Rabe, Mariflor Lesson Title: What is it with Plant Cells?

Topic: Plant cell types according to cell wall characteristics Time Allotment: 40-45 Minutes Target Learners: Second Year High School Students with background on cell structure and function Objectives: At the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. Identify parenchyma, sclerenchyma, and collenchyma cells and the characteristics of each type of cell/tissue. 2. Compare and contrast the physical and functional characteristics of the parenchyma, sclerenchyma, and collenchyma cells/tissues. 3. Evaluate a given plant if it belongs to any of the three plant cell/tissue type. 4. Improve their plant sectioning skills, ie, properly section a given plant part to obtain the desired plant cell 5. Handle and focus the microscope better than the previous sessions which can be seen through their accuracy in locating the desired view of the specimen. 6. Appreciate the importance of structure-function relationship. Materials: LCD Projector Laptop Microscopes Cartolina for each group IKI Solution Celery Stalks Leaf petiole Red Kidney Bean Apple Sectioning Blade/Razor Blade Glass slides Cover Slips Water dropper Water Potato Apple Pear Other possible specimens

Introduction Activity: Which is Which? 1. Boxes of three types of materials will be presented in class or in groups. The students will then be asked to a. build a tower and b. observe if water permeates through the materials easily. After the observation, the teacher will ask on how is the material and the structure of the boxes relevant to the two conditions. 2. Ask the students how the activity is related to the function of a cell membrane and a cell wall and what they do to a cell. Materials: Boxes of different materials Time Allotment: 5 minutes

Lesson Proper Exploratory Activity: Microscope Work a. The class will be divided to three or four groups (depending on the availability of materials). b. Materials will be distributed to the groups, including the worksheet. Cartolinas will be posted on the board containing the following blank table.

Specimen Characteristics Cells (drawing/sketch) Shape of cells Cell Arrangement Cell Wall Organelles Present

Potato/Tomato/Bell Pepper

Leaf Petiole/Celery/Ipomea

Pear Grit/Apple/Vascular Tissue Cells

Questions: 1. What are the physical characteristics of the cells of 1. potato tuber 2. celery petiole/leaf petiole 3. pear 2. What can you observe about the cell wall(s) of the given specimens? 3. What are the possible functions of these cells given the cell wall characteristics? Materials: cartolina, microscope, specimens, glass slides, cover slip, water, IKI, toluidine blue, worksheets Time Allotment: 15 minutes Discussion Proper Activity: Observation of Data and Class Discussion Questions: 1. What are these cells called? 2. What are the function of these cells? 3. What are the subtypes of these cell groups? Materials: cartolina, LCD, laptop Time Allotment: 10 minutes Elaboration Activity: Class Discussion Questions: 1. What are the importance of these cells in plants? 2. What will happen if the structure of these cells cell walls are modified? 3. How can you relate these changes in your everyday experiences? Materials: Laptop, LCD Evaluation

Activity: Quiz Specimens of different cell types will be projected on the screen. The students will have to identify what type of cell each specimen has. Questions: 1. What are the type of cells in the following specimens? 2. What are the function of these cells for the specimens? 3. What would happen if: 1. The cells of potato become sclerenchyma? 2. The cells of the celery stalk become parenchyma? 3. The cells of the pear pulps become collenchyma? Materials: laptop, lcd, paper and pen Time Allotment: 10 minutes
