Dril l s for VT Table Tennis Team

Forehand to Forehand (Final Objective: Hit 100 each without making a mistake, no need to kill each shot, control is more important as well as the proper stroke). Start trying to make sequence of 20,40,60,etc. Backhand to Backhand. Both players in BH corner (Final Objective: Hit 100 each without making a mistake, no need to kill each shot, control is more important as well as the proper stroke). Start trying to make sequence of 20,40,60,etc. Backhand to Backhand down the line, one player in BH corner, the other in the FH corner. Loop Forehand to Backhand for 15 minutes each person (Backhand blocks. Final Objective: 20 Loops/Blocks in a Row without a mistake). Falkenberg Drill for 5 minutes each person (Final Objective: Consistency and Improvement of Foot Work): See Diagram. 3rd Ball Attack for 5 minutes each person (Serve short, return with push, open up with a loop). 5th Ball Attack for 5 minutes each person (After the 3rd ball, the serve blocks, and on the 5th ball the aggressor goes for a kill shot with forehand). Push Practice, BH to BH (Final Objective: 50 pushes in a row, trying to keep the ball short and low) Push Practice, alternating sides, pushing with BH and FH. Smashing against lobs (Final Objective: Not mess up any of the smashes and try to place the smashes so the defender has a time returning the smash). Forehand loops against backspin on serve for each person (Start on the receive position, server places a long backspin serve on the forehand, move to loop and return to backhand corner). Forehand loops against chops; instead of lobs the defender returns long chops to the backhand of the server. Server has to use adequate footwork to move to a forehand position for looping. 5 minutes each person Forehand loops cross-court (diagonal) and down the line (parallel) from BH corner, while the 2nd person blocks to your BH. 5 minutes each person.

Serve/Return practice at the end of the session, 5 minutes each person. Forehand Loop against Topspin. 5 minutes each person. Key points (Reference: Sean ONeills website):
o o o o o o o o o o o This stroke is more horizontal. Looping against underspin is more vertical. Again, try to get your feet into correct position before you begin to backswing, on this stroke it is more of a trunk turn. Normally the contact point is at the top of the bounce, but you can wait for the ball to drop slightly if you need more time to setup for the shot. Make contact on the top of the ball with a closed racket swing forward with a grazing motion. Keep a relaxed wrist . Use only one swing, do not swing up then over, swing in a single direction, back to front. Speed is more important than spin (the reverse is true when looping underspin). This is a controlled stroke; steadiness is the key on this shot. It is important to use 3/4 to full swing and use the body. Build up the power on consecutive loops, shot after shot (1,2,3...). Attempt to add sidespin to both the inside and outside of the ball for added difficulty in returning these types of loops. Continue to use your free arm for balance-this is very important. Shift your weight forward and in the direction you are hitting the ball. At the the end of the stroke return to ready or 'home" position so you are able to hit the next shot.
