CONJUNCTIONS: A conjunction is a part of speech that functions as a connector or to join two sentences, clauses, phrases or words.

It is an integral part of the English language. It helps to create better sentences. However, using them incorrectly or not using them at all results in choppy and incoherent writing. There are three grammatical forms of conjunctions that perform three grammatical functions. The three forms of conjunctions are: Coordinating conjunctions Correlative conjunctions Subordinating conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions are also known as words that link or join parts of a sentence that is grammatically equal or similar. Here, coordinating conjunctions shows that the elements it joins are similar in importance and structure. For example:
She was fascinated by his exquisite style and impressed by his intelligence. They spent hours talking over the phone and this opened her to a broader and richer

world. In these sentences, each of the clauses is independent, which means that they can stand on their own and make sense all by themselves. Here no one clause is more dominant over or subservient to another, but they are both of equal value and weight as they are both independent and not dependent. Coordinating conjunctions always come between the words or clauses that they join. A comma is always use before the conjunction when a coordinating conjunction joins independent clauses. However, it is not really essential when the independent clauses are short and well- balanced. There are 7 coordinating conjunctions which are known in initials as FANBOYS. It stands for : For. And .Nor .But. Or .Yet. So. The second grammatical form of conjunctions is the correlative conjunctions. It is a pair of conjunctions that are joined together to combine two relative parts of speech. There are no example found in the passage but other examples that correlative conjunctions are being used are:

Ahmad was not only mean, but also rude. The show was neither fun nor exciting.

Siti was not sure whether she was winning or losing.

It is often function as comparative devices. However, this is not their sole function but it is the most common context in which we can see. The following are the correlative conjunctions: Not only......but.... Neither.....nor.... Whether.....or. and etc. The third grammatical form of conjunctions is the subordinating conjunctions. Subordinating conjunctions are used to join a subordinate (dependent) clause to a main clause (independent). Common subordinating conjunctions are: after, although, as, because, before, how, if, once, since, than, that, though, till, until, when, where, whether, while. Here are some examples from the passage that used the subordinating conjunctions.

Even her family had been thrilled when he proposed. (Subordinate) (Independent) Whatever social ulterior motives he may had, there was something about him that (Subordinate) made him hard to resist. (Independent clause) When they first met, she was leading an isolated dull life. (Subordinate) (Independent clause) A subordinate or dependent clause depends on a main or independent clause. It

cannot exist alone. As in the example above: Even her family had been thrilled. It will lead to a question mark when we read it but a main or independent clause can stand alone and we can understand it very well. For example: When he proposed. In terms of this passage, the majority of conjunctions that are being used came from the subordinating conjunctions. Most of the clauses link with each other and depend on the main clauses. There were no correlative conjunctions found in the passage. However, in this example: In real fact, he was the most ruthless person and not a warm person in any aspect of his life although he had been affectionate to her at first. There are two different types of conjunctions being used: coordinating and also subordinating conjunctions. Here the first two clauses can stand by it self but the last clause depends on the previous two clauses. As a conclusion, conjunction may breathe creative life and persuasive writing by combining ideas and compare clauses without having to break up the sentences into choppy fragments. However, it also can cause problems if not used properly. By using conjunctions, it

leads to a better understanding of the passage and it also attracts the readers attention while reading the text.
