Employers criticized over york university Facebook password requests draws fire over $60 million deal
Victoria marroccoli Gazette staff The Canadian Association of University Teachers is claiming York Universitys academic integrity is compromised, following a generous donation from RIM co-founder Jim Balsillie through his think tank, the Centre for International Governance Innovation. A $60 million deal was signed to create a department for international law. In return for this donation, York will provide a campus for the Balsillie School of International Affairs and have power over where the money is spent. According to the Canadian Association of University Teachers, this means CIGI controls who is hired in the departments within the Balsillie school, what professors are teaching and where the money is spent in the school. James Turk, the executive director of the CAUT, actively spoke out against the acceptance of the funds. We are not concerned about the donation, but about the strings attached to the donation, Turk said. These institutions need to be insulated from the private or corporate influence of their supporters. Turk emphasized the importance of universities maintaining the freedom to pursue, research and hire whatever is most relevant and whoever is most qualified. Specifically about Yorks allowance of CIGI members on their steering committee for the Balsillie school, he said, No respectable university would accept this, but York did, and were horrified. CAUT has investigated issues like this in the past, particularly when CIGI signed a similar agreement with Wilfred Laurier University and the University of Waterloo. In response to this, Joanne Rider, chief media spokesperson at York, said, CIGI is bound by the findings of the scholarly panel [...] the universitys normal recruitment process governs the chairs. She stressed that the selection process for members of this committee would remain the same as other committee recruitment at the university. There are many other discrepancies between CIGI, CAUT and York. Fred Kuntz, the vice-presi-

Jesica Hurst arts & life editor For the past few years, employers have been using websites like Google and Facebook to check up on their candidates online presence, but now theyre taking it to a whole new level. A trend is on the rise in the employment industry where applicants are being asked mid-interview for their Facebook passwordssomething that could make or break the employers ultimate hiring decision. Most students looking for employment will do anything they can to get the job they want, but how far should they go when it comes to revealing their personal information? Susan Coyne, a career services consultant at Fanshawe, cautions students to think through their decision. Im honestly kind of shocked that employers would be asking for Facebook passwordsI think it is terribly inappropriate and is really pushing the limit, she said. As an applicant, I would wonder what they really want to know about me. Are they going to judge someone based on their marital status or hobbies? According to Coyne, employers may be looking for anything from unfavourable party photos to who the applicant is friends with. Bradley Marsh, a third-year English student at Western, recently had a potential employer ask him for his Facebook username and password during an interview.

susan coyne,

I said yesI have nothing to hide on there, so for me, it wasnt a big deal, he explained. I think they were just looking to verify the things I had already told them. For certain jobs, its important that [employers] are able to gather as much information about the candidate as possible. Even though Marsh didnt hesitate to hand over his information, he doesnt think that the information about him on Facebook should play a substantial role in the employers decision to hire him. I wouldnt want them basing their decision on Facebook alone, because I think even if you have nothing to hide and everything on

there is fine, its not a good representation of someones life, he said. For most jobs, I think your personal life can and should be separated from your work life. For the applicants who arent as keen on handing over their information, there is currently no legal protection in place in Ontario. However, John Craig, a law professor at Western, said some instances might spill over into a case of discrimination. If there is information on someones Facebook profile about their sexual orientation or religion or something like that, all of a sudden that is now a part of the interview process, Craig explained. I would suggest that not only has the employer potentially invaded the privacy of the job candidate, but now has personal information. If the candidate doesnt get the job, the employer may be exposed to a discrimination claim. According to Coyne, theres no right or wrong answer when it comes to deciding whether to supply login information, but suggested they should ask what the employers intent is. If someone asks a student for access to their Facebook page, perhaps they should say that it is for their friends, and their professional presentation and information can be found on LinkedIn, she said. If someone is really opposed to the idea, they should say no. The bottom line is, do you really want to work for someone who crosses the line?

