Seniors who have been struggling financially to stay in their own home may get a helping hand from the province. On March 5 discussion began when Seniors Minister George VanderBurg brought forward the Seniors Property Tax Deferral Act to the province. What were going to do is were going to enable Albertans to defer their property taxes, part or all of it, so they can stay in their home longer, said VanderBurg, at Sagewoods grand opening on March 2. The example VanderBurg gave is if the property tax is $3,000, the province will pay that to the municipality and upon death or transfer of the title then the municipality will pay back the province with an interest rate that will be set by the Treasury Board. In the case of a death, the monies owed to the province will be taken care of through the persons estate; it will not fall upon family members to clear up the debt. There are so many of our parents that are house rich, and cash poor and to be able to have a couple of hundred extra dollarsis pretty important, said VanderBurg. Municipalities will be worried whos going to pay the bill. The province will pay the bill on behalf of the senior, and the senior will have the equity in their home that theyll lever with the province. VanderBurg expects the program to cost $1.5 million initially and could be in place by 2013. The program will be equity based. Basically the homeowner will enter into a home-equity loan agreement with the province, provided the owner has 25 per cent equity in their home. There are still a number of details to be worked out with the proposed law.

Benefit concert helps students in need globally

The goal for this years Kits for Kids benefit concert was to raise $3,000 for Free the Children organization. Organizer Brooklyn Davidson said on March 6 she believes the approximate total is $4,700. Students showed off their various talents, and there were plenty of singers, dancers and even belly dancers.
Autographed Flames jersey to help Youth Assembly

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter A few months ago Mayor Steve Grajczyk donated a Flames jersey, signed by the current roster, to the Strathmore Assembly of Youth (SAY) to raffle off. SAY, formerly known as the Youth Council, has finally gotten everything in place and tickets are now on sale. Grajczyk had purchased the jersey and had been looking for a group to donate the jersey to. They dont work with a whole bunch of money, they more work in an advisory role and having some money allows them to get some tangible results not just give advice, which is kind of nice for them, said Jill McDonald, teacher advisor for SAY. We are going to use it to try to implement some of the solutions the kids have come up with, maybe something related to vandalism, and hopefully some guest speakers for the group to try and kind of improve their research. There are nine students involved in SAY, five from Strathmore High School, and four from Holy Cross Collegiate. The purpose of SAY is to provide youth input to town council, so either help them see some of the issues that youth are facing, or provide a different perspective when solving problems in town. They are working on some vandalism issues, so maybe a dedicated space for graffiti, also talking about having an artist come in and dealing with some of the really prone-to-graffiti areas in town, put up some murals or something, said McDonald. They are also doing some work on recreation and trying to provide some things for kids to do in town other than nothing, because that is the common complaint your hear is there is nothing to do. Anyone purchasing tickets must be at least 18 years old, and the draw will take place on March 19. Tickets are being sold for $5 each and can be purchased at Strathmore High School, Holy Cross Collegiate or by contacting strathmoreassemblyofyouth@gmail.com.
Strathmore Rural Fire and Strathmore Town Fire Departments as well as RCMP and eMS were called to eagle Lake Feb. 25 when a pair of fishermen fell through the ice in their truck while attempting to leave the lake after a day of fishing. The pair escaped with only cold, wet feet but sadly a pet dog was presumed drowned in the truck. High winds and blinding snow made locating the truck on the ice difficult and dangerous for the firefighters as they hoped there may be a chance they could save the pet, but by the time they arrived at the scene the cab of the truck was completely submerged.

Every seven seconds in Canada, a child is bullied. This alarming statistic fuels the passion that is behind the now annual events held across Canada for campaign Pink Shirt Day. Students across Canada show their support by wearing pink to symbolize that bullying of any kind will not be tolerated. In this age of technology cyber-bullying is becoming far too prevalent in todays society. Twittering, Facebook and cyber texting are quickly becoming avenues for major bullying. RCMP have said they are able to track such events if they are made aware of the problems. The flip side of social networking is that young people are beginning to use

Talent showcased at Siksika Idol

Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor The Amphitheatre at Siksika High school was packed with family and friends supporting the student contestants from the area in becoming the first Siksika Idol last Wednesday, Feb. 29. Twenty-four performers took the stage and all did a tremendous job. It took a lot of courage and practicing to step out of their comfort zones and showcase their talents. The evening began at 6:30 p.m. and two hours later all 24 contestants had given it their all. The judges had a hard time picking a winner from the entire group. In the end there was a three-way tie between three young ladies. April Minde who sang Taylor Swifts Tear Drops on my Guitar, Shayna Leather who sang Lights by Savior and finally Mikayla McHugh Sharp who sang Country Strong by Gwyneth Paltrow. All three girls had to give an encore performance and the audience broke the three-way tie by applause. Mikayla McHugh Sharp won over her two senior competitors. She was gracious in her acceptance of the very first Siksika Idol trophy. Sharp also left the evening with a minirecording session with one of the high school students. Sharp said thank you to all her fellow competitors and to the audience for coming out. She also thanked the judges and wished everyone a good night. Guy Morin recently took the position as Vice Principal of Siksika High School. He said that it was an exciting new beginning for Siksika students and looks forward to having them showcase more of their talents in the near future.

