Career Services Department Devils Advocates Position Description 2012-2013


Basic Qualifications Rising Second Year Student (second semester First Year Student), Second Fifth year student. No Sixth year students are eligible. Minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average. Available to serve the entire year. In good academic and judicial standing with the University. General Statement The Advocate is an integral part of the Universitys Career Services Department. As staff members, Advocates are committed to the important role of assisting the enhancement and development of their Protg as well as supporting the initiatives set forth by the Career Services Department. Due to Advocates extensive contact with USciences students, they serve as liaisons and resources. Advocates promote the integration of all aspects of campus life and assist in establishing an environment which is supportive of the educational objectives at University of the Sciences. Expectations and guidelines of the mentoring program must be clearly explained to the Protgs. Advocates are reminded they serve as a role model through their campus experience. Clear and regular communication between the Advocate and the Protg; the Advocate and the Career Services Department is critical to the success of the Advocates role. Advocates are best able to develop a rapport with others with a dimension of understanding, recognition of individual differences, and acceptance of all students. To further develop effectiveness with the program, the ability to listen is an essential attribute. Consistency, sensitivity, and empathy must be evident in an Advocates interactions with fellow Advocates, Protgs, and various constituents of the University. The Advocate position provides an opportunity for service to the University of the Sciences community. Specific Responsibilities I. General Skills in Role a. Adhere to the mission and values of the Career Services Department. b. Through the Advocate Board, Advocates will serve as point people for different responsibilities: i. Contributing to Walk-in Hour and Take 5, ii. Contributing to Marketing iii. Contributing to Planning Special Programs c. Meet with Career Counselor twice a month or more, if necessary. d. Gain understanding of and improve upon Organizational and Time Management skills. i. Meet as a group once a month. Each Advocate will co-conduct a group meeting, including creation of a meeting agenda. ii. Follow-up on tasks appropriately and timely. e. Enhance Communication/Active Listening Skills. f. Experience Project Planning. g. Enjoy working with others. h. Ability to work independently and in a group.

II. Contributing to Walk-In Hour and Take 5 a. Support walk-in hour by reviewing cover letters, resumes, and answering general career inquiries. b. Serve as a liaison for Career Services Department around campus, especially to the student population to promote awareness. i. Take 5 is to provide quick information on the following topics: Cover Letters and Resumes Representing You Tell Me about Yourself Understanding Professional Dress Building Your Experience Web Resources Contributing to Marketing a. Brainstorm and implement marketing strategies for various Career Services Department programs to connect students with resources. b. Implement new programs: Advocates Mentoring Program, Mock Tails, etc. c. Communicate information about Career Services to Faculty. d. Serve as a liaison to campus clubs and organizations. e. Promote and attend programs sponsored by the Career Services Department. f. Use various outlets to promote initiatives USciences-TV, table tents, sidewalk chalk, etc. i. Assist with updating the departments website with video, photography, student and faculty profiles. Contributing to Event Planning Special Programs a. Coordinate once a semester Advocate/Protg off-campus event. b. Coordinate once a semester volunteer event. Role as an Advocate a. Assist student in transition to University of the Sciences and more specifically through career development. i. Utilize USciences resources. b. Aide Protgs exploration of academic, personal, and professional goals. c. Create and maintain a balanced working relationship based in trust and support. d. Refine communication skills respecting the importance of enhanced listening skills. e. Maintain a strong understanding of University policies and norms. i. Share this information with Protg. f. Refer Protg when needed for additional support.

Career Services Department Devils Advocates Learning Outcomes 2012-2013


Leadership Advocates will identify as being select students who are mature and capable of supporting others through career and academic exploration. Advocates will acknowledge and actively uphold their job responsibilities and ethical expectations of their position as a leader at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. Advocates will develop life skills by working with the University community to provide an enriching experience for Protgs. As a selected student leader, Advocates will learn through their training to be better communicators. In the Advocate role, students will enhance their time management by having successful outcomes in their responsibilities. Marketing Advocates will enhance the Career Services Department website to provide a layout and information which is more user friendly. Advocates will gain personal development by researching and presenting Minute Clinics on campus. Cognitive Knowledge Enhancement Advocates will learn to research the World of Work in order to assist Protgs through self-discovery. Advocates will research the economy and its effects professions in the sciences. Civic Engagement Advocates will cultivate organizational skills in order to meet regularly with Protgs. Advocates will plan semester volunteer experience at a local non-profit organization in order to have a positive experience with the community. Personal Competence Advocates will support the Career Services Department by attending a variety of workshops to assist with staffing the event while also learning about professional topics for personal gain. Through a mid-semester and end of the semester evaluation, Advocates will be provided an opportunity to reflect on their experience. Academic Achievement Advocates will utilize available campus resources to maintain and enhance their academic experience at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
