A psychologist was interested in self-esteem in 12 and 13 year olds.

She gave a Self Esteem test at the beginning of the academic year to 60 children selected at random from grade 7 at a local school. The children then received individualised social skills lessons for the next ten weeks. At the end of that period she gave the self esteem test again. Using the file Set 1 2011-12.sav answer the following questions.

A. Is number of hours of intervention is related (therefore corelate) to the extent of improvement in the self esteem scores? (word)

B. Taking only pre-test scores into consideration, ascertain if there are gender related trends in self esteem of the students. For BOTH the above questions do the following:

1. Formulate the null and alternate hypotheses 2. Identify the variables and their level of measurement. 3. Name the statistical test she should perform to test the hypothesis, state the test assumptions. 4. Using SPSS run the test/s 5. Report the results along with relevant descriptive statistics and describe the conclusions that can be drawn from the results.

2. In a study on stress in people who have diagnosis of substance dependence, researchers developed a scale to measure their levels of stress. Higher score on the test meant higher levels of stress. Data was collected from 60 participants (20 alcohol dependence, 20 cocaine dependence and 20 tobacco dependence) randomly selected from chosen public hospitals in Mumbai. For each type of dependence, half the numbers were those who were taking substance less than 5 years and half of them were more than 10 years. The following were the objectives of the project

1. To compare the three types of substance dependence groups on their stress.

2. To compare the less experienced and more experienced substance dependence clients in terms of the level of stress they experience. Using the file Set 2 2011-12.sav answer the following questions

For each of the objectives do the following: 1. Formulate the null and alternate hypotheses 2. Identify the variables and their level of measurement. 3. Name the statistical test to be performed to test the hypothesis, state the test assumptions. 4. Using SPSS run the test/s 5. Report the results along with relevant descriptive statistics and describe the conclusions that can be drawn from the results.