Sagewood hosts grand opening

Though the Sagewood Seniors Community officially opened its doors a few months ago, March 2 marked the official grand opening. Councillors from both the town and Wheatland County were in attendance, along with Minister of Seniors George VanderBurg, MLA Arno Doerkson, and Mayor Steve Grajczyk. Its really exciting, I mean when I think of the history, the community has waited a long time for local accommodation for seniors, and this represents a lot of planning, a lot of commitment from the community to Strathmore, said Doerkson. I cant say enough about the commitment from the County of Wheatland and the Town of Strathmore to their commitment for developing something that serve our community into the future. This is an exiting day, there have been a few delays along the way but here we are and the future is bright. The federal minister and all of the provincial ministers will be meeting in the spring to share best practices. VanderBurg said visiting Sage-
wood and Meadowlark Senior Care Home and seeing their practices are the things he wants to talk about with the other ministers, while learning some of the things facilities in their jurisdictions have been doing. VanderBurg said meeting the people at both Meadowlark and Sagewood is a testimony that the needs are being met, people have a smile on their faces, they are well taken care of, are safe and socially involved. He said the staff is also the testimony he needs, he can see they love going to work and taking care of our parents and grandparents. Its not all the fancy dcor, its the people and I have to tell you I am very impressed with the facility and the community. To participate here is something very, very special, said VanderBurg. We dont have this in 365 communities in Alberta, we have this in Strathmore and its absolutely amazing for a small community to be able to step up to the plate. I know there were hurdles but there were no hurdles today when we cut that ribbon. AgeCare Health Services is looking forward to breaking ground later this year to begin Phase 2 of the Sagewood Seniors Community.
Sagewood held its grand opening on March 2. There was a band providing entertainment, caricatures, a photo booth, and of course the ribbon cutting.
Feasibility study provides next steps for arts council

Almost one year ago the Hope Bridges Society received a grant to help cover the costs of a feasibility study for a new arts facility in Strathmore. The grant came from the provincial government through the Rural Community Adaptation Program (RCAP). With guidance and expertise from RC Strategies, a Feasibility Study Committee was formed comprised of members of various local arts groups, Councilors from the Town and County, and local area residents, to work on and create the study, which was made public on Feb. 28. One of the key findings of the study was the need to form an Arts Society/ Council to represent the arts groups in the region. Weve actually said its a pre-requisite to doing anything in terms of a facility, said Michael Roma with RC Strategies. The ultimate recommendation of the study is to form a regional arts council, and in this study there is some ideas as to what the composition should be. Theres a terms of reference in there that should an arts council be formed they could use that or they could modify it. The foundation is there for that to occur now, and I guess a sub recommendation is an actual facility concept. Roma said the facility outlined in the proposal is for a building equivalent to the Civic Centre, but specifically equipped to meet the needs of the arts community. Roma admitted that the facility outlined would not be realistic for the community now. The proposal outlines what would be needed to help the Arts Council further arts programs in the area. Thats a good initiative, I think the approach that is being taken to plan with the future in mind is really important, said MLA Arno Doerkson. There will be programs where we can partner with communities, there is a good model of that happening. I think thats where the innovative
thinking comes in too, to look at multi uses, or what kinds of local partnerships can we create to strengthen our community really. Hope Bridges was the key to getting the feasibility study done, but from the beginning they have brought other groups in to share thoughts and opinions. Hope Bridges is still hoping to hear from different arts groups, such as culinary arts, dance groups, and many others. Some of the next steps outlined in the proposal are: the formation and capacity building of a new regional Arts Society with the support of the Town and County Councils; commitment by Town and County Councils to move forward with design and development of potential facility options; community fundraising for potential facility development options; design and construction of potential facility options once funding is secured; ongoing operations of arts programming and facilities throughout the region.

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., CrowFoot Parliamentary Report Many of you have heard Ontario Premier Dalton McGuintys attempt to dismiss positive accounts of the economic benefits our oil sands are providing Canada. McGuinty says Canadas high petro dollar has hobbled exporters in his province. I say the global demand for oil and gas from Western Canada is not McGuintys problem. In fact, my Conservative Cabinet colleague, the Honourable Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural Resources was one of the first to point out that the Ontario Premier ought not to bite the hand that feeds him. Minister Oliver reminds all of us that Canada has always been rich in natural resources and we have become a rich nation by exporting them. Since Confederation, exporting the vast majority of our resources to the U.S. has been a fruitful trade relationship for Canada. However, this is not a sustainable strategy because we need more foreign customers for our energy to continue to create jobs and economic growth in Canada going forward. Not to mention the federal tax revenues raised and sent to Ontario which achieved have-not status under Premier McGuintys command. Ontario should respect the fact that Canadas resource sector is poised to lead the economic growth in our nation with over $500 billion in potential investment over the next decade. Much of this investment is to supply Asian markets. This investment, though, is not guaranteed. We are competing against energy exporting countries around the world. One of the largest impediments we face is the billions of dollars currently caught-up in Canadas inefficient regulatory system that takes years upon years to make most decisions and up to nine years for others. For example, were currently in competition with Australia to supply energy to the emerging Asian market. The Australian regulatory system takes only 12 to 18 months to complete. There are hundreds of thousands of jobs at stake in Canada. These jobs will not just be in the resource sector, but in every sector from the service industry to the financial services sector including those in Ontario. Successful energy exports will help bring jobs back to our manufacturing sector as every resource project requires manufacturing of equipment from pipes to trucks to steel beams and other infrastructure some of it built in Ontario? Canadians want our government to ensure that we maintain and enhance our strong environmental safeguards. Our regulatory system must be fair, independent, consider different viewpoints that are based on science and the facts. Canada needs to be able to review the evidence dispassionately and then make a determination on energy export projects. There are close to 400,000 jobs in our oil sands that contribute an average of $22 billion a year to government revenues to help pay for everything from education and health care to roads and clean energy. Estimates say that over the next 25 years there will be over 700,000 jobs and $3.3 trillion that will be contributed to Canadas gross domestic product. Canada must prepare to provide the booming Asia-Pacific economies our oil, gas, metals and minerals they are already asking and we know the regulatory reforms we clearly need to make to ensure Canadas future prosperity by, as always, exporting our natural resources. The Dark Side of Psychology