dent of public affairs at CIGI, flatly denied that CIGI would be able to influence decision-making at York. He said of the $60 million dollars, the provincial government supports half, which was granted in 2009 to build a campus for the Balsillie School of International Affairs. Kuntz rejected the idea that this money is a donation to York. This is a funding program. Nobody is donating money to York here. CIGI has no veto over staffing and no veto over curriculum at the school, Kuntz said. He called CAUT an organization looking to unionize universities, and criticized their agenda. In response to this, Turk said CAUT had been following CIGIs motives with both Laurier and Waterloo, where there are also Balsillie campuses, since 2010. He referred to a document outlining that different projects within the Balsillie school need to be approved through consensus by a board made up of two members of CIGI, and two members each of the Laurier and Waterloo campuses. Turk referred to the agreement documents between CIGI and York as Orwellian, and provided documents where York agrees to only consider candidates on the steering committees short list. Mr. Balsillies private think tank should have no part in defining the areas in which York shall create chairs, Turk said. Even in the latest protocol, CIGI retains all veto power over many decisions. Editors note: Between CIGI and CAUT, there are many discrepancies in the details of the agreements. Both parties were able to produce documents contradicting the others claims.

dropping unemployment rate in London-St. thomas area

The unemployment rate of the London-St. Thomas area dropped from nine per cent to 8.8 per cent, according to Statistics Canada. However, the slight drop is caused by a shrinking workforce, instead of increasing employment. The figure indicates more and more people are giving up looking for work. The unemployment rate in London, along with many cities in Canada, reached its peak during the economic downturn of 2008, according to Statistics Canada. The unemployment rate before the economic downturn was 6.9 per cent. Currently, London has the second-highest unemployment rate among the major cities in Ontario, following Windsor at 10.7 per cent. The recent decrease of 0.2 per cent was deemed not statistically significant. There was a very small decline in the number of unemployed, and the net effect was a movement to some more individuals being not in the labour force

not employed and not looking for work, Jason Gilmore, senior analyst of Statistics Canada, stated in an email. From February 2011 to February 2012, overall employment among residents of London was essentially flat. Many factors affect the unemployment rate, including the debt crisis in Europe. While the rate remains mostly unchanged, measures are being taken to handle the situation, including provincial funding for development in southern Ontario. Anthony Poon

London.ca gets a facelift

London is in the process of receiving a digital facelift. City council is revamping its website, london.ca, to make it more accessible and user-friendly. We want to freshen it up and make it feel like its meeting the needs of our users, Elaine Gamble, city councils director of corporate communication, said. Not only does the city want to make their site more accessible, but they also want it to promote a positive image for the city in general. The main goal would be [] that it provides a really good image of London to both people who live here and [people who] are visiting, and also to to make sure its accessible on many different mobile platforms, Gamble explained. To determine how the new site should work, the city has been consulting members of the communityboth residents and people who conduct business in Londonwith internal staff groups and website surveys. With the project well under way, Gamble said the new site should be live by this fall. Nicole Gibillini

London eyes red-light traffic cameras

that, and we cant just have police on every corner, Harold Usher, Ward 12 councillor, explained. I think the public is all in for safety, and I think this is something that will help it be more safe. If I was to vote on it right at this minute, I would vote in favour of it, Usher concluded. Yet, Rader cautioned the city should be careful in the way they implement the cameras. Cities need to set up cameras in an effective way, in order to generate support from the public, Rader explained. They shouldnt be set up in a way that makes them look like a cash generator. They are a safety program.

Happy St. Patricks Day!

Jason Oncz Gazette

Cameron Smith Gazette staff Red-light traffic cameras may soon get the green light for implementation at London intersections. The city is reviewing its road safety plans, which includes the installation of red-light traffic cameras. Though rejected only a few years ago, the push for safe intersections may be a deciding factor in the decision to implement these cameras. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, red-light cameras have a profound positive impact on intersections. The safety benefits are clear

theyre an effective way to cut down on a common type of urban crash, Russ Rader, senior vice-president of communications for the IIHS, explained. Our mission is to find ways to reduce crashes. Red-light cameras are a proven, effective tool for making intersections safer. Many cities in the United States have already adopted the cameras, and their success is encouraging even more communities to adopt the use of them. The research shows that [intersections using] cameras lower redlight-running violations by 40 to 50 per cent and reduce injury crashes by 25 to 30 per cent, Rader said. There are about 556 communities

using them, and this is an increase from about 25 in 2000. According to research done by the IIHS, not only are general crashes reduced, but there is also a particularly noticeable drop in dangerous and even fatal crashes. We just completed a study last year looking at fatal crasheswe found the fatal red-light-running crashes fell by 24 per cent, compared with similar cities not using cameras, Rader said. However, despite these benefits, detractors of the project assert that drivers stopping quickly because of fear of being caught running the light will increase the number of rear-end collisions.

