"Chappell goes mental with de Bono Sixer" Article in Times Of India, Times Sports dated:13th July'05 Page:25 Written by: Madhu Jawaki/TNN Bangalore: The workouts are over. It's time for the high profile Indian coach Greg Chappell to put his wards through some mental exercises. This time is isn't psychologist Sandy Gordon's persuasive technique of inducing self-belief and competitiveness. On Wednesday, Chappell plans to introduce Team India to Six thinking Hats, a method developed by Edward De Bono. Guru of Lateral Thinking. The Audio-visual presentation of Bono's theory talks of a method aimed at simplifying things and, purportedly, helps people think better. It also boasts of a `practical' and `uniquely positive' approach to making decisions and exploring new ideas. "Your success I business depends on how well you think," says de bono, considered the foremost authority in conceptual thinking and on teachings of thinking. "We are looking to explore the de Bono method to expand our thinking to improve planning and communication," said Chappell, when asked about the purpose. According to de Bono, people have difficulty in thinking because they try to do too much at once. This programme breaks down the thinking process into series of simple "one-at-a-time" action that separates yet acknowledges emotion, negativity, objectivity, creativity and control. The course helps people to think differently about any subject, giving them skills to consistently deliver creative solutions and outcomes. As an example de Bono says juggling with six balls at the same time is rather difficult. "But tossing up one ball at a time is easier. Likewise with the Six Hats method, you try to do only one thing at a time. There is a time when we look for danger(Black hat). "There is time when we seek new ideas(green hat). There is a time when we focus on information(White Hat).We do not try to do everything at the same time." Chappell's boys, who have been sweating it out for close to a fortnight at the conditioning camp here, might have a lesson or two there. Players responding well to new methods: Chappell

Indian cricket team coach Greg Chappell says the players are responding positively to the new mind game methods introduced at the training camp here. "They've been very open-minded and willing to listen and experience the new methods introduced by various experts," Chappell told. Chappell, known and respected widely as an authority on the mental aspects of the game, has introduced new and innovative thinking methods to the 36 probables during the past week at the training camp. "I'm very happy with the players' readiness (to accept what I have to offer). That's all I can ask for," he said. Shiva Subramaniam, a human resource consultant with Tata Consultancy Services, introduced the probables to creative and lateral thinking methods. Chappell had also brought in Charles Krebs, a kinesiologist - a specialist in the mechanics of body movement - to monitor the musclemovement of the fast bowlers.

"The specialist also analysed the fast bowlers' muscle breakdown as well as ways to prevent injury," Chappell said. Among his invitees is sports scientist Ian Frazer, who will be part of the team's support staff for the upcoming Sri Lankan tour, to share his expertise in the areas of sports analysis, science and biomechanics. "Everyone will take it in different ways, that's why there's a whole range of things that I want to introduce to the players as some may respond to one stimulation, and others to another," Chappell said. "So our challenge is to find the right stimulation for the players to bring the best out of them," he added. Chappell expressed happiness over the progress of the camp despite some players arriving late from their English county commitments.