Pat Fule Fule for Thought I had a Psychology professor at the University of Calgary. He lectured a lot on human behaviour, and as well, the behaviour of people in group settings. He told us that he even did a little conditioning program on his baby boy! Anytime the little guy had an unpleasant experience, like hunger cries, an upset stomach, or teething, he would show him a colour photo of his wife!! I think its amazing, and definitely a little crazy that he would do that (ironic, ehthat a Psychology professor might be a little crazy himself)! After a relatively short time went by, the baby boy started to associate his moms face/appearance with unpleasant things! He even would start to cry whenever he saw her! He had come to associate her image with unpleasant, or painful things. I dont know HOW he would have done it, but his wife MADE him un-condition their baby! This professor went on to tell us that we all have a comfort zone around us, a bubble that we only let people were close to, come near. He gave us the example of a near empty theatre. He said people will come in and sit away from other people. He told us to watch this behaviour, as they would purposely sit with a friend(s) with a few seats of a buffer between them and strangers. He also said if you really wanted to see them get REALLY uncomfortable, sit right next to one of the people, rather than any seat far away! This person would begin to fidget, and try to create space they may even leave to return farther away. This actually happened to me at the recent Teachers Convention. I had arrived at the Keynote Speaker, and picked a row with only two guys in it. One was at one end, the other near the middle aisle. I settled in a few seats away from each guy, ready to be inspired, when two ladies came in. They had so many seats to choose from, yet they sat RIGHT next to me! My profs example had come true! First, I felt infringed upon, and a bit annoyed. Before I knew it, I was trying to create more space, by leaning to the left and away from the lady next to me! We all rose for the National anthem, and I was trying to decide if I should sit back down next to them, or over one or two seats! Then, of all things, I was worried that move might offend them! I didnt know them, why should I care about their feelings, when they came RIGHT into my own personal bubble! So, I sat back down, and leaned to the left for the whole speech. I was trapped by them and what I thought was good manners! When I was 14, my friends and I did a kind of reversal of this experiment (this is one you can easily try, too). I grew up in Canmore, and we always went to Banffs Lux theatre for movies. The theatre was packed, and no more seats were available. My older brother had to go to the bathroom and then the concession. That was a big mistake! He thought hed make it back on time he was wrong! The theatre was now VERY dark, and we were doing our best to blend in with the crowd. You never want to totally slouch thats a dead giveaway. Instead, we stayed in a proper seated position, but we faced away from Gary, as he walked the aisle searching for us! I know, I know, this is a bit mean, but when youre 14 and you get a chance to stick it to your older brother alls fair game! It was almost sad, except for the silent laughing part. He vainly walked down and up the dark aisle whispering our names. Pat! I could hear, in an increasingly strained voice. By now he was being shushed and even tried to get his bearings on the opposite aisle, still whispering! After many more pleading calls of my name, he resorted to my friends names. I begged them, but they took pity on him flagging him down! This had been good sport and Phase 2 was him trying to shuffle across our row, loaded with popcorn and pop, facing even MORE shushing! Over the last few years of high school, we continued to hit the Lux Theatre for movies, but Gary never left us alone for the concession! Once, in another crowded movie, he rose to go. I asked, Really, Gary.you REALLY want to do that? He sat back down uncomfortably, and stayed where he was. If he did have to go, he never said a word. He sat with an uncomfortable look on his face, and every now and then, shot a glare at me! I didnt know it at 14, but maybe there WAS something to this conditioning stuff!

Is Attawapiskat forgotten
To the Editor In light of the recent events in across Canada and on Parliament Hill, I personally am disgusted with the current government. Even in some non-partisans views on the web there have many unanswered questions. You may or may not be aware of the events of the last couple of months. Here is my take on one of the current majority governments actions or rather in-actions. First of all I have yet to see any concrete results to help the First Nations people of Attawapiskat despite numerous cries from across the nation to help these people in their crisis. The current federal government in my opinion has used excuses and partisan politics in their failings for all First nations people. Here is a quote for you from www. standupandunite.com MP Charlie Anguss (Timmins/St. James Bay) recent asked the rhetorical question What if They Declared an Emergency and No One Came? in his recent op-ed piece in Huffington Post (11/21/11) . The community of the Attawapiskat First Nation certainly knew the answer. Past experience has clearly demonstrated to this community, no matter how disastrous the situation could possible be, no one would come. They, along with many of our Native communities, are truly the forgotten people. The outpouring from the community, every day people, has been immense. This situation though is untenable and our government needs to fulfill its duties to its citizens, not only when a crisis arises, but on a continual basis. Please shame our government into providing the assistance needed to re-build this community. While these people have been living in dilapidated houses, tents, sheds and even a trailer left behind by mining company De Beers without electricity or water for over two years, nothing much has been done to alleviate their suffering. The federal government has promised a token $500,000 in aid which will barely scratch the surface. How, in one of the worlds wealthier nations, is it permissible for our native people to live in third world conditions? Contact your government officials and demand that act in the interest of all of its population, including our first people. Sign the petition, demand action for the Attawapiskat First Nation, to shame the Canadian Federal and the Ontario Provincial governments into taking action and rebuilding this community. It is disgraceful that a country like Canada is treating its own people like with complete disrespect. Attawapiskat was thrust into the news last fall when it declared a state of emergency because of a crisis that had some families living in underserviced buildings and makeshift shelters including sheds and tents. 2 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes 1 lb lean ground beef 2 yellow onions, chopped 2 green bell peppers, chopped 5 cloves garlic, chopped 2 tbsp white sugar 1 tbsp dried basil 1/2 tsp dried oregano Salt and pepper to taste
In a stockpot or large kettle, brown the ground beef with the onions, peppers, garlic. Pour in tomatoes, and reduce heat. Add sugar, basil and oregano, and simmer about 40 minutes. Season with salt and pepper before serving.