Some studies have shown an increase in rear-end crashes, and some have notbut if there is an increase in rear-end crashes, studies show its more than offset by the reduction in severe side impact crashes, Rader said. If rear-end crashes go up, it may prove that those cameras are working, because those people that stopped may have blown through the light, and thats what we want. The proposal may be appealing to city councillors looking to improve road safety. Based on what I have seen, people are running red lights and running through amber lights, and we have to have something to stop

oLG modernization report sparks fury of horse racers

taylor rodrigues Gazette staff The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation has presented a report to the Minister of Finance outlining ways to modernize the Ontario lottery and gaming system and create jobs. The report, Modernizing Lottery and Gaming In Ontario, made three major recommendations. It explained the OLG needs to become more customer-focused, expand private sector investment and re-evaluate its regulatory role. If the recommendations are implemented, OLG expects to contribute $1.3 billion more to the public purse by 2017, attract $3 billion in private investment and create 2,300 new jobs in Ontario. However, Sue Leslie, president of the Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association, is concerned about the changes and was skeptical that there would be a net increase in new jobs if the recommendations are implemented. She said she was alarmed the report is recommending an end to the slots-at-racetrack program in March 2013. Leslie explained under the current agreement, horse track slot machine revenues are split between horse tracks, municipalities and the province. She said the province receives 75 per cent, the municipalities where the slots are located receive five percent, and the horse tracks receive the remaining 20 percent. In return, the horse race tracks maintain the facilities the slot machines are housed in. Leslie predicted ending this program would be detrimental to the industry as a whole. It is going to decimate the horse racing industry, she said. According to Leslie, there are potentially 60,000 jobs on the line. She also questioned the feasibility of the private sector investment. Who in the private sector is going to build a building, a parking lot, assume all the risk and not get 20 per cent? Its just not going to happen, she argued. The OLG report stated the current system is no longer competitive. It reasoned, as long as slots facilities are linked to individual racetracks, OLG is unable to consider alternate locations for gaming sites. Over time, this has resulted in the location of gaming facilities in places unrelated to customer interest. Brian Tropea, general manager for the Ontario Harness Horse Racing Association, was also unhappy with the proposed changes. Im a little disappointed because the governments position should be to take [the OLG] recommendations and balance them against the social and economic impacts that those recommendations would have in Ontario, Tropea said. He argued the OLGs report only focused on ways to generate more revenue for the government, and noted there is a lot of ambiguity in the OLG report. They talk about ending the revenue sharing agreement, but they also talk about negotiating new arrangementskind of like on a landlord-tenant basis with racetrack operators, Tropea said. The OLG report did not specify which racetracks they would maintain their slots under a separate agreement. It stated it only had plans to keep those with sufficient customer interest. The reports less contentious recommendations include making an Ontario online gaming website by 2013, and expanding the locations where lottery tickets can legally be sold. It also suggested creating another casino in the greater Toronto area. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation were unavailable for comment.

Opinions
Passwords are private
Through social media sites like Facebook, we are enjoying the benefits of being constantly connected to everyone, and we no longer have to rely on high school reunions to discover what mundane things our former classmates have wasted their lives doing. But what would you say if a potential employer asked you for your Facebook password? Some companies are doing this to ensure their employees arent off engaging in unruly shenanigans, and to gauge their character better than they may be able to through a resum or interview. But is this ever necessary? While we may have nothing to hide on our Facebook profiles, this is still an invasion of privacylike asking for the key to our houses or the password to our emails. Such a request might be more understandable if it were for a government job or a position with a police force. An employers concern for how an employee portrays him or herself online is a legitimate concern especially if its a teaching job, or something in the law enforcement field. But theres a difference between requesting to see a profile page for general impressions and digging through personal messages to learn more about who someone is. You can gain information about someone through email, phone calls and text messages as wellmediums that may portray someone more accurately than a Facebook page. But where do you draw the line? Everyone is entitled to personal privacy, and since most people use social media, maybe there should be some kind of legislation in place to ensure personal rights. Not only can your social media accounts reveal basic personal information, it also puts people at risk for being judged based on religious, political or sexual orientations if that information is listed. People seem to be more aware of the risks associated with posting personal information online. Thus, caution should continue as more employers are catching on to the benefits of accessing someones social media accounts. Its understandable for employers to want to gauge their employees as accurately as they can, and searching through public posts is totally fine with us. But if people choose to keep a Facebook profile, but dont want to share everything they do online with absolutely everyone, they should have a right to privacy. The Gazette Editorial Board

