IOMBA
What is IOMBA ?
The IOMBA is a one year full-time MBA program, taught fully in English in a small size class, with a cutting-edge curriculum at the intersection of business and international public affairs. Located in the heart of international Geneva, the IOMBA campus is in close proximity to the United Nations, international nongovernmental organizations, and the transnational business community.
The IOMBA is designed to : Increase your career prospects by acquiring practical skills and knowledge relevant to international institutions. Teach you to introduce the social sector values of sustainable development, corporate social responsibility, and environmental stewardship back into the private sector. Develop your personal leadership skills in a challenging multicultural environment.

What are the Objectives of the IOMBA ?

The IOMBA was built from the ground up as a multidisciplinary approach to the management of international institutions, and the course curriculum is addresses the core issues that these institutions face. Our curriculum will enable you to learn about : Advanced management tools and practices for intergovernmental, public and non-profit organizations. Organizational and governance models. Management consulting within the highly specialized realm of international development. Fundamental concepts of change management in complex organizations. Risk analysis and decision-making mechanisms specific to international institutions. How to apply project management tools in an international development context. Managing a team in a high-pressure, multicultural environment. Negotiation and communication in an international environment.

Teaching Method
The program is a mixture of lectures, case studies, and practical assignments and taught by internationally recognized scholars and practitioners. Student performance is evaluated in each course module on the basis of individual and group assignments, presentations, and examinations. Group learning is central to the program, and students are placed in small groups for each of the two class semesters. These groups, which are given no official internal hierarchy and are built with a balance of academic, professional, and cultural backgrounds in mind, are one of the key sources of learning during the course of IOMBA. The experience requires that students learn how to manage complex group dynamics, solve disputes, and allocate group resources, all while completing their work under intense time pressure.

Our candidate profile include professionals who : believe that international collaboration is the key to resolving global challenges view partnerships between the public and private sectors as a growing area of mutual opportunity for business and international development are currently working in the private sector and are looking to transfer their skills to a career in the international development or public sectors are looking to acquire skills and experiences that will help them advance into a management role within their current non-profit or international organization.

Part Time Training

Management Development Certificate
The Management Development Certificate (MDC) is a part-time course created to respond to the needs of professionals and practitioners working part or full time in International Organizations. The MDC allows participants to develop their technical, leadership and managerial skills in the context of international organizations, and extend their knowledge of the socio-economic and political context in which they work. The MDC can be completed over one to two academic years, through a flexible and accessible schedule. To complete the MDC, participants must attend six courses of their choice from the twenty-four offered in the IOMBA (see list of courses in the previous sections of this brochure). The MDC is delivered in a modular structure, allowing participants to plan their classes in advance, around their work schedule. Potential applicants are professionals currently working in an international organization, nongovernmental organization, or multinational company who aspire to a managerial position, or existing managers who wish to enhance their skills with a view to taking on greater responsibility in their own organization.

at IOMBA
Executive MBA Specialization in International Organizations
Professionals and managers who are interested in a more traditional Executive MBA Program but who do not wish to give up the opportunity to learn more about International Organizations and their environment can choose this option. The Executive MBA, taught entirely in English, is a two to three year program conducted during weekends (lectures are normally held every other weekend on Friday evenings and Saturday). During the first year, participants undertake both the basic and quantitative subjects of the MBA Program in a 12-course curriculum, while in the second year they specialize in their field of interest. Students interested in the international organizations environment may choose six courses from the curriculum in international management and six from the IOMBA curriculum.

The IOMBA Program on a Part Time Basis

Part time students can choose to attend the IOMBA Program in two, three or four academic years, organizing their academic workload consistently with their interests and work schedule. MDC graduates who want to continue their academic path towards the IOMBA may do so through the regular application process and attend on a part time basis. The six modules of the MDC will be counted toward the IOMBA and the fee proportionally deducted.

through IOMBA
All of our prospective student candidates have the same question on their minds:

"How will the IOMBA help me get a job?"

Most of our students are in a period of transition whether changing sectors, changing job focus or function, or taking on a different level of work within the same organization. To take advantage of the unparalleled opportunity of being located at the world capital of international organizations, there are workshops and seminars with practitioners from international and non-governmental organizations. In this way, students are exposed to a range of organizations, and through sampling a number of different organizational cultures, are helped in their career path.