Shrapnel is not usually a word in a teenagers vocabulary, but for Courtney Bangen it is one she will probably remember for a long time. Bangen was one of the 52 chosen, out of 13,000 Grade 4 - 8 students, to compete in the Postmedia Canspell National Spelling Bee, which was held in Calgary on March 3. Bangen, a Grade 8 Crowther Memorial Junior High (CMJHS) student, made it to the third round before the word shrapnel came up for her. I made it to round three and then I got out, said Bangen, who had never heard the word before. Terry Motley, a teacher with CMJHS, enters his school for the bee. The 400 CMJHS Grade 7 and 8 students then take a written spelling test and the top 25 kids are picked to compete in the oral spelling bee at the school. The school winner then has to write another test to vie for a spot at the National Spelling Bee. I was so proud I could burst, I was just teary eyed. Both her father and I just
thought she handled everything with such poise and confidence, said Christy Bangen, Courtneys mom. It was definitely a special event that she was able to take part in. It was really neat, and it was so well organized. The first round began with easy words such as lemon, and progressively became harder with each round. They werent all that tricky because I didnt make it that far, but there were a few I hadnt heard before. I would say them to myself as other people were spelling them and if they got it right, Id be like oh I probably would have gotten that one wrong, said Courtney. Courtney didnt get very nervous, but said one girl beside her was shaking from nerves. The best part for Courtney about taking part in the bee was getting to hear all the different words, and meeting new people and finding different points of view and study techniques. Christy Bangen found it to be such an amazing experience watching her daughter on stage, and encourages any youth who have the ability and opportunity to take part in the spelling bee to do so.

The Strathmore Legion #10 just hosted Alberta/Northwest Territories Command Seniors Crib Playoffs, Feb. 24 and 25th. There were 17 teams who attended, and enjoyed all that Strathmore had to offer. Water concerns still an issue

To the Editor I was asked the other day if there had been any improvements as to water temperature at the Strathmore Aquatic Centre. This person had once attended regularly, but was unable to go anymore because of the affects of the cold water on her wellbeing. Unfortunately, I had to say not recently. I then had to admit that I had cut down on my thrice-weekly attendance because of the uncomfortable conditions. There have been several meetings with Town officials, concerned citizens and management of the pool, but despite documented promises, no positive change has occurred. Several members have recorded the pool temperature over a period of time, but this information has been largely ignored. The latest meeting ended in a proposal to hire someone to monitor the temperature over a defined period of time, and this expert would come up with suggestions. This would make one wonder, if management at our pool has the qualifications to operate this very important facility. Joyce Nelson Strathmore
Eyeing a new position

To the Editor Recently it was brought to everyones attention that Council has asked the question is it possible for a council member to be employed by the Town of Strathmore. Under the Local Authorities Election Act Revised Statutes of Alberta 2000 Chapter L-21 current as of Oct. 1, 2011 to paraphrase: A Town of Strathmore Employee must resign their position or request a leave of absence prior to becoming eligible to run for council. Other political rules require a council member to resign their position before seeking other political aspirations. Therefore similar regulations should be enforced to protect the citizens of Strathmore and prevent any actual or perceived conflict of interest. Which members of council have brought this question to the forefront and for what reasons? Does someone have their eye on a potential upcoming position that the rest of us are unaware of? How many companies publish that a position is available only to have that position filled by the boss son or nephew before anyone is even interviewed? Sort of like having the fox babysit the chicken coupe. You were elected to look out for the citizens of Strathmores best interests before your own. We are all in this together, Mr. John M. Who is in charge of the pool?

