Papua New Guinea University of Technology Department of Mathematics and Computer Science MA235 Engineering Mathematics (II) A Semester

r 1 -2012 Contact hours per week: 4 Course coordinator & Lecturer: Mr J.Lanta Tutors: Dr A. Moshi, Dr Singh, Mr Angoppa Pre-requisites: Must satisfactorily complete MA167 & MA168. Objectives: On completion of this subject students should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Integrate using a variety of techniques including partial fractions and reduction formulae. Calculate surface areas of solid of revolutions. Calculate length of curves. Formulate and solve various first order differential equations. Use Laplace and inverse Laplace Transforms to solve O.D.Es. Use numerical techniques to solve equations, calculate definite integrals, and solve differential equations. Office: MCS 207 Ph: 4734801 (main office)

Syllabus: Integration: Further techniques of integration; including partial fractions, reduction formulae, trigonometric substitutions, and integrals of inverse functions. Applications; including surface areas of solids of revolution and length of curves. First order Differential Equations: Formation, Solutions techniques; including separable variables, homogeneous, and integrating factors. Applications. Laplace transforms: Transform of standard functions, properties of transforms, inverse transforms. Numerical Methods: Solution of equations (bisection, Newton-Raphson), numerical methods of integration (trapezoidal and Simpsons Rule), numerical solutions of differential equations (RungeKutta technique). Textbook: References: Anton,H.,Calculus with Analytical Geometry, 6th ed (Wiley, 1999). Kreyszig E., Advanced Engineering Mathematics, 7th Edition (Wiley, 1993). Stroud K.A., Engineering Mathematics: Programmes and Problems, 4th Edition (ELBS/Macmillan, 1995). Equipment: Scientific calculator.

Assessment: Two types. 1. Continuous assessment 50%, (3 tests 30%, 3 assignments 10%)

There will be 3 one hour tests and 3 assignments. Students will take a week to complete each assignment and submit to tutors for marking. All tests are equally weighted, so as assignments. Extensions of the due date for submission will NOT be granted. Where there are exceptional circumstances (pressure of work, or poor time management are not exceptional circumstances), an extension may be granted after submitting a formal written request to the lecturer along with supporting documents (doctors certificate, for example). Applications for extension MUST be submitted to the lecturer no later than one working day before the due date of the particular assessment item. The same apply to tests. If the lecturer grants an extension this will be communicated to the student in writing specifying explicitly the extension date. If the student subsequently submits the assessment item within the extended date no penalty will apply. For tests a specific date will be set at the convenience of the lecturer. Late submission penalty The penalty for late submission of assessment items where students have not been granted an extension is as follows. Student who fail to notify the Course Coordinator by email by the set date required for notification of a request for an extension of time (a day before the due date of assessment submission) will be liable to a penalty of 10% of the total marks available for each of the FIRST five working days late, after which a zero mark will be given.

2. Written Examination 50% (1 x 3 hrs).