Career Services Personal Development

We strongly believe that any young professional attending the IOMBA Program must develop their own set of communication and networking skills, as well as their ability to interact and to work effectively in teams. For this reason, we offer: Communication and Networking Skills - IOMBA students develop their ability to communicate effectively in a work environment and to make professional presentations in public. Extensive practice is ensured through the large number of presentations undertaken in class and networking activities throughout the year. Effective Team working - The ability to manage group dynamics and to facilitate and lead teams is an essential characteristic of an IOMBA graduate. Continuous assistance is given to develop positive group dynamics. Seminars, interactive group sessions and individual help are intended to help participants to recognize their behaviour in a group situation IOMBA Career Services delivers personalized, tailormade assistance to each IOMBA student through periodic one-on-one meetings that take place throughout the 10-month academic portion of the program in order to provide the guidance, tools and resources for students to conduct a thorough search of practicums and employment opportunities in their chosen sector. Cultivating social networks and developing contacts with international organizations and NGOs further help students. Additionally, career topics are integrated into the regular IOMBA curriculum and include an overview of the International Organization (IO) field, clarification of career direction and effective communication skills. However, the ultimate responsibility of finding a practicum lies with the student.

Practicums
The IOMBA Program requires a three month practicum after completion of the academic requirements in June. This practicum accounts for 20% of the final grade, provides an opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience applying their theoretical knowledge, and developing further their professional networks. Practicums are an invaluable entry into the international organizations system potentially leading to full-time employment. However, the majority of UN practicums are unpaid, competitive and often interns cannot be hired directly into a job upon completion of a practicum. Students should therefore begin to target their preferred practicum early on during the academic program and come prepared to cover the costs of their living expenses during their practicum period. Should a student go straight into a job following the academic program, they can use the first three months on the job to prepare a detailed practicum report that demonstrates the integration of theory into practice.

Alumni Network
The IOMBA Alumni Networks 200+ members are fast building a presence in international organizations as well as the private sector. The Alumni Network works through web-based, on-line social network facilities, events and information exchanges to introduce the new IOMBA students into the organizations and companies where IOMBA graduates work. The Alumni Network often circulates vacancies ahead of the formal recruitment process, and helps with introductions.

University of Geneva HEC International Organizations MBA (IOMBA) Admissions Office Chemin de la Voie-Creuse, 16 CH-1202 Geneva - Switzerland

All applicants must complete the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). As several of the program's core courses require a high level of quantitative and analytical skills, a high GMAT/GRE score will enhance your chances of being admitted, but a high score does not guarantee admission into the program and a lower score does not preclude admission. Please note that official results must be sent directly to the IOMBA admissions office from the Pearson VUE (a business of NCS Pearson, Inc. who administers the GMAT test). If you have already taken the GMAT, we encourage you to enclose a photocopy of your score report with your application package. We will accept GMAT scores that are up to five years old. Our institution code for reporting your GMAT score is 651-QT-72. The International Organizations MBA program is taught in English. Consequently, a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score, no older than 2 years, is required of all applicants whose native language is not English, or who did not receive an undergraduate or graduate degree from an institution in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand. A score of 600 on the paper-based exam, 250 on the computer-based exam or 100 on the internetbased exam is required. Informational materials are available from the Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541. You may also request materials via their website at www.ets.org. Our institution code for reporting your TOEFL score is 0771. You may also submit a IELTS score instead of the TOEFL.

A quality MBA education represents a significant investment of time, effort and money, both on the part of the school and that of the student. HEC Genve and the University of Geneva contribute to make this investment affordable through our comparatively low tuition fees and through direct support in the form of scholarships. Our support notwithstanding, participants are asked to contribute their share to financing the costs of study. Candidates of the IOMBA program are encouraged to evaluate their finances, and prepare for both expected and unexpected expenditures through savings, debt-reduction, and a more modest student lifestyle. To help you estimate financial obligations required to attend the IOMBA program the following estimated budget is provided for the academic year indicated. The budget consists of both educational and living expenses for the duration of the academic program. If you intend to stay in Geneva for your practicum period, then you should allow for the additional expenses . Tuition and fees are subject to change each year.