To the Editor I am sending this letter about the Strathmore Pool and the on going dispute over who is in charge of the management. Many of us seniors who wish to use the pool find the temperature of the water too cold for comfort. Another private club of young swimmers have taken over calling the shots on water temperature etc., in our community pool. Meetings have been held between various parties and Mayor Grajczyk of the town, he has issued orders to the Pool Staff regarding management and temperature of the water. Ivy Bogstie, nee Watts, was born in Namaka on Jan. 11, 1917, the sixth of nine children. Her Dad worked at the lumber yard, before working at the National Grain elevator in Namaka. Her mother worked as a midwife for Dr. Giffen. Ivy went to school through Grade 8 at Namaka, before becoming a farm labourer. Around age 14, she moved to Gleichen and stayed with friends, while she did odd jobs in Gleichen and Arrowwood. A couple of the places she worked at included Wilsons Service Station, and Farquharsons Drug Store. She met her husband-to-be Gordon, at a coming home party for Stan Haskayne. After Gordon and Ivys wedding in 1946, they moved into the house where Ivy lives, and has lived in for the past
66 years! This house was built in 1904, and the only upgrade has been to install indoor plumbing. Their marriage produced two sons and a daughter, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. One son lives in B.C., her daughter lives in Calgary, and her other son Richard lives in Gleichen. Gordon was a mechanic at Central Motors, then worked with Alberta Transportation, before passing away from Lou Gehrigs disease at the age of 58, in 1976. Ivys community activities in and around Gleichen include the upkeep of the town park, and working to preserve the wooden water tower built in 1911. It has now been designated as an Historical Site and Landmark by the provincial government. Her son Richard assisted in this project. A model of this Water Tower appears in the annual Gleichen Parade. For her services at the Park, the Dept. of Parks
and Recreation have advised there will be a park bench installed at the park with Ivys name on it. She has been a stalwart volunteer worker of Gleichen & Cluny Jubilee Club which opened in 1981. She was President of The Home and School Association, ran the bingo at The Royal Canadian Legion, and is still very supportive of The Sequoia Outreach School. She was a Cub master, and participated in Group Camps at Carseland for her troop of up to 21 cubs. They held group camps with other cubs from Rockyford, Tudor, Strathmore, Namaka, and Cheadle. Ivy still walks around town with her walker, and Im told her garden is a mass of colour in the summer. In its heyday, Gleichen boasted a population of over 2,600. This has now dropped to around 400. The opening of the TransCanada Hwy in the late 1950s or early 1960s, caused Canadian Pacific Railway to remove Gleichen as a regular train stop. Paterson Grain
Terminal opened in 2011, replacing the old grain elevators. The CIBC and Royal Bank closed their doors, and were replaced by ATB which originated in a downtown store, but now operates in the Black Castle Industries building. Over the years many businesses have closed, but there is indication that some are returning. Family Foods have opened a large food store in town, and others are planned. St Andrews Anglican Church, will be 126 years old this year, and is still in use today. Construction was started in 1885, and the first service was held on November 30, 1886, under the diocese of Saskatchewan and Northwest Territories. It is the oldest non-renovated church in Alberta, and has also been designated as a Historical Site and Landmark by the provincial government As the oldest living resident in Gleichen, still in her own home, Ivy has seen many changes throughout this area, during the past 95 years.

One hundred years of recorded history provides a glimpse of the obstacles that the community has faced and how its women have remained undaunted in seeking a better quality of life for their families, while working to create a better world. In addition to untold hours of labour and the hundreds of thousands of dollars that has been raised and donated to worthy causes, a review of the Clubs Minute Books indicates that the organization has been an ethical compass providing consistent direction for community betterment. These activities include but are not limited to: November 11, 1919 A banquet held after the Remembrance Day Service to honour the soldiers returned to the community. (The Public Benefit Club continues to host the lunch after the Remembrance Day Service.) October 1920 A discussion and actions taken regarding Prohibition. 1921 Discussion and fund raising for the purchase of a piano that would eventually be used at numerous community events both in and out of Carseland.

One hundred years of continuous commitment to community development by one organization and its members! Throughout 2012 the Carseland Public Benefit Club is celebrating their Centennial and in preparation has been researching its roots. Founded by 32 Carseland and district women in July 1912, the organization has provided many services to the community, including catering, fund raising and physical labour to build and maintain many of the facilities that were historically and are currently available for the general publics use. In addition, they provided support to Service personnel during the war years by sending supplies and providing moral support by regularly communicating with the boys when they were deployed. During the time I have been a member of the community (almost 25 years now), I was cognizant of the Clubs catering and funding contributions; however, it is only recently as a new member of the organization that I have had the privilege of hearing the stories and learned of the legacy that these women individually and collectively have made. April 1922 - School Board of Trade contacted to put up swings and to make a sand pile for the girls and younger children in the playground. 1924 The Public Benefit Club was authorized to purchase playground equipment and a four member committee organized instalment of the first playground at a cost of $123.35. October 1926 A committee was formed to talk to the School and the Secretary of the School Board about the supervision of the school grounds AND the condition of the school toilets. In November they were advised that a teacher would supervise the grounds during every noon hour. 1929 Moved that a general meeting be called to organize a PTA. 1937 There were no funds available to purchase hampers for the needy so a motion was made that hampers be made from donations from members and other interested people. Nine (9) hampers were given out that year. 1942 Thank you notes were received from Boys overseas. A motion was made that an honour roll of Boys who have joined be put in the Hall. 1947 The Public Benefit Club donated the first set of curling rocks to the Curling Rink. 1954 Responding to a tragic accident at the railway crossing, Public Benefit Club members made a motion and wrote a letter to the CPR requesting signal lights be installed. 1955 Motion that the Public Benefit Club project be the rewiring of the Hall and the installation of a ceiling in the dining room and kitchen of the Hall. 1960 Motion was made to write AMA and request a road sign for Carseland. It was received and put up. 1965 Started collecting the History of Carseland for a book to be published. 1969 A complaint brought to the Club regarding speeding along Railway
and Elevator Street, resulted in speed signs being put up that year. 1978 Letter was written to see if the County would consider fencing the area around the garbage dump to keep it confined. 1987 Letter written to the Department of Highways and to the CPR regarding the deplorable condition of the Railway Cross North of the 4-way stop on Highway 24. 1997 - $600 donation to the Carseland School for playground equipment 2000 Started working on the second History Book. 2002 - $8,000 donated to the Fire Hall to go towards a new Fire Truck. 2008 Donated $40,000 to the Carseland School for playground equipment (Do the math.) 2010 Over $30,000 in funds was raised and the allocation for community projects is currently being finalized A community requires more than the infrastructure and buildings that developers provide. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, many individuals and organizations are needed to see that a community is vibrant and meets its members needs. Throughout their hundred year history, the Carseland Public Benefit Club has played and continues to play a significant role in meeting Carselands physical, social, recreational and ethical needs. This contribution is awesome anywhere and specifically in western Canada because of its relatively short history. More importantly, it is an exciting part of our local heritage and provides a reason to reflect, learn and rejoice in their accomplishments. I am inspired by the women who were and are a part of the organization. They have vision, commitment and dreams of change. Education minister works with Golden Hills to reduce bus times

