I.

Objectives: With the use of varied activities, the students are expected to: a. Evaluate the different characters of the story Hunchback of Notre Dame regarding their beliefs and behaviors; b. Express appreciation for human nature presented in the story; and c. Point-out how challenges, love and sacrifice are necessary conditions for growth and development. Subject Matter: Topic: The Hunchback of Notre Dame Reference: English Magazine: All the World A Stage Materials: pictures, PowerPoint presentation, video clips and pieces of paper Skill Focus: Express opinions firmly and ideas with conviction. Procedure: A. Stimulating Activity The teacher will start the class by sharing to the class that Filipinos are stereotypes, according to the survey being conducted by the Department of Foreign Affairs 2009. Then the teacher will ask the following questions: 1.a Is it true that Filipinos are stereotypes? 2.a As a Filipino, what is your reaction to this statement which is quite contrary to our culture? The teacher will then choose one female student to sit on the hot chair to test whether the survey is true or not by showing the PowerPoint presentation. Note: The PowerPoint presentation shows pictures of men in different races, then the teacher will ask that if the man in the picture will propose to you will you say Yes or No. B. Actual Activity After the activity, the teacher will then lead the students to judging people by their physical appearance which is called STEREOTYPING. Teacher: You might wonder why we are talking about stereotyping and racial discrimination though we are not in Social Science class. It is because today we

will know the story of a man being judged as a monster because of his physique and the sacrifice that he is willing to give just for love. The teacher will show to the class a video clip about the story Hunchback of Notre Dame. But before that the teacher will introduce first the author and a short background about Notre Dame. Author: Victor - Marie Hugo **Born on February 26, 1802 and died on May 22, 1885. **was a French poet, playwright, novelist, essayist, visual artist, statesman, human rights activist and exponent of the Romantic Movement in France. Background: Notre Dame de Paris **Also known as Notre Dame Cathedral, is a Gothic, Catholic cathedral on the eastern half of the city in the fourth arrondissement of Paris, France. It is the cathedral of the Catholic Archdiocese of Paris. It is now time to show the video clip of the story Hunchback of Notre Dame. After the video clip, the teacher will ask the following questions: 1.b Who are the characters in the story? 2.b What is the setting of the story? 3.b Who is the antagonist in the story? 4.b is the reason of Claude Frollo in killing the gypsy mother and Quasimodo justifiable? Why? 5.b If you were the Archdeacon, would you believe him? 6.b If you were to put in the shoes of Quasimodo, who is deaf and has a giant humpback, would you forgive Claude Frollo in killing your mother in exchange of bringing you up? 7.b What can you say about Quasimodo, Claude Frollo and La Esmeralda? 8.b If you were to choose one character in the story to represent yourself, who would it be? Why? C. Follow-up Activity The teacher will facilitate a debate for the follow-up activity. The teacher will divide the house but in a more unconventional way. The teacher will present a PowerPoint slide which looks like this: Physical LOVE Appearance

Then the teacher will let the students choose between the two. In which they have to choose which is their standard/ requirement in a relationship whether its love

or physical appearance. If the students have already chosen on which side they prefer, then thats the side that they have to defend or justify. After the division of the house, the teacher will show different pictures that indicate: **Why we need love in a relationship? **Why we need our partners to be good looking? Then the teacher will ask the following questions: 1.c Which of these sides will make a relationship longer? Then the teacher will let the debate start in which they want to say something they will raise their flag. IV. Evaluation: In your test notebook, answer the following items briefly. (3 pts.) 1. Who is the author of the novel Hunchback of Notre Dame? Give a brief background. (3 pts) 2. Who are the main characters of the story? Choose 2 characters and describe each briefly. (2 pts) 3. If you were Quasimodo would you thank or hate Claude Frollo? Assignment: In your assignment notebook, write your experience of sacrificing just for your love. Whether romantic or parental love and what you have learned based on that experience.