theyre fans of promoting the attitude of working hard and not handing things over on a silver platter. Okay fine, parentsI see what youre doing. Instilling a strong work ethic will probably come in handy. In fact, it probably already has. But after a continuous stream of unemployment, my mind starts to meander into fantasies of having a dream job lined up solely because I was the heir to a powerful person in one of my preferred career paths. But these fantasies are short-lived. Realistically, there is no satisfaction in nepotismyour only qualification is your last name, and who really wants that? Youre forever known around the office as the bosss kid. Everyone walks on eggshells around you, and to top it off, your mom or dad is your boss. Do you know what that means? Well, for me, it would mean a constant stream of nagging which flows from home to work and then back home again. And moving out becomes a mere formality, because with mom or dad at work, youre never really on your own. Sure, when we hear a friendlets call them privileged friend Atalk about how his or her upper-level management job, wrapped up in a starting salary of $60,000 with a big, bright nepotism bow on top is awaiting them after graduation, we might feel the slight pangs of jealously. Understandable. Privileged friend A scoots into employment while the rest of us are forced to trudge through the trenches of entrylevel job applications and unpaid internships, all while dealing with the anguish of constant rejection. But the constant agony of disappointment makes the long-awaited approval so much sweeter. Knowing you were given a job not because of the last name at the top of the resum, but because of all the qualifications underneath, is far more satisfying.

Kaitlyn mcGrath opinions editor I was going to write about St. Patricks Day, because with a last name like mine, I really should write about the day that celebrates all the desirableand some not so desirablestereotypes of my heritage. But why would I put you to sleep with a chronological history of how this McGrath clan came to Canada, when I could discuss a far more enticing even controversialaspect of heritage. Thats right, this is the roundabout way Im choosing to introduce the topic of nepotism. Nepotism is defined as favouritism bestowed on relatives regardless of their merit in business or politics. But the term can cover all aspects of the work world. The unethical side of nepotism is apparent. Its unfair and becomes a contentious issue when a family member, perhaps an unqualified family member, is granted a job based solely on being family. It becomes even more of an issue when said relative is given a job over qualified candidates. But as always, there are two sides to the nepotism coin. If someone in your family has a great job and not much moral integrity, nepotism can be a great thing. But for those who have relatives who wont breach the integrity of their company or place of work, well, nepotism doesnt really do much for you. I belong to the second group, which frankly, isnt a tragedy. Firstly, neither of my parents have jobs Im remotely interested inteaching or accounting? Thanks, but no thanks. Secondly,

other side to Kony

Re: Kony 2012 (March 8, 2012) To the Editor: In regards to the Gazette editorial board, I can say something I never thought I would say: I agree with the Gazette. Ill admit I havent watched the 30-minute video yet. However, I do have a justified reason. Simply put, I actually knew of the existence of Joseph Kony and the LRA before last Monday. The support this video has received is just another symbol of how unaware most Westerners are about world events. Furthermore, while Kony 2012 may appear to be a noble cause, an attempt to arrest and indict a war criminal

wanted by the International Criminal Court sets a precedent that war criminals should only be brought to justice when public opinion demands it. Joseph Kony is a criminal, yes, but he is no different than Omar Bashir of Sudan, Bashar al-Assad of Syria, and Islam Karimov of Uzbekistan, who is notorious for boiling his political opponents alive. In short, this event has simply proven we need to be more aware of world events so that our opinions are not easily swayed in one direction. As some have pointed out, the Ugandan military has been accused of war crimes, and the current president Yoweri Museveni is also a dictator. feras obeid

