Job satisfaction and attitude of employees.

WHAT IS ATTITUDE AND JOB SATISFACTION First we need to define what employee satisfaction and attitude is; an attitude is a favorable or unfavorable reaction toward something. Attitudes are generally positive or negative views of a person, place, thing, or even this is often referred to as the attitude object. People can also be conflicted or ambivalent toward an object, meaning that they simultaneously possess both positive and negative attitudes toward the item in question. Looking it by HR perspective an attitude would be the positive or the negative views of an employee about his organization. Attitude is made up of three componentscognition, affect, and behavior. Individuals have many kinds of attitudes about their jobs; of the main job attitudes, organizational commitment and job satisfaction are the most widely studied.

Job satisfaction describes how content an individual is with his /her job. The happier people are within their job, the more satisfied they are said to be. Job satisfaction is not the same as motivation or aptitude, although it is clearly linked. Influences on satisfaction include the management style and culture, employee involvement, empowerment and autonomous work position. Job satisfaction is a very important attribute which is frequently measured by organizations. The most common way of measurement is the use of rating scales where employees report their reactions to their jobs. Questions relate to rate of pay, work responsibilities, variety of tasks, promotional opportunities, the work itself and co-workers. While there are many methods for measuring job satisfaction these varying from organization to organization. Each organization adopts a method it thinks is more suitable with their line of work or organizational structure. A pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from the appraisal of ones job or job experiences The most-used research definition of job satisfaction is by Locke (1976).

Our assignment is based on the following: how do you measure job satisfaction and attitude of

employees towards the organization with special reference to the Pearl continental hotel Lahore
(PCHL).

Pearl continental hotel is an icon in the hotel industry of Pakistan, serving millions of people yearly it is stretched out in all major cities of Pakistan and present in exotic localities like bhurban and gawadar. PCHL has roughly about 1500 employees divided in different department and management level; executive level, directors level, managers level, and staff level.

To inquire about levels of job satisfaction and attitudes of the employee in PCHL we contacted Mr.Shahzad Rafique, Director Human resource PCHL.

According to him the major component of job satisfaction in PCHL is (1) Pay Scale (2) Status while attitude of employees at PCHL varies from persons to persons but generally all satisfied employees have a positive attitude towards their organization. All the employees at PCHL are employed after a standard HR process of inducting i.e. various tests and interviews and are given sufficient training depending on their job description and previous affiliation.

-Measuring job satisfaction at PCHL There is master file kept of all the employees working at PCHL having all the information about the person, education, experience, discipline, achievements, attendance. This helps the HR department to keep an eye on how the employee is performing. Further the organization measures it employees job satisfaction through, -weekly surveys -monthly surveys -yearly surveys

Weekly surveys are mostly based on the attendance of the employees. Monthly surveys mostly depict the performance of the employee. Yearly survey helps the organization understand employees loyalty and their capability to climb the ladder in the organizational structure. These surveys are conducting in collaboration of the HR department with all the supervisors and their immediate boss.

To achieve a positive attitude and a high level of job satisfaction PCHL provides the following employee benefits plan. -Life Insurance It offers eligible permanent employees term life insurance, including an accidental.Premiums for these employees are paid entirely by PCHL. -Health Insurance This program provides inpatient hospitalization to the permanent emplyess and their families. -Medical reimbursement This provides up to one gross salary for medical reimbursement for self and family. -Employee cafeteria and lockers -On job breaks -Provident Fund Membership -Employee old age benefits -Achievements awards on monthly and yearly basis -Corporate training and retreat -Cross Exposure

Further to keep the employees engaged in the organization PCHL conducts different sports and cultural events where all the departments compete and it provides a ground for good group working and relations.

The loyalty that the employees have with PCHL shows us that organization looking well after the employees and hence yielding greater job satisfaction. A major motivator to have a positive attitude with PCHL is that the current General Manager of the hotel started off as a captain and the finance executive joined in as a trainee. This shows that the organization invests a lot on its employee and there is a good opportunity for the employees to groom themselves professionally and climb up the ladder.
Businesses often forget about their employees, and ultimately, they suffer for it because you can't deliver good service from unhappy employees. Tony Hsieh
