ABOUT US
The Eastern Iowa Cadet Squadron currently consists of more than 40 members, of which more than half are cadets. Our cadets are comprised of both home and public school students, with ages ranging from 12 to 18. The cadets study leadership, aerospace, and participate in physical training and community service. The squadron is also comprised of senior members, which support the cadet program and participate in Emergency Services and a professional development program. The squadron meets weekly for the cadets to receive both lecture and hands on learning. In addition, we have Emergency Services overnighters that we affectionately call Camp Rocky. During Camp Rocky, cadets and seniors receive classroom and hands on Emergency Services training. We also participate in CAP statewide activities, called SAREX (Search and Rescue Exercise). During a SAREX, we may travel to an airport a couple of hours away and be tasked to perform a practice mission. Both Camp Rocky and the SAREXs take place on a weekend. They help prepare us for when we are called to a real ES mission.

Welcome to the Spring issue of the EICS newsletter. We are proud to share the accomplishment of our members during the Winter of 2009 and Spring of 2010 as well as the most relevant news of the season. THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

Supporting a Great Cause -- Donating to Civil Air Patrol!
The 78th Cadet Squadron sincerely thanks everyone who provides financial support to the Squadron as well as those who volunteer their time and effort. It takes a lot of work to keep things running on a volunteer basis. None of the annual dues that members pay to CAP National Headquarters come back to the Squadron, and we do not assess an annual fee from our members. Likewise, our cadets are not obliged to wash cars or sell candy bars or magazines to raise funds. This is possible because of the generous support of benefactors who donate to our Squadron so that we can focus on training for and carrying out our important mission-related activities. If you are considering a donation, there is no finer organization than Civil Air Patrol. If you have any questions about making a donation, please contact Maj Bob Benson at robertbenson2088@msn.com. It is possible to donate to Civil Air Patrol via the United Way, and some employers will even offer a matching contribution! If you wish to be a sponsor, please contact our public affairs office in the contact us section at www.ncria078.org

Urban Directional Finding (UDF) Teams training

The Civil Air Patrol Emergency Services missions are conducted by skilled members that undergo training and become qualified in different areas. Members of the EICS conducted during this year a UDF team training. During this training, members learn and exercise techniques that will allow them to search and locate downed aircraft and other missions that could save the life of a pilot.

"Leaders aren't born they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that's the price we'll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal." Vince Lombardi

On 1 February 2009 , the International Cospas-Sarsat Organization terminated processing of distress signals emitted by 121.5 MHz Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs). Cospas-Sarsat System ( U.S. included) will continue processing emergency signals transmitted by 406 MHz ELTs. These 5 Watt digital beacons transmit a much stronger signal, are more accurate, verifiable and traceable to the registered beacon owner (406 MHz ELTs must be registered by the owner in accordance with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulation at www.beaconregistration.noaa.gov). Registration allows the search and rescue authorities to contact the beacon owner, or his or her designated alternate by telephone to determine if a real emergency exists. Therefore, a simple telephone call often solves a 406 MHz alerts without launching costly and limited search and rescue resources, which would have to be done for a 121.5 MHz alert. For these reasons, the search and rescue community is encouraging aircraft owners to consider retrofit of 406 MHz ELTs or at a minimum, consider the purchase of a handheld 406 MHz Personal Locator Beacon ( PLB ) which can be carried in the cockpit while continuing to maintain a fixed 121.5 MHz ELT mounted in the aircraft's tail. Protect yourself and your passengers and Get the Fix Switch to 406. Pilots flying aircraft equipped with 121.5 MHz ELTs will have to depend on pilots of over flying aircraft or ground stations monitoring 121.5 to hear and report distress alert signals, transmitted from a possible crash site.