a healthy dose of theatre Goodness

Laura trabucco Gazette staff Londons burgeoning local theatre scene just keeps getting better, thanks mostly to the passion and dedication of former Western students. Shannon Charnock, Western alumnus, talks about her production company SEEs latest effort, the staging of Michael Redhills Goodness. What previous experience do you have working with theatre? In my undergrad at Western, I was involved in over 10 productions as an actor, stage manager, make-up artist, etc. The more theatre I did, the more I discovered that I had my own ideas about what would look good on stage and would occasionally make suggestions to the directors. When those ideas went over well, I kind of figured that I would try my hand at acting and see if I enjoy it. How did you decide on this particular play? I studied this play a few years ago in a drama class at Western. Its actually being studied this term in the Canadian drama course. I fell in love with it. Its so thought-provoking. The language is beautiful and its brilliantly written. The playwright has a knack for writing really natural sounding dialogue and he balances humour and drama. What has been your favourite part of working on this project thus far? What has been the biggest challenge? My favourite part has been seeing it come alive in front of me at rehearsals. Seeing the actors develop into these characters has been remarkable. For example, the lead, Stephen Trim, had no previous acting experience, and seeing how much stronger he has become as an actor is really great. Everyone in this show has grown so much. The biggest challenge has been the production management side of the show. Im very comfortable with the artistic side, but in terms of producing a show on my own, that has been the toughest thing. I had a few different producers lined up to help, but those all fell through for various reasons and I ended up funding it entirely by myself. Were there any unforeseen issues that you encountered when putting this project together? There were many. I mentioned the producers backing outthat caused delays. Casting was a bit of an issue. I didnt want to cast just anyone, I wanted to get the right people together. One of the actors dropped out a couple of weeks into the production and we needed to re-cast the role. It all took a while, but I finally found the right people for the roles and Im so happy with them. They are a tremendously talented and dedicated group. Is this the first project for SEE Productions? What do you hope to accomplish in the future? Yes. Im hoping to see it grow into something permanent in London. London has a good theatre scene, but I find most of the shows on the lighter side of the spectrum. The really challenging stuff doesnt get put on very often. So thats where I hope SEE Productions will find its niche. Id like to produce those kinds of plays with an emphasis on Canadian drama, too. Watch SEE productions debut performance from March 14-17 at The Arts Project. Tickets are $15 and $12 for students.

Sports
Jason Sinukoff sports editor It was no less than two weeks ago when both the mens and womens track and field teams won silver at the Ontario University Athletics championship. But like any true competitors, they were hungry for more. Enter the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships. The Mustangs travelled to Manitoba this past weekend to compete with the best schools across the nation for school pride and the right to be called national champions. The men captured the coveted gold while the women had an impressive outing themselves, taking home the bronze. My expectations are always for athletes to have their best meet of the year at CIS, and we, the coaching staff, tries to prepare them to do so, Vickie Croley, Mustangs head coach, said. But [the men] stepped up to a new level of competition and ultimately combined to give us a team title. Heading into the last day of competition, the men were stuck in fifth place. However, this all changed when everyone was able to step it up and bring the team to uncharted territory. Id say at the end of the competition on Friday night with the 4x800m, was just an incredible run for all four of those athletes. Huge races and personal bests for all four of them, and the fact that they set a school record and ended Friday night on such a high note [] was really exciting and just got our team pumped, Croley explained. Another motivational performance was that of Andrew Welch in the shot put, who, despite competing with an injury, took home the silver medal. Welch had such a big throw. He was certainly a big question mark, because he was injured and we werent sure if he would compete. He was in a lot of pain, but it was just one of those mind over matter things, and he threw almost a metre over his personal best, Croley said. When athletes do that in competition in front of their competitors, it throws their competitors off. So that was another one of those incredible moments on day three. Despite the win, Mustangs star Scott Leitch and coach Croley knew the road to the Promised Land would be a tough one. We knew going into the weekend that we had a shot at the team title, but it was going to be tough. A ton of athletes really stepped up to the challenge, especially on the third day, Leitch, Mustangs gold medalist, said. Everyone pulled more than their weight to help make this championship truly a win for the entire team, and not just a few select athletes. We really showed how track and field can become a team sport. I think going in, I knew that our mens team did have a shot at winning. It was a long shot, and it was dependant on things like our athletes performing kind of out of their skin, and they did that, Croley continued. There was no shortness of medals on the womens side either, as Alicia Smith and Caroline Ehrhardt dazzled in the long jump and triple jump to help the Mustangs finish in third place with 60 points. Certainly on the womens side, our two strongest female jumpersAlicia Smith, who won the gold in long jump, had an outstanding competition, and Caroline Ehrhardt, who was the silver medalist behind Alicia in the long jump and the gold medalist in the triple jump, Croley said. To top off the amazing outing in Winnipeg, Croley was named the CIS mens coach of the year. But she was sure to note that without her staff, this achievement would not have been possible. I may be the head of the athletes and the staff, but it is really the assistant coaches that do the hands on coaching with any of our athletes, so this certainly is a shared award.

saywhat?
i think weve done a lot of different things to speed up the game. i think maybe looking at putting [the red line] back in in some way, shape or form would help moderate the speed so to speak.