Our Partners

Association of MBAs (AMBA)

The Association of MBAs (AMBA) is the international impartial authority on postgraduate business education. The number of MBA qualifications available worldwide is now in the thousands, but only a small percentage of these achieve accreditation, as the AMBAs rigorous assessment criteria ensure that only highest calibre programs achieve the accreditation award. The AMBA accreditation focuses on individual programs rather than whole institutions. This unique, in-depth and detailed approach means that the highest standards of teaching, faculty and student interaction are guaranteed the accreditation. At present there are 177 schools accredited worldwide. The IOMBA is fully accredited by the AMBA and was reaccredited in 2011.

Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA)

The Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA) comprises 34 member schools in North America, Asia and Europe dedicated to the improvement of professional education in international affairs and the advancement thereby of international understanding, prosperity, peace, and security. APSIA members work to promote excellence in the education of international affairs professionals worldwide by sharing information and ideas among member schools, with other higher education institutions, the international affairs community, and the general public. APSIA member schools are the primary sources of education for international affairs professionals in their respective countries. These schools prepare students for the global workplace of the 21st Century by combining multidisciplinary, policy-oriented, intercultural studies with career development. The IOMBA Program is an affiliate member of APSIA.

The smallest of BIG cities

The smallest of BIG cities

Geneva's high standards and quality of life are legendary, with its low crime rate, extensive and punctual public transport system, social and cultural resources and surrounded by great natural beauty. As a result, Geneva consistently ranks among the top cities in the world to live. Mercer Human Resource Consulting's 2011 index of "Most Liveable Cities" places Geneva at number 3 behind Zurich at number 2. Both cities place Switzerland at the top in terms of safety, quality of living, and infrastructure.

These organizations paved the way for an impressive list of UN specialized agencies and other international organizations to settle in Geneva, including the World Health Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the International Telecommunications Union, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Organization for Migration and the World Trade Organization. Among the non-governmental organizations headquartered in Geneva, many are working in the humanitarian field, such as the World Organization against Torture; those focusing on the environment, such as the World Wide Fund for Nature and the World Conservation Union; and those devoted to the links between trade, business and social issues, such as the World Economic Forum.

The city of Geneva is home to no fewer than 20 intergovernmental organizations, 190 nongovernmental organizations and over 150 diplomatic missions to the United Nations. Geneva hosts twice as many international conferences as New York. Important landmarks in the history of Geneva include the International Committee of the Red Cross (1863), the League of Nations (1919), and the International Labor Organization, and the European offices of the United Nations in 1946.

Why Choose the University of Geneva

Main University Campus - HEC Geneva Photo: Alain Saunders - blueBOX Marketing

From the time it was founded in 1559 by Jean Calvin to the recent discovery by University astrophysicists of the first extrasolar planets, the University of Geneva has continued to grow and develop with its long-standing tradition of excellence in an international milieu. Today, with more than 15,000 students, we are the second largest university in Switzerland, and the first in terms of grants received from the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences is the largest of the University's faculties, and the most multidisciplinary, with a wide variety of joint degree courses. The Faculty's guiding objective is to provide an education for future leaders and executives that is underpinned by a humanistic approach. In terms of the number of publications, the faculty is first in Switzerland, both in the social sciences as well as in the fields of economics and business.

The Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences

The multicultural environment in Geneva is mirrored at the University of Geneva. A third of our student body comes from abroad, and we pursue a policy of fostering the mobility of students, faculty and researchers, and establishing strategic partnerships through the creation of European as well as international education and research programs, all of which contribute to the truly international character of our university. The international backdrop of Geneva gives the University a unique advantage and places it in the forefront of the world scene. As a founding member of the Geneva International Academic Network (GIAN) whose goal is to facilitate collaboration between researchers and international bodies in promoting peace, human rights, equitable social relationships, and sustainable development, the University has continually worked to develop contacts with both international and nongovernmental organizations, a network which we are happy to provide for the benefit of our IOMBA students and alumni.

In 1994, the Department of Management Studies became HEC Genve (Hautes Etudes Commerciales Genve), and remains an integral part of the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences. As the University's Business School, HEC takes charge of teaching and research in all areas of business and management. HEC Genve has forged strong ties with the business sector in Geneva, collaborating with many of the multinational companies based in Geneva. It has built itself a solid reputation as an institution that responds to the international and local business needs of management development and training in Geneva, offering a rich palette of course offerings, ranging from undergraduate through doctoral studies, as well as executive education courses.
