I should like to thank everyone who has made that possible, both within the unit and from without. What was done these past two weeks will serve as only a mere beginning. We have learned a great deal about CAP aviation and how to put it into practice. As I prepare the materials for the 2007 Holiday Party, I am left with a very warm feeling inside. We have accomplished a lot this year.

MY SQUADRON, YOUR SQUADRON & OUR SQUADRON

What is it that keeps CAP alive? What is it that drive and nourishes the marrow of the local CAP Unit? What is it that makes a unit successful? This is a series of questions that has occupied my mind these last few weeks. I should say that it should occupy all our minds, for it is in the address of those questions that our unit will continue to grow and prosper. First of all, I think the primary starting point is for people to take ownership of their unit. To refer to it as My Squadron. As a commander I often steer away from that sort of rhetoric out of fear people might think me less than humble. But, I submit that it has to be MY UNIT to each of us. That is what turns it into being OUR UNIT. This idea came to me while watching cadets practicing their drill at Kingsville. It struck me that an element works at its best when each of its members is strong in their fundamentals. Thus, when an order is given, the greater part of the unit gathers its precision from the strength of the individual. Each of us must be like that to OUR UNIT. Strong CAP Officers and Cadets are the driving force of Strong Units. The key is an effective staff. Each of us taking our part of the unit and working in concert with each other to make it happen. Personnel and Admin Officers keeping us centered in record keeping, Public Affairs Officers keeping us informed, Cadet Programs Officers doing their best to build that area and Air Ops organizing the flying. Our next big tasks will be in the areas of COMM and GROUND TEAM. 1st Lt Mike Garmon leading the one and cadets attending the Ground Team School leading the other. -SEMPER VIGILANS!

Lt Col Brooks Cima of The Texas Wing

On Un-funded Missions and the Numbers they Generate
Lt Col Brooks Cima, CAP Texas Wing Director of Emergency Services Texas WingI am very pleased that many of you are doing un-funded training that has always been the core of our volunteer organization! In order to maximize that training, please follow these guidelines: 1. In order to get a training mission number for ground team training you must submit an Ops Plan to me two weeks in advance of your activity. Be sure to include training objectives and safety information in your plan as well as local medical facilities. Once I have reviewed the plan, I enter a request in WMIRS and send the plan to the Wing Commander. The NOC approval and Wing Commander approval generally takes 3-4 days. Please use the attached template for your OPs plan. 2. Un-funded aircrew training for a C mission should be submitted in the same way as ground training. If you want an un-funded B mission (additional insurance) you must submit six weeks in advance to meet our approval window and the 30 day Air Force requirement. 3. Other Wing-scheduled training, such as the upcoming AFRCC course, may be issued a Texas Wing training number. This number may be used for prerequisite and task accomplishment but not mission sorties. Your tasks should be signed off by a Texas Wing Evaluator. Check the list BEFORE you train. 4. Other non-CAP training, such as FEMA, Department of Homeland Security, etc. may be considered for a Texas Wing training number and prerequisite/ task sign-offs. In order to accomplish this you must submit a course description or training objective list from the instructor or sponsoring organization. Submit this and your SQTR to myself or one of the Assistant Training Officers and we will do our best to match up some of the training objectives with CAP tasks. Please keep in mind this only includes classes that are not normally a part of CAP curriculum/requirements. Since any of the training entered in WMIRS requires the Project Officer to enter sorties, work with your Group or Wing staff to secure WMIRS access prior to requesting an un-funded training number. Paperwork (sign-in sheets, 104s, 109s, ORM, vehicle sign-in sheets, etc.) must have the first page of the CAPF 115 attached as a cover sheet and the package should be sent to Wing HQ for filing within 72 hours of activity completion. Please submit a simple list of the training completed so that we can keep a running list of the unfunded training completed in order to lobby for more training funds in the future. If you have questions about any of these guidelines or requirements, please feel free to contact me.

GROUP V Commander Urges Encampment Attendance

Lt Col Eddy Billman, CAP Commander Group V San Antonio, TexasThe winter Cadet Encampment is coming soon. Past winter encampment data shows us that although there are only a few folks signed up at this point (original deadline), many more will apply at the last minute, some even showing up unannounced. Since we still expect about 100 basic cadets to attend, and less than half have applied, that means quite a few applications are expected. That is good in one way, but very bad in another. The staff, all of which are sacrificing their entire XMas break, are put into a terrible crunch pulling this off with such bad data. They need to commit to beds, food, equipment, etc. To wait till the last minute is unfair, unprofessional, and makes the staff's lives miserable. I am asking you to PLEASE find out who in your units intend to apply and nudge them strenuously to minimize the delay. We owe this to the encampment staff. According to this listing, many units do not have any first-time, or Basic Cadets attending. I encourage you to push hard to have at least one eligible Cadet attend from your unit, if you don't already have one. The stories, enthusiasm, and information they will bring back to your program is invaluable. It is that important. And, of course, encampment is necessary for the Mitchell. If you have transportation or money issues holding back Cadets that you know should be attending, bring it up for discussion. We can't solve problems we don't know about. Remember, while not downplaying the summer encampment, the winter encampment is a whole bunch closer to all of us than Paris Texas in the summer. And for the Valley, Victoria, and Corpus Christi, it is a very big difference in distance. I know that some Cadets are going to attend the very excellent Texas Wing Ground Team School in Brownsville during this time, but that doesn't account for all of this. I appreciate your help to tighten this up.