A new pilot project is coming to the Golden Hills School Division (GHSD) that could see bus times shortened for students. On March 2 Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk announced the partnership between two rural school districts, the other being the Prairie Rose School Division, and the Alberta government. As I travel the province and meet with school boards and parents Im finding out more and more that kids are spending, in some places, up to two hours on a bus, and I dont want that to continue happening. So we are doing pilot projects with a few boards to see what can be done to reduce bus rides, said Lukaszuk. In some areas you cant change that because the distance from home to school is so great that it takes a while for a kid to get there. So we are also looking at introducing technology to buses so kids can at least use that time productively The Rural Ride Time Reduction Project has been proposed for GHSD. Some of the current transportation routes are being redrafted and different options are currently being looked at. One option is to get the group of students that are furthest away and bring them all in on one bus, while having the other students along the route that are closer brought in on another. Another option is to add a route which sort of splits two into three, cutting down the number of students picked up per route, which should effectively
cut down some of the bus time. The actual planning of the routes is still taking place, though Superintendant of Schools for GHSD Bevan Daverne said some of the initial contact to families along the affected routes will take place this week. Golden Hills is a pretty big district geographically and it impacts almost every area of the district. For us it means adding an additional, approximately, 15 bus runs. It impacts just about 130 kids directly and we know that there will be some indirect impact as well, said Daverne. Were quite excited to see how this turns out but we realize at the same time this is temporary, its just from now until the end of the year. For some of the kids that have longer ride times we know that at least from now until the end of the year they get quite a change. Were hoping thats something that will work out well for them, and were sure they are going to feel better about their bus ride. Where this takes us for next year though, we dont know, so we have to wait and see what Alberta Education decides as a result of the pilot. Lukaszuk is also excited to see the project get underway, which begin at the end of the month. The pilot project will take place for a few months, after which Lukaszuk will meet with school boards, parents and, of course, students who have been a part of the project, and find out if there was any measureable benefit from it. If it works, if it actually makes a difference, then well be instituting this province-wide, said Lukaszuk.

The first had them dressed as strawberries and the second as chocolate ice cream cones. The Stage 2/3 group consisting of Brendan Abercrombie, Leah Cavanagh, Jocelyn Gauthier, Addison Hough and James Reagan were dressed as watermelons and their second number as bananas. Going on with the same theme the Stage 2 group, Cole Admason, Serena Clark, Hailey DeGroot, Kaden Gauthier, Isabel Jensen and Ashton Mavor had their feathers flying with the Chicken Dance, and then skated as fish. Two of the more senior skaters, Julia Lomond from Grade 3 and Marissa Dumonceaux from Grade 9, both from Standard School, are in a Star Skate Element program and both girls had solo numbers in the afternoon. Stage 3 skaters Megan Cavanagh, Rosina Christensen, Mya Dumonceaux, Chloe Gregory and Genesis Marucha were the kindergarten to Grade 3 students who performed to Charlie Prides song Burger and Fries and Cherry Pies and also danced on the ice as cans of Orange Crush. Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor All the hours of practicing and hard work came full circle as the Learn to Skate, Canskate and Star Skate students performed their various routines at the Annual Ice Carnival in Standard on March 3. Parents, grandparents and community members alike were brought down memory lane as some of the songs used were not necessarily the music from today. Charlie Prides Burger and Fries and Cherry Pies was definitely a favourite. The youngest skaters of the afternoon ranged in age from 3 to 5 years old, and it was their first year on the ice. Aiden Ellis, Riley Ellis, Etta El-
costuming for the participants were made by parent volunteers and were fabulous. Power skating students Matthew Adamson, Brody DeGroot, TJ Dumonceaux and Brodie Ellis showed off their various stroking skills as pizza and broccoli. Kennedy Adamson and Nicole Ellis are both Star Skate students that started skating at a very early age. Both girls are able to do jumps and spins at competitive levels. Guest dance skaters Sue and Dylan Bullick came from Settler, Alberta to take part in the Carnival and wowed the audience with a ChaCha. The fluidity of their dancing partnership and confidence on the ice was a great example to all of the young skaters. Sonya Kostrup has been Standards Skate Club coach for over the last decade and she also participated in the carnival with her two adult students Christina Adamson and Wendy Barrientos. Kostrup enjoys her students and has also been teaching her young son over the last number of years in this same Canskate program. As always it was a fabulous event and a wonderful opportunity for the students to show off their hard work.
Warriors zap Lightning in two

