HBT) switching gate at different voltages. [7 MARKS]

14. (a) (i) Give the advantages of optical fibre system. [5 MARKS]

(ii) Discuss Dispersion and attenuation losses in fibre transmission. [7 MARKS]

(iii) An optical fibre has an average loss of 1dB/km. At what distance Transmitted
signal power would fall by 75%. [4 MARKS]

(b) (i) Explain regenerative and nonregenerative amplifer. [8 MARKS]

(ii) Write a note on p-i-n diode and Avalanche photo diode detectors used on optical
systems. [8 MARKS]

15. (a) (i) Explain susceptibility and permeability of magnetic material. What will be
their order of magnitudes in various magnetic material? [4 MARKS]

(ii) How do you store information and retrieve information stored in magnetic bubble
and indicate the materials used for the same. [12 MARKS]

OR

(b) Describe the track structure of CD ROM and how do you use optical read out
method to retrieve information stored in disc. Compare the storage capacity and
speed of CD ROM with floppy disc. [4 + 6 + 6 MARKS]