Cadet Philip Lozano earns Wright Brothers Award

By Major J. E. Carrales, CAP Corpus Christi Comp Squadron The Corpus Christi Composite Squadron would like to honor its latest Wright Brothers Award cadet, Philip Lozano. Cadet Lozano has been a very dedicated and active cadet. Cadet Lozano joined the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program on 29 June 2006 following a segment run on Corpus Christi CBS Television affiliate KZTV ACTION 10 NEWS. The segment, which starred then 1st Lt Sandy Phelps, ran during the 5 oclock hour on that station and, two hours latter, Major J.E. Carrales welcomed Cadet Candidate Philip Lozano and his family to the evening meeting. I can remember it quite well, said Major Carrales, the doorbell ran at the Memorial Army Reserve Center and I greeted the family. Cadet Lozano was the first in a new wave of cadets. In many ways, continued Major Carrales, Cadet Lozano represented a fresh start. The cadet program had languished for a while and Lozano and Cadet Villarreal were pretty much all we had. Lozanos family has also been a great boon to the squadron. He is the son of Salvador and Monica Lozano, two very patriotic and community minded volunteers. In fact, Monica Lozano, a.k.a. 2d Lt Lozano, joined the unit and has been a great boost to the units programs. That said, the climb up the Airman ranks was not an easy one. It is difficult said Major J. E. Carrales, for CAP Cadets to prosper in a condition where there are too few cadets. Ours was a re-building unit. This made it very difficult for Cadet Lozano to get the full experience, however, with support from his family and the unit he was able to overcome this by going forth and partaking of Texas Wing and neighboring unit opportunities. Cadet Lozano accomplished his leadership training by attending the 2006 Texas Wing Encampment at Camp Swift, Bastrop, TX graduating on 31 December 2006. In addition, he also accompanied CC-CAP Officers to training activities at Brownsville and Victoria. He also attended the Group V Airman Leadership School on October 2007. In September of 2006, he represented the unit at a ceremony at Sherrill Park in Corpus Christi, Texas after which he and other cadets traveled to Victoria, Texas to participate in Cadet Orientation Flights. In terms of Emergency Services, he is a natural ELT hunter. He has several times been the discoverer of well hidden ELTs and is quite proficient with equipment of all times. In early-2007 Cadet Lozano was appointed the Cadet Advisory Council SeconCadet Lozano (right) accompadary representative to the Group V CAC rising to the Primary position not long after. In nies cadets in placing a wreath on April he served as part of a delegation to the 2007 Texas Wing Conference in Austin, Memorial Day 2007 at the Rose Texas were he sat on the Texas Wing CAC for its deliberations. He continues to serve as Hill Cemetery in Corpus Christi. the units CAC representative. His service to the CAC and other training prompted unit leadership to recommend him as the 2007 Air Force Associations Outstanding Cadet of the Year. This award is given to the most outstanding cadet in the unit based on recommendation. A medal is issued and the cadet is authorized to wear the given award. Cadet Lozano is also a volunteer with the Coastal Bend Chapter of the American Red Cross and assisted in flood relief efforts in mid-2007. He was praised by former CAP National Commander Brig General Richard Anderson for his efforts. At that time he also was give the opportunity to represent the Unit to the Mayors Committee for Veterans Affairs. The prestigious position allows him to serve as a direct liaison to the Corpus Christi Mayors office as well as to serve as weather vein of future cadet activity in support of local veterans. The Wright Brothers Award is given for cadets who are successful in completing their training as Cadet Airmen and are poised for service as Cadet NCO and the responsibilities that come with those ranks. Cadet Lozano was awarded the honor on 13 November 2007 Cadet Lozano inspects an Aircraft Tail Number at award number 8647. He is now eligible for the rank of Cadet Staff the Victoria DSAR standing area. Sergeant and will be bestowed with that rank at the Corpus Christi Composite Squadron Holiday Dinner on 11 December 2007. Well done Cadet Lozano, we look forward to writing an article about your Billy Mitchell Award which, is such success continues, is the shape of things to come. 5