Mario Prusina Times Editor A pair of quick starts propelled the Wheatland Warriors past the Airdrie Lightning in the SCAHL playoffs. The local double-A bantam team jumped out to a 3-0 lead in Game 1 and 2-0 in Game 2, en route to sweeping the best-of-three series two games to none. We played well in the first game, we did just enough to win after we came out flying, said Warriors head coach Paden Grant. It was the same case in the second game, we came out hard and they let off. We did what we had to do to win. The Warriors entered the playoffs with a couple of weekends off, including a first round bye, which allowed the team to heal some nagging injuries. However, once the puck was dropped in Game 1 on March 1, the Warriors stormed out to a 3-0 lead, before hanging on to a 3-2 win at the Strathmore Family Centre. In Game 2 in Airdrie on March 3, the Warriors took a 2-0 lead just 2:48 into the game, before Airdrie cut the deficit in half with 36 seconds left in the opening period. The Warriors iced the game and the series with a pair of third period goals, on the way to a 4-1 win. In the second game, we played a lot better than we did in the first game, said Grant. Thats something you should do when you play the same teams back-to-back. We figured them out a bit and we played a lot better in the second game. In the first game, we came out to that big lead in the first period and we kind of let them take it to us for a while. We were lucky to come out with the win our goaltender played well and kept us in it. So we learned a lesson for the second game. According to Grant, it was important for the Warriors to ice the series in Game 2, instead of allowing a winnertake-all Game 3. It was huge the way weve been going with injuries, not having to play the extra game, gives you an extra day of rest, said the coach. Not being in an elimination game situation is kind of nice. The Warriors are now preparing to face the Bow Valley Timberwolves in the North Conference Championship. Bow Valley finished the regular season in first place in the North with 50 points, while the second seed Warriors had 44 points.

Bow Valley won the first two games of the season series, before the Warriors won 5-3 in the third game. Theyre a good team weve had battles with them all year, said Grant of Bow Valley. Weve been close to them in the league and weve had a tough battle with them in the provincial (round robin). Weve seen each other enough lately that were both good teams you have to be on your game to beat them. Theyre a quick team theyre skilled and they get on you right away. You cant sit back you have to make quick decisions and move the puck well against them. They have talented players that when they get the chance to put the puck in the net, they do. time), the Warriors will host Game 2 on March 10 (5:45 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre. Game 3, if necessary, will take place March 11 (2:30 p.m.) in Cochrane at the Spray Lakes Sawmills Family Sports Centre. Chiefs host Lightning The Wheatland Chiefs will begin defence of their SCAHL Championship against the Airdrie Lightning. The local midget double-A team hosted the Lightning in Game 1 on March 7 (result not available as of press time), before traveling to Airdrie for Game 2 on March 10 (7:15 p.m.). A total of 26 junior curling teams took part in the junior bonspiel this past weekend, march 3 and 4. Strathmore Spurs U12 Boys A Team finish season in style

Simon Pritchard Strathmore Spurs U12 Boys Strathmore Spurs U12 Boys A Team claimed second place in Tier 4 of the Calgary Minor Soccer League. After a mixed tier 4 competition the final round of games had the Spurs poised to finish anywhere from second to seventh. The final game of the regular season saw the Spurs play the leagues in form team SWU Cyclones. The team were ready to take on the Cyclones with each team member up for the game. The game began with each team trading attacking moves. The team were set in their positions with the coaching staff switching the positions of several players. In Goal Julien Hornsby-Irvine, defence Captain Joss Pritchard, Declan McCartan, Scott Dumur & Jake Friesen. Midfield had Ben Cull stepping up from defence with Luka Nizetic, Jordan Kowbel, Tyson Nakucyj & Ryley Blakney. The forwards were top goal scorer Trey Friesen joined by Jaron & Sean Cuff. The Cyclones had some luck and combined with some poor team marking opened up a 3 nil lead. Luka scored the opening goal for the Spurs before the Cyclones scored again giving them a 4-1 lead at half time. With it looking like all the seasons hard work coming to nothing Coaches Simon Pritchard & Sean Cull gave a morale lifting halt time team talk, telling the team to believe in their own abilities and to continue to work hard. The second half opened with three unanswered Spurs goals from Scott, Joss & Riley, what a comeback! The Cyclones rallied to take the lead again, in previous games the Spurs would have given up but not today. They worked hard and scored the equaliser straight from the kick off with a fantastic team goal, passing the ball to create the goal scored by Trey to make it 5-5. Three more goals from Luka, Jordan & Ryley secured a fantastic comeback win ensuring the team would finish a minimum of fourth. However results from the other games went the teams way. This meant that the Spurs finished second in the league, qualified for the end of season tournament in Edmonton and did Strathmore proud. The spirit, determination and skill shown in the final game was a credit to all the boys and their families. They have achieved every goal set by the coaches this indoor season and raised the standard of soccer in Strathmore to new heights; the nucleus of the team will be representing Strathmore soccer in the outdoor season playing at tier 2/3 level.
Sno-pitch returns to Langdon

Langdon held its second annual sno-pitch tournament March 3 and 4. The event began last year as a fundraiser for the Langdon Community Association. The weather was nicer this year for the tournament, which had six teams registered.