>> Boston Bruins general manager peter chiarelli on the reimplementation of the red line.

rundown >> after taking silver at the ontario university athletics championship, the Mustangs womens curling team is headed to Welland, ontario for this weekends canadian interuniversity sport championship > the team, led by skip caitlin romain, will be looking to avenge their february loss to laurier and bring a championship to Western.

Late run powers podium finishes for both teams

South: the Kentucky Wildcats have been the best team in the ncaa all season. With players like anthony davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, it is hard to think that anybody else in this region can stop the Wildcats. West: the Marquette Golden eagles will avenge their loss to louisville from the Big east tournament quarterfinals when they take down the cardinals in the elite eight. Behind superstars darius Johnson-odom and Jae crowder, the Golden eagles will have a surprisingly easy time getting to the final four. Midwest: despite losing most of their scoring from last years team, the Kansas Jayhawks rolled to a 26-5 record to once again capture their regular season conference title. With superstar big-man thomas robinson leading the charge, nobody should count out the Jayhawks. East: the syracuse orange have only lost once during the regular season. enough said. the orange have far and away been one of the best teams in the ncaa this year, and they will show why when they take down ohio st. to advance to the final four.

South: though this bracket is considered the most deadly, with potent teams like Baylor and duke, those teams have their flawsKentucky does not. far and away the best team in the nation, Kentuckys only flaw is inexperience. But with the best player in the nation wearing a Wildcat uniform, coach calipari will finally get over the hump. West: Michigan state has the experience and the coaching acumen, but the tournament isnt called March Madness for nothing. Missouri is a fast and deep team that should make a long run in this years tournament. Midwest: this pick is very reliant on the hand of John henson, but with him in the lineup, the tarheels are a dangerous team. also watch for san diego state to make a run. East: the seminoles are a dangerous team when hothaving beaten unc and dukebut they are susceptible when they are cold. Kemba Walker and the huskies showed what a hot team could do in the tournament last year, so look for the seminoles to ride the wave of momentum.

Griffin not priced to sell

the tables have sterned
ryan Stern sports editor Manning or Leaf, high floor versus high ceiling, reliable versus erratic. Peyton Manning is one of the best quarterbacks to strap on cleats and is a sure-fire first ballot hall of famer. Coming out of Tennessee as the Heisman Trophy runner-up, Manning was one of the best quarterback prospects to arrive in the NFL since John Elway. Then there was Ryan Leaf. If he was in college now, he would undoubtedly be labelled The Most Interesting Man in the Worlda man with as much zip in his quotes as he had on his passes. Fast-forward from 1998 to 2012 and we see a similar battle atop the draft charts. Luck is viewed as a sure bet, and Baylor Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III is the more interestingyet less conventionalpasser. No, this isnt a direct comparison between Luck-Manning and Griffin-Leaf. For one, if you have ever watched an interview with Griffin you would know that he is clearly much better equipped than Leaf to lead an NFL franchise. I also dont have trouble with Luck and Griffin being drafted with the first two picks of this years NFL draftbut did the Washington Redskins give up too much for the opportunity to draft Griffin given the risk displayed by Leafs bust? In order to move up to the second overall pick from the eighth overall pick, the Redskins swapped 2012 first round picks, surrendered their 2012 second round pick and their first round picks in 2013 and 2014. Assuming the Redskins only marginally improve each year under the tutelage of Griffin as a rookie, the picks in 2013 and 2014 should end up between the 12th to 17th overall range. Those picks are safe assumptionsand are obviously just rough estimates because anything can happen on Sunday but for arguments sake, they seem appropriate. Using last years draft as a point of reference, over the next three years, the Rams will net players of the calibre of Tyron Smith, Nick Fairley, Mike Pouncey and Akeem Ayers. For those keeping track, that is a rebuilt offensive line, a dominant defensive tackle and a serviceable starting linebacker. I have no doubt Griffin will be an outstanding quarterback at the next level, but I dont think that the difference between Griffin and the next best quarterback, Ryan Tannehill, is a rebuilt offensive line, a dominant defensive lineman and a starting linebacker. That all being said, is anyone in the NFL really surprised that this move was pulled off, considering Dan Snyder was at the helm? You shouldnt be.