By Major Joe Ely Carrales, CAP Corpus Christi, Texas We are entering the home stretch for 2007 in general and the last leg of planning for the 2007 Corpus Christi Composite Squadron Holiday Party. The activity will be on 11 December 2007 at the Longhorn Steak and Ale restaurant. 2d Lt Monica Lozano has generated a fine invitation that will be finalized and mail, of necessary, on the 4th of December. Major Carrales is also preparing a program that will serve as an informal yearbook based on the accomplished goals of 2007. Major Fidel Alvarado is also confirming Mr. Fred Segundo of CC International Airport as be guest speaker for the evening. All members are invited and we may have a few other guests that are friends of the unit that can dine with us and enjoy our company. As has been stated before, the only official activity for that evening will be to outline goals by quarter for 2008. The last meeting for 2007 will be 18 December 2007. Regular Squadron activities for 2007 will be closed after that date save for any OPERATONAL training activities, such as flight training or actual CAP missions. Activities at Kingsville will continue until 20 December 2007 to coincide with end of the 1st Semester of Kingsville ISDs 20072008 school year. The next regular meeting following the 18 of December 2007 will be 8 January 2008. Group V - Airmen Leadership School (ALS)

C/MSgt Brian Rankin and Photos submitted by C/MSgt Brian Rankin and SM Nancy Kerr SAN ANTONIO, Texas - On 26 Oct, 39 cadets from across Texas attended the Airman Leadership School (ALS), at the Lackland Squadron, located on Kelly USA, San Antonio, Texas. The purpose of ALS is to provide airman with a better understanding of leadership. ROOM, ATTENTION! These words officially started a weekend of leadership, learning, and fun for the Civil Air Patrol cadets. The first thing the cadets did upon arriving at the Airman Leadership School was check-in and have their bags inspected for any contraband. After the bag inspection, all the cadets put their stuff in their room, and it was time for the first of many classes. Cadets learned how to take care of their uniforms and then had to put their knowledge to the test as it was time for inspection. Following inspection, a group leadership project was held. Day two dawned bright and early with reveille at six a.m. Cadets were rushed downstairs for early-morning physical training (PT), followed by alternating class and drill until lunch. Once lunch was over, the alternating schedule of class and drill continued until dinner. Following dinner, there was one more class then it was time for two more group leadership projects which the cadets did great on, and then it was time for the staff vs. cadets to a game of kickball. After the staff victory, cadets then participated in a PT competition and settled in for the night. Day three dawned early again with an earlymorning PT session. Cadets took showers, ate breakfast, and then it was time for clean-up. Cadets had one hour to clean the whole building for white-gloved inspection. After passing inspection, cadets then prepared for graduation. Graduation ran smoothly and the new generation of leaders went home. Three cadet awards were given for the Most Improved, Extreme Challenge Award, and Warrior Cadet. The Cadets who won the awards were C/Amn Christopher Ganson, C/Amn Shadrick Adams, and C/Amn Tucker Tripp respectively. Special thanks to the Warhawk gym on Lackland AFB TX, for use of the showers, to the Lackland mess hall staff for feeding the cadets and staff, to the Lackland AFB TX bus drivers who drove us to those locations, and to all staff of the school who made this airman leadership school a resounding success. TEXAS WING GROUND TEAM SCHOOL DEADLINE EXTENDED

Major Sean Crandall, CAP The application deadline for the Texas Wing Ground Team School has been extended to December 15, 2007. Dont miss the chance to be part of some of the most challenging and rewarding training CAP has to offer. The course will provide an excellent opportunity to experience practical CAP ground operations training in a real world environment. The basic course will cover training necessary to achieve GTM 3 & 2 while the advanced course will focus on GTM 1 and GT Leader. Additional wilderness survival, leadership, and communications training will also be provided. The training will be held in one of the toughest environments in Texas and will be entirely in the field with little to no creature comforts. Please see the attached OPS PLAN for application details. Applications can be e-mailed to the project officer to reserve a slot. Group IV to host Squadron leadership School, Corporate Learning Course and Unit Commanders Course

Communications Trainings Begins anew at Kingsville

Kingsville, Texas Cadets at Kingsville have been busy in all aspects of training. Regular readers of this almanac will recall that promotions have been steady as the new wave of cadets move up the CAP ladder. Regular Readers will also recall that Cadets have been pulling duty at Memorial Middle School. This is merely an exercise designed to teach GES and COMM with a hands on experience. The first element of this is to teach cadets keep a log and practice CAP communications procedures. We use secure channels, said Major Carrales, but still we must be careful not to be sloppy in what we say. Because anyone with $100 and access to Radio Shack can listen in.

Cadets got some experience with keeping a mission log and how the CAPF 110 Air/Ground or Point to Point Log works. Whats more than that, they also learned a bit about why it is important.

While cadets need work on filling out the mission log, continued Major Carrales, it seems that is the sort of proficiency that is reach by doing. And they will be doing a lot!