Sharks head to championships

For the first time ever the Strathmore Silver Sharks swim team has swimmers attending the A Provincials/ Age Group Championships swim meet in Calgary March 9 to 11. The Age Group Trials were held in Edmonton Feb. 24 to 26 and Tamara Adamschek, Madison Laycraft and Liam Schoepp will be competing in provincials. Adamschek brought home four gold medals and Laycraft brought home three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals from the trial. The only two ways of qualifying for the Age Group Championships is through time standards or by winning your event at the trials. Its so exciting, Im so proud of them. Theyve just been improving a lot and theyve been going to extra practices outside of the ones I coach just to try and get in the water more because they are just so excited to be there, said head coach Jen Mertz. They work hard at every single practice and come to every one that they possibly can, very dedicated swimmers.
Five swimmers from the Strathmore Silver Sharks attended the Age Group Trials in edmonton, Alberta this past weekend. All swimmers obtained their best times over the course of the meet and obtained numerous top ten finishes. Mertz has been coaching the older group of swimmers, which include Schoepp and Adamschek for the past two years. Assistant coach, Shandell Laycraft is Madisons coach, and also happens to be her mother. The Silver Sharks swim Monday and Wednesday nights from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Competitive swimmers can also swim at the same times on Friday nights. The Masters club swims on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 5:45 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Strathmore finishes electric season!

TaMi leMoine U16A Ringette
The U16A Strathmore Electric Ice finished their ringette season with a trip to the Alberta Provincial Championships, March 2-4 in Lacombe. The top eight teams in the province gathered together to celebrate and compete in the final tournament of the season. The Electric Ice was honored to represent Zone 2 in the competition, and they made their families and coaches proud of their performance and achievements throughout the weekend. The girls played three games, against some of the finest ringette players in their division. In all three games the team suffered from competition jitters and found themselves behind on the scoreboard early in their games. The Ice never gave up and constantly battled to come close, but never quite succeeding, in beating their opponents. The Strathmore team finished their season with three losses on the ice, but they accumulated a lifetime of memories, and the respect and good will of ringette fans throughout the
province. The life lessons the players learned this season will serve them well in whatever future endeavors the girls take on. They have learned to never give up, work hard, play with heart and courage in the face of all obstacles and above all, believe in themselves and their team. They have learned to take defeat with grace and good humor, and celebrate every success, no matter how big or small. The true sign of a great season was not their win / loss record. It was hearing the girls talk in the dressing room after the last game about how they cant wait for next season! The Electric Ice ringette team is a most remarkable group of young woman and athletes. They have given us so much to cheer and laugh and cry about this year. Their coaches and families are so proud of them. They are Brooke Wally McKenzie, Karly Larson, Rhiece Cordes, Taylor Shpyth, Shae Lane, Gabi LeMoine, Meghanne Uptigrove, Hannah Olson, Payge Bratt, Sarah McKinnon, and Tassia Rushford. The Electric Ice has been fortunate to have the talents of their superstar affiliates, Katie Edelmann and Darcie Weir throughout the year, especially this past weekend.
Marco was born in Nice, France on November 1, 1958 and passed away on February 28, 2012. Marco was a loving husband to his wife Sepideh, and the best father ever to Cyrus. He also leaves to mourn his parents Jean Paul and Charlotte Fiori; sister Marion (Sebastien) and their son Henri; cousin Regis; his beloved pet Pikachu; as well as numerous other family members. Marco was a dedicated family man and was truly loved by all. It is with great sorrow and reluctance that we say goodbye to our beloved Chris, adored husband to Heather, wonderful dad to Jim, father-in-law to Mandee, and besotted granddad to Jason and Chloe, the loves of his life. He was also a beloved son-in-law to Jane, much loved third son of Walter and Emily Higgins, of Oswestry, UK, cherished brother to Graham, Roger, and Jeanette, and devoted uncle, brother-in-law, nephew, and friend. Chris was predeceased by his dad Walter in 1995 and his father-in-law Tom in 2009. We immigrated to Canada in 1980 and Chris soon fell in love with the mountains and the great outdoors. His love of animals was strong and he surrounded himself with horses, dogs, and cats on our acreage. He loved to ride horses and his motorbike, and relaxed playing golf or just sitting on the swing in the yard watching the sun go down, and saying how lucky we were. Always ready with a helping hand, he was a gentle soul with the kindest heart who always knew the right thing to say to people. He was, quite simply, the most wonderful man, love of my life and my best friend, and I am grateful for the 35 years we had together. Many thanks to the staff of Unit 94 at the Foothills Hospital who have made the last seven weeks bearable with hugs and encouragement. They all took Chris into their hearts and their grace and kindness is forever appreciated. They fought so hard for him. Chris will be sadly missed by every person who was ever lucky enough to meet him. Black Ice Tween B ringette began Feb. 12 with round one of playoffs with an 8-6 loss against Indus. Goals were scored by Ashley Lecavalier, Bri Olson, Hannah Wylie(2), (Meg Warrack, Bri Olson), Ann Sauve (Meg Warrack), and Meg Warrack. The goal of the game was as Bri Olson was falling and she didnt realize she had scored a goal. Excitement in the stands had the fans on both teams cheering the girls with deafening fevour as Black Ice showed their love of the game on Valentines Day by defeating Indus 8-2. Liquor store armed robbery On Saturday, March 3, at 10:15 p.m., Strathmore RCMP responded to an Armed Robbery at a local liquor store. A lone male suspect wearing a light brown hoody, black jeans, black shoes, purple gloves and balaclava entered the store, pointed a firearm at the clerk and demanded money. An undisclosed amount of money was stolen and the suspect fled in a blue pick-up truck. A stolen blue Dodge Dakota truck was later located in Strathmore, and is believed to have been the truck driven by the Robbery suspect. No one was injured during the robbery. Calgary RCMP Forensic Identification Section and Strathmore RCMP General Investigation Section are assisting in this ongoing investigation. A surveillance camera photo of the suspect is attached for dissemination.
