Issue 2 - Term 2 - Week 3 Dear Parents, This has been a very busy fortnight as illustrated in the events outlined in this newsletter. ANZAC Day Ceremony: Our school leaders capably led the K-6 assembly to commemorate the spirit of ANZAC. There were historical photographic tributes depicting the First World War and the landing at Gallipoli. Poems and songs about leaders, heroes and the hardship and futility of war were shared throughout the service. Our school captains laid a floral tribute under the flag. The service concluded with our National Anthem. Congratulations to Ms Rani Sandhu who coordinated this service and thank you to our guest Mr Turner for reading the poem. Cross Country Carnival:

What a fabulous day this was. Beautiful weather, great organisation by our Beaumont Hills team of teachers led by Mr Trollope, Mr Vincent and Mrs Penny Purcell and wonderful runners K-6 who competed to the best of their ability displaying outstanding sportsmanship, combined to result in a most enjoyable day. Congratulations to all students who achieved success that will allow them to represent our school at the upcoming Zone Carnival To all students who achieved their best result ever in this competition well done.

Bronze Award Assembly: Last Wednesday, Beaumont Hills students, staff and parents gathered to recognise the achievements of the recipients of Bronze Awards. Students were recognised at this assembly with this very prestigious award because of their exemplary behaviour and positive contributions made daily in their school life. Congratulations to all award winners and thank you to Mrs Kirsti Hitz Morton for her coordination of this event.

Student Leadership at Beaumont Hills: The staff at Beaumont Hills are regularly striving to create, recognise and enhance student leadership opportunities. Student leadership appears in many forms

within a school context. At the beginning level, this may be demonstrated when students are asked to provide assistance in the support of events and special days. However, true development of student leadership focuses on the ability of the individual student to collaboratively identify issues, plan action to address these issues and work as a member of a team. This ability to unite a team to create, to inspire others, resulting in meaningful change, gives students a strong sense of identity empowering them to be confident to make contributions to school life and to value the efforts of all. Only with the creation of varied leadership opportunities will our leaders of the future develop these skills. Throughout this year staff will be developing leadership skills through embracing current practices, while exploring new opportunities for our elected student leaders. Some of the current leadership opportunities are outlined below. This week our library monitors and elected members of the SRC (Student Representative Council), from Years 1- 6 were recognised at a special presentation assembly. Parents had the opportunity to share this special event with staff and students and to join other parents for morning tea. Thank you to Mr Adam Vincent and Ms Emma Laws for coordinating the morning. The SRC play a vital role in student life at the school. They discuss student issues raised by the wider student body, organise fundraising events and this year (the Year of Sustainability) they will be examining ways of how to create, not only a more sustainable learning environment, but ways in which to measure this whole school shift to a more sustainably efficient school.

A large number of Year 6 students will soon be asked to be involved in a Stage 3 social program where they will lead a series of group activities that foster cooperation, team building and resilience in the individual. Throughout the year there will hopefully be many more opportunities created to allow the development of our students capacity to solve problems, become critical thinkers and work cooperatively within a team to provide solutions associated with school issues raised. Mothers Day Stall: Senior students assisted in the logistic organisation of the Mothers Day stall where their input was invaluable. Thank you to Mrs McPhie for coordinating this opportunity for our students to purchase an affordable gift for their mums. Congratulations to: Kyron I, who was selected in both the regional Basketball and AFL teams. ( In action with Kalevarne F below).

Ruan J V R, who is a member of the UTF Black Belt School took part in the Lil Team Awesome Martial Arts Championship on Saturday, competing in 4 events and won a gold medal in the Battle Stix, and 2 silver medals in Pushido and Gladiators.

Currently some senior students peer tutor Stage One students through a reading program at various times throughout the week. The school buddy system fosters a framework for older students to mentor the younger ones through specifically designed social activities. Connor McP and Adam Di M were members of the CHPSSA team that won the boys Soccer at the Western Region carnival

Mufti Day: What a truly crazy hair day was experienced this Wednesday in support of Taylah P selection in the New South Wales Swimming team that will compete at the National Championships in Brisbane. Thank you, Beaumont Hills. You raised $570-00. I know that Taylah and her family will put this to good use.

Kindergarten Reading Workshop: The development of reading in the early years of a students life involves many different skills. This workshop is designed to develop a deeper understanding of the reading process and the skills involved in these early years. It will also provide practical ideas for parents to support that process. If you are free from 9.15am -10am on Tuesday 18th May please join our Early Stage One coordinator Mrs Kirsti Hitz-Morton for what will be a very informative and practical workshop. There is a separate note from Mrs Hitz-Morton providing more details of the session. Parent Helper Thank you: On Tuesday of this week, an enthusiastic team of apprentice book coverers supported our school by giving generously of their time to assist our librarian Ms Jane Flanagan, with the covering of new resources. Your time, good humour and support of our school is very much appreciated. NAPLAN UPDATE: There is a separate note outlining the organisation for next weeks test on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The tests will go ahead as originally planned.

Home School Partnership: As I stated in the first newsletter a school is made up of three mutually respected components- parents, teachers and students. I had the pleasure of meeting with members of the P&C executive last week. I encourage all parents to attend the next P&C meeting to be held at 7.30pm next Wednesday 12th May. There will be a normal meeting (anticipated to be brief) to allow for a relaxed conclusion to the evening with drinks and cheese. If you would like to be part of an organisation that will help provide invaluable support in student education in the 21st century then join your elected parent body next Wednesday evening. It is also vital in a home school partnership that concerns be acknowledged and discussed so that solutions can be negotiated. Beaumont Hills has an open door policy. If you, as a parent have a concern regarding any aspect of your childs class work please chat to your childs teacher. It is when collaboration occurs between home and school that effective action can be taken to ensure that the needs of all our students are met. Parents, teachers and students all work towards the same goal the development of happy, confident individuals who experience a classroom environment that supports optimum learning for all. Please see your childs teacher if you have any concerns.

Opportunity Class Placement Applications: A separate note has been distributed to all Year 4 parents outlining procedures and timelines involved in the application to sit the OC test in July. Heather Thomas Principal Walk Safely to School Day Friday 7th May This Friday, 7th May, has been nominated as Walk Safely to School Day, a promotion sponsored by the Pedestrian Council of Australia and the Department of Education. The idea is to encourage correct safely practices by children when walking, such as using a safe place to cross roads and waiting until a bus has gone before attempting to cross the road. On Friday, for those students who walk safely to school, the SRC will be handing out stickers to put on their bags, books or other suitable place. Tony Trollope Co ordinator Unclaimed bike: There has been a bike left in the bike rack for quite a while if your child is the owner, please ask them to take it home.

Alison Gribble Co ordinator Sport Report Following the publication of the outstanding sporting achievement of Taylah P-H, mentioned in the last newsletter, the news about the sporting ability of the students at Beaumont Hills continues to amaze: Kalevarne F and Iverson F were members of the CHPSSA Rugby League side that finished as joint champions of the Western Region carnival, playing an exciting draw with Mt Druitt PSSA. Connor McP and Adam Di M were members of the CHPSSA team that won the boys Soccer at the Western Region carnival, where they played 7 games, won 6, drew 1 and only had 1 goal scored against them in those 7 matches The senior girls swimming relay team, comprising Tara F, Taylah P-H, Madeline C and Tayla McD qualified for the State PSSA swimming championships for the 3rd year in a row.
